Should "gold" be given to an 8 year old boy? Well in this case, yes, because it is just a gold colored stone of an unknown type. I always called these fools gold. Looks like some type of quartz but I am no rockologist. Well geologist, but, rockologist sounds way cool. Anyhow he loves rocks, has a rock tumbler and will love this shiny piece of "gold". Have you any idea what this is called precisely? Have you any real gold pieces, not jewelery? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hehehe...too bad it isn't real gold or your grandson would be quite rich...LOL...The technical term for fool's gold is Pyrite--I have a chunk of it..somewhere around here that I got a long time ago, along with my other "rocks" that I collect..uh, to match the rocks in my head perhaps?

I don't think he'd be getting it if it was real. Now after giving it to him, if it turns out to be real gold (NOT) then it's his. Perhaps. That's the rattling sound I heard? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It most likely is pyrite. Beautiful gold color but it stays on the surface of sand in water unlike real gold that sinks to the bottom. I gave a large chunk about the size of a quarter to my oldest daughter when she was eight and she still treasures that pretty stone. So yes it was good of you to give it to your grandson. He will treasure it.

Well fool's gold is also known as iron sulphide (I remember from watching "Silence of the Lambs"!), but I couldn't tell from the picture if that's specifically what it is. I'm no rockologist either!

nope not iron suphide its fool gold and is called iron pyrites and this is straight from the Lead 'south dakota gold mine's rock book. We have several gold mines in South' dakota and people were always bringing in fools gold and wanting to know how much so they even put a book 'out, really just a pamphlet and told the name of fools'gold and what real gold looked like in the raw.

Sorry I can not be of any help with telling you what type of rock that is but it is very unusual and pretty. I would also like to see the after picture after your grandson puts it through the rock tumbler. Gold pieces, hmmm, does a gold filling count? I also like your term, rockologist. By the way, it looks like someone took a bite out of that rock.

Yeah a filling counts as a piece of gold and not jewelry I guess. A customer left this on the table along with a tip for my wife the other night. pretty cool looking. Tyler will love this one I think. yeah, I got kind of hungry is all. Sorry. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yup, I think pyrite is the word for it--& have to agree with you grandpa bob that "rockologist" definitely rocks ;)! And sounds like your grandson will be loving that rock... Sad to say I have yet to find real gold, but I do remember myself as a kid trying to hunt for shiny stuff in the crevices of our floorboard! Just had this thought that some sort of treasure might be buried underneath them wooden planks...lol all I got though was just dust Anyhow, your post reminded me of this news article that I saw the other day about this guy whose grandpop gave him a metal mug when he was a kid--turns out, it was an ancient gold Persian relic!! around $988,000 worth! Have you heard of this story?? Check it out at http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080528/od_afp/lifestylebritainauctionhistory_080528122922 hmm, then again maybe you just might find something priceless for your grandson in the future! ;)

Pyrite is commonly known as Fool's gold because it resembles gold very good. Your specimen might be a combination of pyrite (iron sulphide - FeS2) and chalcopyrite (copper and iron sulphide - CuFeS2) which is somewhat yellow-greenish, slightly different than pyrite's clear golden color. I can't tell from this picture, but if,at a closer look, or even under a magnifying glass, you can see cubic (ore cube edges) crystals, that's what you've got: pyrite or a combination of pyrite and chalcopyrite.

Hey Bob, we do have a perfect rock that fits a fools gold description. My middle Son came running in one afternoon while we were on vacation in Arkansas, he ran in gold gold gold.... My uncle Raymond took that rock and bit it and said son you are rich beyond your wildest dreams.... My Son so excited said yes I know..... Uncle Raymond said you have pyrite. to this day it holds a special place in the great rocks of our home LMAO.

that could by pyrite-that's known as fools gold. the pyrite i saw all over the ground in arizona, kind of had a slight flake quality to it-sort of like mica, but stronger.

yep Grandpa Bob its fools gold or iron pyrites . I have'a goodly collection of pieces of it all nice and shiny along with a bunch of other rocks, like pink quartz, amethyst, and agates and devils tears and some obsidian. i love to' rock collect and even have some geodes I bought at our orange'county fair. I would love to get a rock tumble, that'would be such fun for me. the geodes werecut open and have pretty'crystal formations inside of them.I had some pieces'of 'Black Hills gold and like a real idiot I sold them. they were so pretty as they used several different shadesof gold in them including a rosy gold.I was a newly wed then and did not realize how much they were really worth.now the 'same pieces are really quite expensive and i had sold them for peanuts. too bad we don't acquire better brains when we are young and in love!

I sure do have a few gold coins. I just had them appraised last month and the guy wanted to give me quite a sum for them w/o telling me the appraisal. lol Finally got it out of him what they are worth and I fell to the floor in shock. 10 gold coins worth...ready for this, Grandpa Bob?...a cool 8 grand, rounded up slightly.

Actually, Bob, it could be real gold because gold is found with quartz. Fools gold is often found in cubic crystals.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! I really think at first glance, it was a gold nugget! haha..So if it is a fool's gold then I was fooled. haha..Sorry I really don't know what kind of rock is that but it sure like it has some metallic gold in it. I am sure your grandson will find that awesome! Take Care and God Bless! Have a smile in your heart always!

i never have any idea what's that piece of stone named of because i am not fond of collecting such items. i used to have a piece of gold when i was in college. it was a gift from my father. but when i graduated from college i have it molded into a necklace. i have that necklace for a long time, not until when i climb the highest peak of the mountain here in the Philippines. i lost it on our way of climbing the peak.
