Can You Freeze Cherries?

All over the place near me fresh cherries are being sold...I've been buying them like crazy as I love them..Now sometime ago I had read that eating a handful of cherries on a daily basis is actually good for any kind of arthritic or joint pain. Now some might remember from former discussions how I've been having a lot of pain especially in my joints of my ankles making it hard for me to walk. I've been taking that Glucosamine stuff and it's helped only a tad, but not much. Well I swear, ever since I've been eating fresh cherries the pain in my ankles has improved considerably. I haven't even had to take a pain killer of any kind So I'm thinking I would love to really stock up on cherries so I'll even have them when their season is over so I was thinking of freezing them...but do cherries freeze well??? I've heard of people freezing something like grapes, but never cherries...so does anyone know? And did you know cherries were so good for arthritis, goat or joint problems?

As far as I know you can freeze cherries. I wouldn't see why not. You can freeze almost any fruit as far as I know.

You are very welcome. If I find a freebie I can't use then I try to make sure someone who can, gets it.

I do not see why they would not freeze just like any other fruit Pye. Cherries never last around here long enough to get them in the freezer. But gosh I love them. No I have not heard about their other properties. mom use to stew them with sugar and spices and freeze them for cobblers... Our hands would be stained all colors of red by the time we got done pitting them. She also made homemade jellies. of course I am not quite the cook my mom was, so all I do with fruit is chop them up plop them in a freezer bag and toss into the freezer.

My great-grandmother did a lot of her own "canning" of just about everything and made jams and jellies as well...took a lot of patience to do that I'd imagine. oh, and thanks for not mentioning how good cherries are for goat..LOL

i've noticed berry-types don't hold up too well in the freezer, particularly raspberries due to ice crystals.as far as cherries go..maybe if you add something to it like pectin? i would think your best bet would be to dry them like raisins.they keep well that way.

Hi pyewacket! I do love cherries. I used to buy them by the pound each day when I was in London a few years back. But here in our country, there are no fresh cherries available in our local market. The only cherries available are the preserved ones in a bottle and they cost a lot. Thanks for the information, I never knew that they are good for any arthritic and joint pain. Take care. God bless!

That's strange that they don't have cherries where you are, and yes I can imagine the preserved ones would be very expensive

Yes cherries can be freeze. Maybe those green bags can be used to store them. My mother in law suffer from arthritis pain and if she was not a b'tch, I would suggest this to her. But when one wants good, they must do good isn't it. I am glad that your pain is going away. Why don't you juice it as well. You don't have to use a lot of sugar/or no sugar. All the best.

You can freeze anything, all you need is freezer bags. They have those bags now, where you can seal them with the gadget. We have one and it is worth every penny. Just put them in a bag, seal and freeze. My dad has gout, so cherries, cherry juice works wonders for him. I need to eat cherries myself, since my arthritis, hurts a lot.

The doctor told my dad about cherries, since it's a natural remedy for gout and arthritis. It wouldn't conflict with the other meds that he has to take for his heart.

You can freeze cherries, but you have to remove the pits first. The only way I have eaten them is fresh (I used to live in British Columbia) and canned or in pies. I suppose with the price of fruit going sky high, that picking or buying them fresh and freezing is a good idea, and if you love pies or cheesecake, you can have something for company, so here is a web site that tells how to freeze them. http://www.ehow.com/how_2081375_freeze-cherries.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art

There is a certain cherry called the acerola cheery, and that is extremely rich in vitamins..especially vit c..and minerals..its sold in health food shops in tablet form..and maybe in a drink form too im.not too sure about the drink though. We used to have a Morello cherry where we lived..and every year it was laden with fruit..but along came the birds in their hundreds lol and just devoured them!!It was like something that they had waited all year for had suddenly arrived..and it would have been awful to deprive them!!!

First things first, we have frozen citrus fruit, but not whole...never tried anything like grapes or cherries, but if you do let us know how it goes...we may want to try it someday. Second, as I am beginning to get arthritis in a couple of joints, it is good to know about cherries helping that...and if they don't, oh well, they are still good to eat.

I think you can. I don't see why not, you can freeze other fresh fruits like strawberries and melons. I would give it a trial run with a small ziploc bag of cherries first and then you will know for sure! I love fresh cherries and you are right, they are really good for you!

There is a man I know who live around here and he has gout and he eats cherries every day and he says it controls his gout. I see him buying them in the fruit market/grocery store that is open 24 hours/7 days right next door to the movie theater. I just found this online and it says you can freeze cherries with pits or without pits... http://www.cjolsoncherries.com/facts.htm
