Forced Retirement

The company my husband works at has been forcing people to retire at a certain age. Do you work at a company that is downsizing or did work at one? I am certain 2009 is going to be a challenging year, as the company has offered him a package deal to retire. He was offered $25,000 and 1/2 of his pay to retire this year and turned it down. You may think that is crazy, but he will get a lot more retirement by staying longer. We are looking at many states to consider retiring in now. The one we live in isn't a good option because of the high cost of living. I suggested Oregon because of its lower costs, but my husband doesn't like rain. He doesn't know how I managed to survive in that weather for many years. His suggestion is Utah; however, I really dislike snow. We had the white stuff one year in Oregon and had to shovel a lot of it. It was a memory that I hope to forget in the future; however, that was in 1980. Its just as fresh in my mind, as if it happened yesterday. Any suggestions for us? We are looking for reasonable cost of living and weather that is nice at least some of the year.

South Carolina is beautiful. Close to the beach or the mountains. This is where we want to retire. Naturally, the closer to the ocean the more expensive but just head west and it does get cheaper. Good luck on your search.

Thanks for the reply. I will look into this state also. Also have added Florida to the list; however, will have to check the weather. I wear shorts year round, so don't have any cold weather clothing.

It sounds to me like you live in the "Tarnished State", which used to be the "Golden State",where I live. My Dad had to retire from the CHP after 32 years in November 2005, a day before my twins were born. Like you husband, he too got half of what he could have gotten, retirement wise. But, my Dad will never move away from his Mom, grandma, so he and my Mom stay in Cali. Even thought about Arizona or Idaho? At least there is not a lot of rain in Arizno, not so sure about Idaho. At least you would be living in your own private Idaho(The B-52's). God Bless!!

New Mexico was pretty reasonable last time I passed through and it has a temperate climate. It's a beautiful state and the people are wonderful.

I think New Mexico would be a good place to visit. My husband and I are going to visit these states to look at them once we figure out what parts of each state would be good choices. Some of the things I'll be looking to learn are climate throughout the state. I know there is a huge range in California. Thanks for the help.
