Child well-being worsens in U.S

Percentage of underweight babies increases to highest rate in 40 years
UNICEF ranks U.S. second worst out of 33 industrialized nations for child well-being
Mississippi has the worst low-weight birth rate
18 percent of U.S. children -- 13.3 million -- were living in poverty in 2006. Well-being indicators have largely gotten better for teens, and they've gotten worse for babies.
What is going on with this? Is it just me or does this just seem so wrong?

This is why I believe in birth control programs. I don't care how lewd or immoral kids get to be so long as they do not breed kids who must live in poverty with parents ill prepared for the role. I know the Catholic Church things hard about these things, but the sin of fornication seems far less important than the suffering of children.

That is awful. I feel so sorry for alot of families that are barely making it here in the U.S. It is rediculous that alot of families do not qualify for assistance also. I think the goverment should step in for some of these families and help them out for a short time until they can get on their feet. single parents have it alot harder also. I think it is wrong for the U.S. to let some of these needy families go without. I got assistance for me and my daughter when she was first born and I was very greatful for it. I then got on my feet and have made my own life for us now.

Maybe because the kids are not getting what they are supposed to or don't understand the importance of not smoking or drinking while pregnant. They probably aren't getting the food or vitamins needed also to have a healthy baby.

This is "just plain wrong" but sadly it's not surprising, when one stops and listens to all of the crap that is going on. It's sad that it's happening, but it's even worse that I am not surprised./

This is a very tense situation, not only in America but throughout the world. America is one of the richest countries in the world and yet one gets to hear these things, which is disturbing. Imagine the plight of small children in the underdeveloped world. I have seen photos of skeletons in the name of children. It is a sad world. Yes, I do think people should be more careful in giving birth left right and centre. They must realise that they should only have as many as they can afford. There are many religions too which do not believe in contraception or abourtion. This too adds to the problems. Lets all hope and pray for a better tomorrow.
