Not a 'Godfather'

My nephew is going to have a 'naming ceremony', it's kind of a non-religous Christening, so, I suppose it could be called an 'Ening', anyway, my partner is going to be our nephews 'godfather', but they don't want him to be a 'godfather', they want a different name for him, 'guardian' sounds too boring, we can't think of anything else.
Can any of you make any polite suggestions please? Thank you.

Funnily enough, this is the one the parents have gone for! :)

Douglas Adams had ungodparents for his daughter or non-denominational guardians. Neither sound too good though.

Supporting Adults and Mentors is all I can find. I will keep looking and thinking and get back to you if I come up with anything. I'm sure there must be a nice word.

Our church do naming ceremonies too as they believe in believer baptism so do not baptise babies! I am called 'heir ' by my nephew as when my sister was adopting him she had to write a will and put serious consideration into what would happen to him if anything awful befell her and/or my brother in law and he is my 'inheritance' lol I was a bit worried about how he would feel about me calling him my inheritance at first but he loves it and tells everyone that I am his substitute Mum! lol xxx
