Do your cats attack and bite each other for no reason?

Just now my big male cat jumped at my female cat and tried to bite her. He chased her around and I thought the whole event would end in bloodshed. He seemed very angry. It was not the playful type of cat fighting. I'm not sure what he thinks the female cat has done. But, certainly such cat behavior is not welcome in my home. A few minutes before this event happened, my child picked up the female cat and walked around with her as if she were a baby. I don't usually let her hold the cats, so she put her down right away. And, I was wondering if this might have upset the male cat. Is this a territorial issue? Do you think that's possible? What could cause sudden angry outbursts from cats?

My kittens do that to each other all the time. They are just playing I know it seems like they are fighting but they arent'. My kitties love to bite each other around the neck and each others tails! Then after they are down they cuddle up and take a nap together.

That's adorable! I wish my "babies" with fur would do that. My big cat and EB (female cat) used to do that. They would cuddle up and fall asleep. Of course, they were both babies at the time. He was about one year old and she was just about eight weeks old at the time. They were and still are very tolerant of each other. At least on most days.

Sounds like your cats were playing. Ours do that all the time.

I know that I've had cats that get very aggressive when they are playing and will often bite each other hard and jump on each other. How did the female cat respond? Did she crouch down and roll on her back with her ears back? That would be the classic submission pose that would tell the other cat that she submits and not to jump on her anymore. If she did that, then I would say the male was probably too rough with her. It's entirely possible that the male was reasserting his role as the dominant cat after your child picked her up.

yup they may seem mad but they are just playing. for you to figure out if they are playing or if they are now mad, always look at their ears, if they are folded backwards and their tail/feathers are standing up, it means that they are angry. my male cat does jump to my female cat all the time without warning, and they are "strangers" meaning the male cat is the new kid on the block and my other cats are the ones that came before him. my male cat doesnt look angry but my female cat does when he wrestles her. she even hisses at him and runs away.

My cat and kitten do play fight, I have never seen them really bite each other or attack each other. I think the cat doesn't really always like the kitten, but then he doesn't think he is a cat!!! He does hiss at the kitten for no reason, but the kitten doesn't care. When we first got the kitten , the kitten wanted to be friends with the cat and did sleep in the same bed as the cat. But the cat doesn't want to be friends with the kitten. We have had the kitten since october and he still tries every now and again to be the cat's friend!!

Cats are so fickle with each other! One minute they are best of friends and the next they are running around chasing each other.
