Another job I didn't get..now I'm crying, I'm so disgusted

I got a call from the temp service I'm registered with. I interviewed for a job yesterday and again, they picked someone else. I was very qualified for the job with years of experience but they chose someone else and I'll wager that someone is a lot younger than I am. I'm so discouraged. I have a small income but I need more to pay my taxes and save some towards my retirement. I'm 54. I need a job. I go on interviews and never get the job! I'm limited, I can't stand up very long due to arthritis and scoliosis so I need a job sitting down. I'm at my wit's end and I'm sick and tired of getting rejected. I can't prove age discrimination. I don't know why I don't get these jobs. I feel horrible, like I'm worthless even though I know I'm overreacting.

Sorry, to hear. I'll think positive thoughts for you. I hope you feel better and best of luck finding a job. I need to get one too and I'm also a little older than most applicants and I also have scoliosis and a herniated disc so I too need a sit down job.

Yes, it's kind of tough when we're working with those kind of limitations! I'd be more than happy to work at Walmart or something if they just had sit-down jobs! I've found wonderful relief from epidurals but can't really afford one right now. Have you ever had one? They're wonderful and relieve your pain for months. With me, the relief usually lasts for at least most of a year!

I had 2 after my car accident and a host of trigger point injections. They helped up to a certain point, but I still can't stand for hours without incredible pain.

If it makes you feel any better I'm in the same boat that you are. I applied for a job the other day, one that I'm well qualified for and I hear back today that they are not interested in hiring me but I'm more than welcome to apply for any of their other jobs they have. When checking, they don't have any other jobs open that I am qualified for. I've applied for several jobs in the past and no one is ever interested in hiring me. I'm pretty annoyed with it. Makes me not want to apply for anymore.

I'm young so it's not like I feel like I'm old or anything I just feel like people don't even give me a chance. Just because I haven't worked in fast food joints during my teen years or worked doing other stupid stuff doesn't mean I don't know how to work and that I'm not a hard worker or that I'm not qualified to work. This is why I don't put in job applications much, it makes me feel pretty worthless when they won't work with me.

It's so demeaning and demoralizing, isn't it? Just makes you want to quit trying. It makes me feel as if I'm worthless, even though I know that's not true. It makes me angry, too, when I go back into the business and see that they've hired someone younger than me. We have to keep up the effort, though. There's a job waiting for both of us and it's probably a lot better than those other crummy places, so there!

I feel your pain, but have you tried ringing them up or writing to them and asking why you didn't get the job and if they say something constructive then you can always work on that. I have a similar problem and I am 17, as I have just left school last year I don't have much work experience and they seem to expect everyone to have been born with work experience as they are not willing to train people, especially in retail they seem to want people that were born sales assistants or something.

They always say they went with a better qualified candidate. This last job was for an answering service and I used to be part owner of one! I have 15 years experience with that job. Who could possibly be better qualified?! I've been where you are, it's very frustrating. You have no experience but can't get any because you have none! You'll get something eventually, I hope it's soon!

That is ridiculous that you didn't get the job with that much experience, the only person that would be better qualified is someone with more years experience and fully owned a company, but that is unlikely.

i am sorry to hear of your problem, have you ever thought about a school bus driver job or school bus aide? i have been a school bus driver for 36 years now and i truly enjoy it, it pays well and also most schools provide benefits if needed. i don,t know where you live but most cdl's [license] you obtain are paid for by the school system and they train you as well. for the aide it doesn,t require too much other than a criminal background check and you are mostly just riding the bus for a special needs student, the days are usually spit up, 2 hr in am and 2 in pm. just thought i might give you options. hope things get better for you.

That's a great suggestion but they don't need any drivers. Believe me, I've applied and looked at school districts and old peoples' homes and the field is full! Thanks for the encouragement, though, and the helpful suggestion.

I'm sorry Dragon that you haven't been hired yet. Its really bad out there. My daughters boyfriend is young and he has been out of work for the last few months. He was laid off and thought it would be easy to get another job. My daughter says he has put in so many applications and done interviews that he can't figure out what he is doing wrong. I don't think either of you is doing anything wrong, as so many people are applying for one position. I wish that a snap of the fingers would solve the countries problems now, but this is not possible. Sadly, think its going to get worse this summer with many teenagers trying to get a part time job willing to accept minimum wage. Good luck and hope your hired soon. I'm hoping one of the posters has a suggestion that leads to a job.

I hope your daughter's BF gets a job soon. It's getting so that everyone is having trouble making ends meet, I don't know how much more of this the country can take.

Thank you for your encouragement and the link, there are interesting articles there that I intend to read. I'm not much into online businesses because they all seem like scams but that site does look a bit different. I don't want to be rich. I just don't want to live in a cardboard box on the street when I'm old!

All I can suggest is that you do a little research to find an 'equal opportunity' employer and try getting work with them. From what you say in your post, it's clear that discrimination is frowned upon if not downright illegal.

Discrimination is illegal here but proving it is another matter, it's very difficult to do that. I've gotten a couple of good resources from this string of posts that I will look into and I'll be applying to the state employment office on Monday. These wonderful people of myLot are great and you've all helped me so much!

Start posting of 50 to 100 in MyLot. It may bring some amount. Since you are sitting in your home without any job, posting in MyLot is the best. Besides you can still search for a good job. You are an experienced person and it is not that much difficult to get job. Best of Luck.

Thank you for the suggestion, I really enjoy myLot so it's not a "job" to wander around the place and post and reply. Unfortunately, experience seems to be second to youth and good looks. I'm sure I'll get something eventually, I'm just impatient and tired of rejection.

