what would you feel if you are not really taken cared at the hospital? my niece just got home from the hospital yesterday. because she vomited a lot and they were afraid that she might get dehydrated. i was so excited to see again my niece out of the hospital. she's just 2 years of age. but when i held her, i noticed that her right arm was swelling! to the point that she can't even move her fingers. i checked if she have fever because its phlebitis(inflammation of veins). this happens when the IV fluids is infiltrated to your veins. it means that the needle inserted to you is no longer at the vein and the fluids will now go to your surrounding tissues! what i did, i get a towel soaked in hot water and gave her hot compress immediately. i asked my sister if she noticed her daughter's arm. actually im a nurse and i know that if a patient have a phlebitis, it is the negligence of the nurse that it happened. im really angry because its the hospital where will i be designated tomorrow! i actually want to meet the nurse who did this to my niece! so friends, if ever you'll get an insertion of IV catheter for your dextrose! don't hesitate to ask your nurses or doctors if you think that your arm is swelling!

When we have a family member in the hospital we don't hesitate to call a nurse when there is something wrong like there's bleeding in the IV line, the bottle is about to run out, etc. As a healthcare professional myself, I try to empathize with what the patients are going through. I try to imagine what if it's a loved one of mine who needs the help? That patient is someone's parent, someone's child, someone's spouse. That motivates me to give them the best possible care that I can.

you are so right, the nurses often get careless specially if you the patient have an iv going for a long p eriod of time. my training as a nurses aid stood me in good stead the last time i was in the hospital with bleeding diverticulitis and had an ongoing IV. I noticed immediateley that it was infiltrating into the surrounding tissues on my arm and called the nurse. she had a fit when she saw this and said.these young nurses just do not watch these IVs like they should. She removed the needle and reinserted it in a different vine. no more infiltrating at all. she was the oldest nurse on the medical floor.

wow! I can't imagine they don't master it since they are doing it everyday to a lot of people. You have to talk to her and report to the head at least she will take care her job more seriously, how if it happens to the people who have no idea about it. Thanks for the information chechuva!

that's sad story to know. i got hospitalized once, and i was on dextrose for 3 days. the first time they inserted the needle, i cried because it hurts, and i saw the blood coming out of the needle. the nurse said that they have to transfer the needle on my other arm as they have a hard time finding my veins on the other side. my arm was already swollen but i don't have the choice, i am not a nurse and i don't have any idea what was going on. sometimes, professionals are not so good in practicing their profession. i hope that hings like this will be change for the better.

That happened to me ages ago in a less-than-brilliant hospital, & my arm never went down! You would think SOMEONE would have noticed this, known what it was, & TREATED it, but noooo... And until I JUST NOW read your post, I never knew what caused it! It looks like Popeye's arm, & one doctor said it's unlikely it can ever be fixed NOW, as the tissues are damaged. Was he right? Or should I ask another doctor's opinion? Thanks for the info!!! Maggiepie

you're right! nowadays you seldom see health care professionals who would really give you the best and quality care.Hospitals do try and offers quality of care really, but how it will be implemented properly if the professional itself doesn't really care with their patients, some are just doing their duty for the sake of finishing it on time.Well, anyways I only prefer to some coz I also experienced it.

How awful, I would sue these people. Im sorry, but thats how life is, I mean you pay high professional fees and this is the kind of treatment you get? I think its only fair to file a lawsuit.
