How Can I make myself Like Fruit and Vegetables?

You may not believe this, but I am 43 years old and I have never eaten a salad in my entire life. I Never ate tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, celery, peaches, plums, oranges, and the list could go on and on. It will be easier for me to list the fruits and veggies I HAVE eaten, but not regularly. I eat Apples, seedless white grapes, and fruit coctail in a can. I eat cooked sweet baby carrots, and green beans. And when spinach is cooked in soup like Italian Wedding Soup, I can eat that. I really need to start eating other fruits and vegetables, particularly the ones that provide your body with calcium. I was told by a nutritionist that a problem I'm having is from my system being too acidic from me eating mostly grains, meats, nuts and seeds. She was exactly right. Grains and Meats are pretty much the only things I have EVER eaten! I need to find a way to start liking other things. Today I made homemade chicken soup and put a whole bag of frozen mixed vegetables in it. Normally I used to only put the chicken and noodles in it. But I could eat it with the veggies in it today. I need to think of a way I can start to like other fruits and vegetables. Any Ideas?

Vegetables and fruits are easily digestible foods. Try to consume whenever you get a chance. I use the fruits and make a fruit salad, sometimes with ice cream, sometimes without ice cream I eat and serve the same to family members. They enjoy eating, though it is cumbersome to peel the skin off the fruits, cut into small pieces, remove the seeds etc. As far as vegetables are concerned, we are vegetarians and hence along with rice, we cook 2 or 3 different dishes out of vegetables. there is not a single day, our meals go without vegetables. Vegetables cucumber, carrot, onions, beetroot, lettuce leaves all go for making sandwiches and salads which are really tasty.

Fruit with Ice Cream might be good! And there is a microwave dinner I like that has rice with finely chopped veggies like diced carrots and spinach in it and it's in a sauce and I like that. Maybe I can try to make something like that myself. Thanks for your comment!

Is there a reason why you don't eat them. Is it the taste or is it that you don't have an interest in them? I remember not liking some vegetables when I was young but I changed as an adult, I think because I cooked them my way and didn't boil them to pulp like my mum used to! Some ideas would be to use sauces, spices, herbs. Be creative and see what makes your vegies taste better. Be creative in presentation. If you don't put much effort into this, maybe change a bit and see what you can do. And perhaps be a bit 'upper class' meaning mix mango with chicken salads, that type of thing. Mix your vegies with nuts, like carrot and walnuts and sultanas, or grated beetroot with apple and walnuts. Present with color and make it fun. It helps get the taste buds used to different flavors. Honey & Mustard dressing is really popular at the moment, if you're not good with lettuce then sprinkle a bit over and yum. (Well yum for me.) When I was in the States I fell in love with Kale. That is a vegetable not common in Australia. I find broccoli and kale (separately) have an amazing texture to them and with the right condiments they taste fantastic. Broccoli is my favorite all time vegetable - it has this washing effect through my digestive system - from the throat to....the other end! Fruit maybe a bit more tricky. Usually they are mixed into pies and pastries which is probably not a healthy choice. Here's a healthy recipe. Chop up dates (a few handfuls) cover in water put on heat and simmer to create a date juice say 20 minutes. Include a tablespoon of honey for extra sweetness if desired. Put aside. Slice bananas lengthways (as many as you want to feed the family (usually one per person), fry in butter until golden brown. Line baking dish with bananas, pour over date & honey juice, sprinkle dates and chopped almonds or hazlenuts. Keep warm in low oven until ready to serve. It's healthy and yum and easy.

In some cases it is the taste. In other cases it is the texture that doesn't seem edible to me. I must be really strange. Lol. Thanks for the ideas and the recipe!

Try mixing them into foods that have sauces like soup, maybe pasta with sauce etc. It means that if you don't like the taste of the vegetable too much it is covered, but you are still getting the nutrition. And if we have loads of fruit and it looks like no one is going to eat it then we cut it up and put it into jelly, so you have fruit jelly. You can have it by itself or with ice cream.

I wish i knew a good way to make yourself like them. If i could find a way i would do it cause i generally hate any kinda fruit or vegetable. There are very few i will eat and actually like. I dislike anything green. The two vegetables that i actually will eat and like are corn and potatoes. Maybe if you try putting something on the vegetables and fruit that you enjoy to help with the taste of them.