I don't think that you are overreacting at all. I am 51 and I have gotten every job that I have ever applied for until lately! I changed careers about 10 yrs ago, I became a truck driver. I was out on the road for about 6 yrs and have been doing local jobs since I have come off of the road. But, now I would like to find something that I don't have to drive. Do you know that I can't even get a job in a grocery store! Yikes! I did that several years ago but I recently applied and I never got called. I know that it is my age!

It's horrible, isn't it? We older people are more reliable, we're always on time and never call in sick but employers don't seem to care about that. We aren't slackers, either, we believe in working for our money! These employers don't know what they're missing and in the meantime we older people are getting desperate.

There were times in my life when I felt like that and worse. I crried and prayed to the Lord to open up a way for me in his own time, not in my time but his. One day I was tired looking for jobs, and I decided to go job hunting again, I did not give up under some touch circumstances. I went directly to a shopping center. The first store said they were not hiring. The second one hired me. God had a job there waiting for me. I was at my wits end. So my dear friend, I just want to say, dont give up, no matter how dismal your job situation may look in your eyes. There is one who is greater than us and He has it all in Control. His timing is always right, and he comes through for us right on time. I think I have said my little bit. Best wishes to you. BE PATIENT. "PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE"!

You are right, and I shouldn't be so discouraged. It's just that continued rejection makes me feel worthless, although I know in my heart that it's not true. Thank you for your kind words! It's so nice to have a place like this that provides such wonderful support from people all over the world! And you, being in China, have the most reason to be sad and yet you try to cheer me up. I have no conception of real hardship, thank God, and you've put me in my place tonight. Thank you!

I've been down that road myself dragon. Right now I'm in training for a job that I didn't go to school for and chances are it may be too much for me to handle. My family tells me to stick to it but I feel overwhelmed by the flood of information i'm getting. Have you tried perhaps going into a business of your own? A friend and I are considering opening up a consignment boutique because we find that the best line of work is working for yourself- no one else will give you adequate compensation for your efforts.

I considered my own business but I haven't gotten any good ideas for one yet. I had thought to sell antiques and stuff on eBay but eBay is losing more and more buyers. Good luck on your training! I know the overwhelmed feeling when you're learning something new but remember that they don't expect you to absorb it all and be perfect right away, even though you expect it of yourself.

I can understand why they would choose someone who is younger...they may want the person that they are going to hire to be there for a long time. But on the other hand I think it is unacceptable to do this. It is age discrimination. I know you said that you can't prove it. But if those companies behave like that then just remember, you don't want to work for a company like that.

Hi dragon54u, I'm sorry to hear you missed out on that particular job - don't be sad, you're obviously being kept for something better. It might be a stretch, but with your qualifications, do you know anyone else or would you be able to find anyone else who would have the get-up to start your own care center? Anyway, that aside, you've got my interest - what are you planning to do in your retirement? Just by the by, I know some people who have arthritic joints, and the've gotten some relief from using Glucosamine and Emu Oil. It doesn't work overnight, but it does help a lot, apparently. They get Glucosamine from shellfish, so I hear, but it's a real job to catch an Emu and squeeze him to get the oil. You've actually got cheaper Emu Oil in the USA than we have in Australia now, because some enterprising folk have started up Emu farms there (and they spend all day chasing after Emus with buckets). Do cheer up, and don't stress out over that temp job. There's a whole world still out there, and it's your story that you're writing with each new day.

OH, Dragon54u, don't get discouraged! I know it is very hard and disappointing to not get the jobs but God does have the ideal job waiting for you in His time. I am so sorry you are having such a hard time finding work. I will help you out all I can if I find something on here but as you well know they are few and far between. Please, please, know that we love you and are here for you. God has closed these doors on you but He will open a window or another door. Be patient and wait on the Lord! I do feel your hurt and disappointment because I am your friend. I am here for you, please PM me and cheer up. I know you will get lots of encouraging words from your other mylot friends. Love ya

Dont give up and dont be discouraged as a lot of employers do go for the younger people but in most neighborhoods there are special employment agencies that do cater to older people and they have sit down jobs also. Have you tried your local library? they often hire clerks and that' is a well paying job and its a sit down job too. Also try your local hospital as they often hire clerks for all different departments. I know its very discouraging as you would think that employers would want someone older with more experience but too many think with the wrong organ and look for the young pretty women who often do not have brain one in their heads.

Thanks for your suggestions! I did work a temporary job last October and didn't get to keep it as the software was very difficult to learn--they ended up getting someone in the company to fill in for the pregnant lady since nobody could learn it--and the supervisor said she'd make a good reference for me for the hospital they were a branch of. I'd forgotten about that till your post. I considered the library but this is a very small city and they don't need anyone. I'm keeping my eye on the city job postings! Thanks for your help!

hi again also think outside the box, how about bus driving or cab driving if you know how to drive, also a lot of schools use teachers helpers, adult women to help them in the class rooms. just some more thoughts.

I think that no one is worthless unless they choose to be. From your words and desire for a job, you are not even close. Just put that out of your mind. Have you checked any online job search site? I know that where I live, we have one called southeastgeorgiahelpwanted.com There may be something similar in your area. I have always tried to keep an optimistic attitude about such things. If you didn't get this job its because there is one even better and more suited for you just around the corner.

Thank you for your words of encouragement! Yes, I think the job I need it waiting for me but I either need to find it or it's not yet available. I search online and am registered with temp services, too. I owe a LOT in taxes so I'm getting rather desperate. But heck, what can they do after they take all I have? They can't take my children or my soul, and those are the only things in this world that are really important! I bet that just kills 'em!!
