Home with no power!

What a night. Tornado warnings through Maryland started around 2.30pm yesterday and I was watching and waiting to see when it would hit our area - Vienna. Maddy was expected home at around 3.15pm and I got a little worried. The winds picked up, it started to pour, next thing I hear is thunder and lightening and then BAM, the power goes off. I call the school and they said they were keeping the kids there until the storm blew over (or moved on). Phew, but still I wish he was home with me. By 3.40 I went with a neighbor to pick up our kids. They were still in their classrooms a little shaken but ok. They were told to line up in the hallway with their hands over their heads, and curl up like a turtle when the storm came. We lit candles and played cards, watched half a movie before my battery died on my laptop and read some books. We snacked on fruits and cookies, ate chicken sandwiches for dinner and then I read a book to Maddy and we both fell asleep. The power was off until 11.30pm. Apparently the power cut affected 196,000 homes in Virginia and probably more. I'm just glad the storm has passed (touchwood). Hows the weather in your area? Maddy is back at school today, happy that he doesn't have to stay home with Mommy LOL

I can imagine how scared you were. We have had some horrible weather here the last week and my husband is out of town on business too. We have been under tornado warnings with tornados being only a few miles away. Also, we had flash flooding on Saturday and so many areas around us are still flooded! It is crazy here and it has been scary for us. We were literally stranded in our home with water all around us on Saturday and yet were not in any real danger. I just felt like it was worse that we couldn't get out. Glad to hear that things are better now and I have a friend that lives in Maine that I think that I will call now.

I have seen the floods on tv in the news - not good at all. I hate these storms, they have come and gone over the past two weeks, not as bad as this one but still scary for my son. I hope all is ok there now :)

I hate the rain when it pours heavily. I don't mind a slight drizzle but lots of rain, I don't like.

It was a scary and glad that my son was home after all of that. He was the one I was more worried about. It's the worse I have seen since we have been in the US. I hope they stay away for good this time LOL

Same thing happened here. There were plenty of power outages. Some didn't get power back until today. I had to deal with an overnight outage. Since it was dark already I just slept when the power failure hit. Its still stormy in the area, its been sporadic but damaging.

That is never fun. We had a tornado warning once when my kids were to come home. My boys were scared cause they were heading to the bus when the sirens went off and they were rushed back into the school. Thankfully it wasnt bad in our area we didnt even lose power that time. We are expecting some stuff later today that could be very severe.

I am so glad that your son was ok.Here in Kansas we been having winds all day 35mph. We have been in a tornado watch most of the day. In a town about 2 hours from us they had softball hail. There were winds as high as 75mph. We do get a lot of tornado warnings and watches here during this time of year. I hope it dont come our way.

We were suppose to get some rain this afternoon but it hasn't happened so I'm relieved. I hope the weekend isn't a wet one.

Wow that sounds pretty emotional! No wonder the kids were a bit shaken poor scones! Luckily I have never experienced a tornado but we have had some very severe storms here in the past! Right now though our weather is warm and dry and very nice! Sounds like you guys made the most of the powerout and had some good times together - my kids would love that! xxx

We did have a nice time together and I let him choose what we should do, to get his mind off the terrible weather outside. Right now our power has been going on and off so we are playing cards and I'm typing away in here. He is beating me 3 games to 2 LOL

That sounds really scary, I know how you must have felt being apart from your boy in such bad weather, I would have wanted to be with them. I must say that the one thing I like about my UK home is that the weather although rubbish is not as bad as what you get. I have a fear of storms and when I see what you get on the news I don't know how you cope with it. It is one of the scariest things that nature has to use on us and it is horrible. I am glad to know that you are all OK and that the storm has passed, hope it stays passed for a good while now.

It was a little scarey, moreso because my son wasn't with me when the storm hit and my husband is currently overseas in Jamaica for work. I'm just glad my cellphone still worked during the most part so I could keep in contact with the school, my neighbors and my hubby.

I know huh? He was scared last night because it was just the two of us and he missed his dad. I just reassured him and played games with him to keep him occupied. But as soon as daylight appeared, he was like, YAY back to school! LOL

That sounds like a scary situation knowing something like that could hit and your child isn't w/ you but protected somewhere else in his case it was school. I know I would have been in panic if it was me. We don't get tornado's here in NH thankgod but some of the lightning storms we get can be very scary and cause high winds terenchil down pours where you can't see anything and power outages. I am petrified of lightning storms I will hide in the hallway til it passes. I am so afraid that something is going to strike us and cause a fire. I always ask god to please keep us all safe and make the storm pass quick. The only one that was very bad last summer was when the lightning hit the transformers out side our complex makeing it sound like a bomb went off put more than 1/2 the street or more out of electricity til PSNH came out and was fixing the transformer's and lines all around. It was several hours befor any of us had power again. I guess you never know what mother nature is going to do and when we all have to be prepared for it.

It was a scary situation. I did panic, calling around frantically. I calmed down when I was told by the school that they were all ok and will remain there until the storm had passed. I just wanted him home with me and when we picked him up, I was so relieved and went straight home.