Yes, I'm like you. Unfortunately Corn and Potatoes are not the kind of veggies that are good for us. Thanks for commenting.

well momalisa65, it is never too late to begin a good act. just have faith on yourself. look around and you will see millions of people munching on tons of vegetables and fruits all the 365 days of the year. you can easily draw inspiration from them. if that is difficult, then i have a very simple solution. sit down with a bowl of your favourite noodles or soup and dish with fresh washed fruits or vegetables. take 4-5 bites from the veggies and 1 bite from your cherished item. by this you won't feel away from chicken soup and yet develop proximity with vegetables and fruits. happy eating.

That's a good way to do it. That's how I learned to like Water just 2 years ago! Lol. I would take a sip of water and then drink some Mountain Dew. Eventually I started drinking a whole bottle of water and then a bottle of Mountain Dew. Now I can just drink water all the time. Thanks for your comment!

The best way to like is force yourself to eat them. In the past i never liked fruits and vegetables. But i forced myself to eat and later i could not resist them. I think now that fruits and vegetables are much more healthier than meat. And the moment i started liking fruits and vegetables, it seems like a small tag has been programmed on to my brain saying "Yummy...green is good"

I make a thick chicken and mushroom soup with a cauliflower base as the thickener. I cook a cauliflower, cut into small florets, then put the cauliflower with a little of the water in which it was cooked into a liquidiser or food processor and grind it right down to a thick liquid. Put it back into the pan, and add two chicken stock cubes and some sliced mushrooms, plus a little more liquid to bring it to the consistency required. Then bring to the boil and simmer for a couple of minutes, until the stock cubes have blended into the soup base. If you wish, add some cooked chicken pieces, and a little cream or creme fraiche although this is not necessary. You will find this soup very nutritious and enjoyable. I use several different fruits to make a fresh fruit salad, then add sugar or sweetener and squeeze lemon juice over it. I do tend to use the fruits I think are best for me, like kiwi fruit, banana, orange or satsuma, pineapple, strawberries, pears, apples and grapes. The lemon juice stops it discolouring, but you'll need to sweeten it up a little. Fresh fruit salad is an easier way of eating several different fruits, because you only end up eating a little of each and it's more bearable if you need to get used to the flavour of certain fruits before eating a whole one. Broccoli and Cauliflower taste excellent with a cheese sauce poured over them, thus disguising the taste a little, and my dad used to put white sauce on parsnips. They tasted good too, although I prefer them roasted myself. Swede is nice mashed with a little butter and black pepper too. There are all sorts of ways. How about a bowl of stir-fry vegetables? I stir fry onions, peppers, tiny broccoli and cauliflower florets, mange tout, baby sweetcorn, and thinly sliced carrots. I stir fry in butter and a little olive oil and then drain the excess fat off before serving. I hope some of this helps. Brightest Blessings.

Ooooops, I knew I'd forget something... I also use mushrooms and celery in my stir fry.

Satsuma is a small, orange-like fruit, but it's sweeter, and has smaller segments. Swede is a red-skinned root vegetable which when you cook it, comes out yellowish orange in colour. I mash mine with butter and pepper.

add veggies to meat loaf and to soups and stews, make a salad with a variety of colorful veggies, fruits can be made into desserts you likelike puddingsand pies, and fruit crumbles, and even in some cakes like strawberry short cake. Also a variety of veggies can be added to pasta dishes along with some meat.

Good for you for taking responsibility for your health and making healthier choices. If you eat these foods on a regular basis, you will develop a taste for them. I saw an experiment once on a medical show and they determined that if you eat a small bite of a food for 21 days, and they did this with food the person absolutely disliked, by the end of that time you will not only be able to tolerate eating the food but you will likely actually enjoy it. (And one of the people they showed from the experiment was a child). I like to make fruit smoothies with fresh and frozen fruit, a little milk and a blender. I also like to sautee frozen mixed veggies with some herbs and have it over brown rice. Try to eat fresh whenever possible, then frozen, then canned only when necessary. Especially canned fruit- it is often full of added sugar. I know you aren't necessarily going vegetarian, but here are a couple of (vegetarian) sites that will have loads of healthy fruit and veggie recipes for you to play with. http://vegkitchen.com/index.htm http://myhq.com/public/s/u/susanv/

Also, if you like soy sauce, a good replacement for that is a product called Bragg's Liquid Aminos. http://www.bragg.com/products/liquidaminos.html?gclid=CP-GvNXi4ZMCFRJdxwodk25lWA It is typically available at health food stores, though I did recently see it at a "regular" supermarket that does have a large organic section.

