What do you do about splinters and cactus pokies and other things in your skin?

I moved my planter of cactus. Even with leather gloves some of the very fine spines poked through and are in my knuckles. I went in and spread white school glue over the affected areas, and am watching it dry while I type at MyLot. Another thing to do is to pull them with masking tape, or apply a peel off facial mask. I have used them all
in the past. Do you have any other suggestions?
Other than to not get them in the first place?

At one time I was in a auto accident and I was thrown in cactus. I could not get them out by myself. I used something you called Magesium Sulphate Ointment, I think you can get it at the pharmacy. That took them all out. They all came to the surface and I just picked them out. It was amazing.

That reminds me that milk of magnesia is supposed to draw sores and heal them.Thanks.

Unless they are 100% under the skin, we use good old duct (duck) tape. Just put piece over the area (sticky side down of course) . Wait a minute and peel it off. This is really great for fine cactus spines and tiny pieces of wood or metal.

I think I will look for my duct tape, cause some of the tiny spines are still there.

Still working on them. They are hard to see.

I got a splinter last week in my finger while I was picking weeds around my rose bush. Boy did it hurt to.I got a pin and tryed to get it out, but it was to deep. so I just left it in my finger.
couple days later the splinter worked it self to the top and i got it out.
I never heard about the white glue, but next time I get a splinter I will try it.
I dont have any suggestions for you except keep doing what you been doing.

Sometimes those rose thorns can get in and get infected.

You read my mind. Although prevention really is the best medicine, I do sometimes get those fellas under my skin, but when moving a pot with cactus, I first wrap the whole thing in newsprint--yes, and since our local paper stopped circulating off line, that did create a problem. No matter, now we subscribe to news from the next town over. Instead of pulling the needles out with masking tape, I use the tape to secure the newspaper sheets and lift with that in order to not get poked. My condolences, though.
As my hot-house Okra gets bigger I am wondering if I will get pricklies caring for it in the AaeroGarden. It sure is getting big fast!

I had forgotten that newspaper trick. Could have saved myself from some pain.

Honestly with slivers, splinters and other pokies under my skin...I use a sewing needle to carefully "lift" or pull them out. I'd never heard of the white glue trick.
I cant leave them under my skin as i get infections VERY easily and take months to heal after getting an infection.

These are really fine, like hair and I cannot get them with a needle. Most of them are out now. I will do more to them tomorrow. I agree, the infections can be nasty.

Ouchie. I can feel your pain! I would remove the little bugger with tweezers if you can get a hold of it. I also remember using duct tape to get it out too.

Just the other day my daughter picked
up a stick outside and I was cautioning her
about splinters.
She has not gotten her first splinter yet.
So I know that will freak her out.
I'll keep all these tips in mind!
Thanks for the helpful info.
Be well.

I usually try to dig them out with my nails, and if I can't get them that way, then I use a quilting pin to dig it out. It kind of hurts, but it works and keeps it from getting infected. Just be sure to sterilize the pin before hand, and clean the area afterwards.

I never seem to notice them until well after I've been working with the cacti. They must wriggle around under the skin then just reach a certain point and hurt.
I normally stick the affected part in warm water then use a needle to try and work the offending spine out, but I absolutely love your idea with the glue and will defiantely give that a try the next time I have a small one.

If you go to Walgreen's or another pharmacy, they have behind the counter a black tar salve that's a "drawing salve." That means that whatever you have ..like a splinter or something under your skin..it will pull it our "draw" it out over two-three days or so. It smells like a pine tree? And it's thick and black, so you'll want to wear a band-aid to protect your clothes from getting some on. But it works GREAT and you don't have to see a doctor for it then or grab a needle and try to coax it out when it already hurts.
Go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for it.. I don't know why they keep it BEHIND the counter, but it isn't a prescription and it is always a good thing to have on hand in the house for things like that.
Last year my husband got a plam fromd pointed end stuck WAY down onto his finger and we put that on. In three days he saw the end sticking out of his finger and it puled out..all inch and a half of it! OUCH! But then it healed nice. It also helps draw out acne and other infections. It's the pine smell and colour that are hard to deal with the couple of days. But it beats surgery and the doctors office!
It's made by a company called Goldine. The salve is Ichthammol Ointment 20%.
Hope this helps! That must hurt!

Going to have to look for that tomorrow. These are very much like little hairs. The big spines were easy to get out.
