Well this is my first year attenpting to grow brocholli and caulifloer. We bought the brocholli already growing and the cauliflower we started from seed a tad late and they have yet to pop from the ground. But lookie here, my brocholli is starting to sprout. Now I never grew it before so anyone know how soon to pick it? How big should the greens be before i pick them? Do they grow again or just one thing from each plant? I may have a green thumb but sometimes my mind is blank. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I just read that the head of the broccoli should grow to be about 4 to 6 inches in diameter atleast before picking. Late side "shoots" which I assume are the smaller pieces still attached to the root of the broccoli, should grow to only 1 or 2 inches. MMM, broccoli, what all are you planning to make.

I have never tried to grow broccoli or cauliflower either. I am not sure how soon that you would need to pick it. I guess it all depends on the size that you would prefer. I am not sure about how these veggies grow. Sorry about that. Here is a link that I found that tells about harvesting broccoli. I hope this helps. http://www.burpee.com/product/vegetables/broccoli/broccoli+green+goliath+-+1+pkt.+(300+seeds).do

Broccoli and cauliflower are actually very easy to grow. I spent three years working in a greenhouse where we started vegetable starts for farmers and these where two of the primary crops we grew along with celery and lettuce. I just hope you did not start them to late and they do not bolt and go straight to seed on you.

Sorry I can't be of much help Bob, I don't tend to eat a lot of green veggies (and if I do, they've been grown for me!). Good luck with your garden--every time my sister and I started one, the bunnies and deer would have all sorts of fun eating it!

I like broccoli better than cauliflower but will eat both. I like broccoli with cheese sauce, or broccoli and cauliflower with ranch dip. I am sure getting hungry, something about your posts do that to me. My son cooked some broccoli one time and put cheese in it and the liquid was like a cream type soup and that was oh so good. I need to see if he remembers how to do that and make more sometimes.

Ranch dip is good for both brocholli and cauliflower. I like brocholli with cheddar chees on top of a baked tater. HAPPY GARDENING FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I grew brocolli a long time ago. It didn't get the big clusters, there were lots of small clusters. I just picked it when it looked like it was ready. It tasted good. I have never grown cauliflower before. Have you came back down to earth, after that glowing head exploding discussion? That was sweet of Katesmamma to start that. Mylot sure can be fun and entertaining,

Sounds like your garden is doing good this year. I know that you don't have to go to the store for your veggies and that is really cool. I just posted to a tomato discussions and when you grow your own veggies you don't have to worry about where they were grown at. YOu already know; you grew them yourself. Have a nice one.

I guess you really don't care for peppers to tuff. That is alright; you have a garden and you don't have to buy the veggies that you grow. That saves alot; i also noticed that you added some corn too. I saw that in another post. I didn't comment to that one cause I hadn't answered this one back. So I decided to put it in one comment. Have a good one and happy growing with the garden.

Looking good! I can't help you on your specific questions because I haven't grown broccoli before either, but if no one here has the info you need, I'm sure you can search and find out. I love both broccoli and cauliflower, so I don't know why I didn't try some myself. Next year for sure!

I think it should be atleast as large as fist but I trully don't know much about those vegetables. All I can tell you Grandpa is that it will be quite tasty when it will finally grow but I can bet you already know it ^^. I had an allotment garden myself back in the old days with plenty of vegies growing. Too bad that they are going to build a bridge there now ^^.

Hi there, Due to our wonderful economy, growing home gardens is headline news on yahoo buzz. My husband and I have started a vegetable garden for the first time this summer also. (Information taken from University of Illinois extension) Cut the central head, with 5 or 6 inches of stem, after the head is fully developed, but before it begins to loosen and separate and the individual flowers start to open (show bright yellow). Removing the central head, stimulates the side shoots to develop for later picking. These side shoots grow from the axils of the lower leaves. You usually can continue to harvest broccoli for several weeks. Here's the link from Yahoo Buzz, it has additional links to information on the veggies you are growing. Hope this helps:http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/91505 p.s. This is the highest interest in backyard gardening since the 1970's

I can't answer your questions at all as this is my first time growing anything. I started my brochollo and cauliflower from seeds and they aren't doing a lot. My brocholli is starting to grow but is very small and my cauliflower isn't growing at all.

I've never attempted to grow either but I do recall back when we lived in the trailer park, there was a farmstand not too far away that my friends and I frequented on a weekly basis. We were able to pick our own broccoli after the main crop was harvested by them. They send off lots of smaller side shoots after the main head is picked that are just as good. Imagine a sunflower with a main big head and then side shoots of flowers all along the main stalk. That's how broccoli is as well, just not as tall.

Wish I could help you out GrandpaBob but I have never grown broccoli or cauliflower either. I have seen them here in the fields in Irvine ranch harvesting them and' I think its one cauliflower to a plant and maybe one 'broccoli also to a plant, but now I am sure no expert. I am still trembling from watching three firemen trying to' get a long fire truck out of a parking spot in front of'my window. I kept hearing this back up noise and got curious'so got up to watch them manuever that big truck out of a very'tight parking space. they did it and it did not take them that long also got to see my first firewoman too, lol, I know they are out'there but had never seen a female fireperson before.lol.