I do believe in the 21 day idea. It's worked for me in other areas of my life. Sauteed mixed veggies over brown rice sounds good. And yes, I was told by my friend who is dietician that raw is best, frozen is second best, and canned is pretty much not even good for you. Thanks for the links too!!

Casseroles, you can always sneak veggies in them, chicken pot pie, but the best think you can do is train yourself to eat vegetables. Just take it slow and MAKE yourself eat at least one serving of veg. or fruit a couple of times a day. Children are trained to eat veg. (it isn't a natural inclination) which is probably why you don't eat them. GOOD LUCK!

Yea, a little bit a day sounds right. That's how I started to like the sweet baby carrots. Every time I made them I just had one or two. Then the next time I had three or four. Now I don't even count them. I like them so I just take a whole bunch on my plate. Thanks for your comment!

I think we are long lost sisters. I also do not like to eat vegetables and some fruits. But, all i can say is, i do try to eat vegetables everytime i feel really unhealthy. What i do is that i eat it with rice, chew it a couple of times and then swallow it with water. It helps a lot. Another technique is you blend the vegetables (for example, carrots or potatoes), drink it and then drink water. But i think the best idea would be not to force yourself to eat vegetables or fruits. Maybe one at a time, you can add it to your favorite soup or meal and then eat some pieces which your system can still take. Eventually, you will be get used to the idea of eating vegetables during meals. If worse comes to worst, you can still take supplements and vitamins to support your body system. Also, drink milk for your calcium needs.

Lol, thanks for your comment. I do take my vitamins. I had an Aunt who never ate a salad until she was in her 20's and then she started loving it. I always thought I would grow up to be like her, but I didn't....or at least not yet.

Really, you never like to eat other fruits and vegetables other than those you mentioned? Well, You really need to eat more of those. vitamins and minerals that are present in the fruits and vegetables can be easily attained from vitamins and minerals in tablet forms however the other important thing is the fiber that you're missing out. I suggest you start by making it a fruit and vegetable shake, it's easy to prepare and readily available. From there you can select the fruits and vegetables you like and find a recipe for those and try to cook it at your leisure.

Thanks! Do you know of any websites that have recipes for fruit smoothies that are not milky? Just pureed fruit? I get a Bottled fruit smoothie that I love. I can't write the brand name here or it will call it mature content. Lol. I'll leave the letter A out of it. They're called N_KED fruit juice smoothies. Anyway, I'd like to be able to make something similar to that myself if I knew how.

Oh mama, having too much acid is definitely quite difficult for the body specially in the morning, this happened to my wife a year ago,I was always asking her,Are you pregnant?Because every morning she feel aching stomach and always vomiting in the morning. Until then we consulted to doctor and got the findings of gastro. The doctor then advice to eat some fruits like apple, grapes, banana and some vegetables too.Now my wife love to eat so much of vegetables, steam broccoli or mix it with canton is awesome. I would suggest you to try stewed vegetables with beans, cabbage, chayote, maize, carrots and sweet potato. This would be great.Thanks.

I am so surprised that there are so many fruits and vegetables you don't eat. everyone knows vegetables and fruits are very good for our health. I am much younger than you. However, I like vegetables a lot.My mom,who is of the similar age to yours, looks very young and fit. She hearts fruits especially apples, oranges and watermelons. You know, an apple a day keeps a doctor away. For the balance of your body, eat less acidic food from now on.Best wishes!!!!

You are an wonderful woman. At age 43 never eat salad ! OK you can eat this salad 24 hours i.e. any time you want if you can make it. Following is the recepie for you:- INGREDIENTS * 3/4 pound sliced bacon * 1 large head iceberg lettuce, shredded * 1/4 cup sliced onion * 1/4 cup thinly sliced celery * 1 (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, drained and sliced * 1 (10 ounce) package frozen peas * 1 cup mayonnaise, or to taste * 1 tablespoon white sugar * 2 tablespoons grated Romano or Parmesan cheese * 4 tomatoes, cut into wedges * 2 hard-cooked eggs, sliced * 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Spread the lettuce out on a large serving dish or bowl. Sprinkle the onion, celery, water chestnuts and frozen peas (unthawed) over the lettuce in layers. Spread mayonnaise over the top like a frosting. Sprinkle with sugar and grated cheese. Cover and refrigerate overnight. 2. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside. 3. Before serving, sprinkle crumbled bacon over the top, and garnish with tomato wedges, slices of hard-cooked egg, and parsley.

I know with me, it helped a lot putting sauces on my veggies at first. I can't handle sodium that much anymore, but when I could, that's how I was able to incorporate a lot of the vegetables into my diet. Perhaps if you found a salad dressing that you really liked you might like a salad. Also, don't be afraid to put a variety of fixings in your salads like olives and peppers. I even put meat in my salad. Then, after you get used to eating the vegetables, you can stop putting the sauces on them. Sauces are usually full of fat, so I wouldn't make it a permanent habit. Fruits are usually very easy. If you aren't allergic to sulfur, you can try dried fruits. You can also find some dried fruits without sulfur, too, like dates, raisins, and pineapple. I would look for ones without added sugar. These fruits taste like candies, but they're much healthier. The only thing is that they are high in calories.

The problem with me is, I like everything cooked. We marinate our chicken in Italian Dressing and I like the taste of that, but I can't imagine eating it cold over lettuce. Hey, maybe if we made that chicken, I could cut it up and put it on some lettuce and try it that way for a start? Thanks for your comment!

One idea that came from my grandma and is super tasty. In the mornings for breakfast, you take whatever fruits you do like. I perfer strawberries, peaches, and bananas in this. But you take those, and a cereal that stays really crunchy. There is this wheat cereal that my grandma suggested, it has no flavor in itself and actually is pretty nasty...lol but put in this it gives it that crunch and helps get that extra fiber. Then after all that is mixed together take some whipped topping and mix it all through the fruit. Its yummy...my kids like it to. WIth the veggies, how about "hiding" them in your food. Like if you make a meatloaf or whatever, try dicing up whatever veggies you dont really care for really small and mix it in with the meat. Or just maybe start slowly introducing them again to yourself. Try cooking them differently then you might normally see them. WIth brocoli my kids REALLY love chedder brocoli bites. There are so many things you can do to change the flavor of a veggie. Recipezaar.com is my favorite recipe site, try that for some great veggie recipes..... I dont know what I would do if I didnt have my vegetables...we pretty much only eat meat as a side to our vegetables here. MY 3 year old and 1 year old are the same way. Cant hardly get them to eat meat.

i love fruits and vegetables but my son does not and i try to get him to eat them and try new things but with him it is not necessarily the taste he does not like but the texture. i have gotten him to eat apples occasionally and bananas if i drizzle some sugar free chocolate syrup on the banana and i sometimes put a bit of cinnamon and a tad of sugar on the apple to get him to eat it. i think it is all in the preparation of the vegetables. if the veggies are boiled and nothing is on them i will not eat them but i usually sautee my veggies in a smidge of olive or canola oil and add adobo for flavoring and they are delicious. try eating fruit on your cereal if you do not like it alone. i think you just have to experiment. good luck.

Hmmmm....Bananas might be good with chocoate syrup on them! In fact, I always loved the flavor of Raspberries but I didn't like to eat the actual fruit. So one day I bought some fresh rapsberries and covered them in melted chocolate and made chocolate covered raspberries! That's how I started eating those. Now when I eat them without chocolate, I dip them in some sugar. I just don't like them plain. But...I think I might like them on my cereal! Thanks for the ideas!

Hi Momalisa! Okay...here we go! I am not much for cooked veggies, but my family loves fresh, raw veggies. Yes, even my 6 year old boy! Every night for dinner we have a fresh cucumber, tomatoe, and baby spinach leaves. I cut them up and spray with a spritzer, or sprinkle with sea salt. During the day we usually have fruit with our lunch. We love bannana's and peanut butter, apples wedges with caramel, or pears with honey. I have also discovered the new steam in the bag veggies in the frozen section of the grocery store. These are great! They have some for immunity, health, and other things! The quality and taste of these compared to can is amazing! Give it a try and let me know how it works out for you!

Thanks for all your ideas. You mentioned Peanut Butter with bananas. I do like peanut butter, and someone else mentioned chocolate syrup with bananas. I might try to think of a way to mix peanut butter, chocolate and bananas together somehow. That should really hide the flavor of the banana!

Hi Momalisa65, I think you should try purchasing a juicer. My sister is a veggan and I bought her one for Christmas and she loves it. It was about $90, but well worth it. The price range is $29.99 to over $150. This way, you will get all of the veggies you need without eating it, you just drink it. Also, you can play around with the fruits and veggies until you find the taste you like. if you like fruit coctail and grapes...try putting mostly fruit coctail and grapes in, then add some peaches and broccoli and celery. You can try tomatoes with apples, grapes, watermelon, and mangos, this way you don't even taste the tomatoes. Make sure you use ice and a small amount of sugar for taste. Let me know what you think if you decide to try it.
