Cleanup on Aisle Five! Today I dropped a jar of spaghetti sauce

at the grocery store. No one else was in that aisle and staring at the splattered mess_ I thought about walking away. I called up all the courage in me and walked to the front of the store. I found a cashier who wasn’t busy and explained my mistake. I cringed when the kid with the mop showed up and walked past me. He didn’t know I was the culprit and he mumbled something under his breath that I can’t repeat here. If you drop something in the grocery store do you walk away or do you turn yourself in?

I would turn myself in.. you must have butter fingers lately! First the coffee pot at Macys and now the spaghetti? LOL. I'm just joking with you! I think you did the right thing. Nobody likes to cleanup messes, but one of my first jobs as a teenager was a bagger at the grocery store - and that is just part of the job. If you would have let it go unseen, someone could have tripped or hurt themselves pretty badly and the store could have been seen as negligent in this aspect...so you totally did the right thing.

jashley_ I love that expression_ "so you totally did the right thing." I'm wearing a big smile right now, thanks to you. In my defense, I didn't drop the sauce and the coffee pot on the same day. I know you're teasing me. I think I'm accident prone.

I let somebody know right away. The reason is somebody could get hurt on the glass and I would feel really bad, if somebody ended up hurt because of me. The store has never had me pay for an accident.

Well good on you for admitting it! It's a simple mistake to make, and although Ihave never dropped anything int he supermarket before, I would go and tell someone. It's just the right thing to do instead of trying to pretend you didn't do it. It is also dangerous, an elderly person could miss seeing it and slip over. As for the kid with the mop...oh diddums! That's what he gets paid for! He's lucky he wasn't called to clean up vomit!

coffeeshot_ ohhh, that's a really gross thought. I don't take pride in doing the right thing, it's a personal standard I adhere to. I know you would do the same. I missed you.

Oh, it is so tempting to want to walk away isn't it? I have broken a jar of something just one time in the grocery store. I went up to a clerk and fessed up. I was treated so nicely, it worked out well. Now I have to admit I didn't see the person coming with the mop and broom though. I've seen folks walk away from breakage in the store and have gone to tell a clerk about the spill myself. I even pick up stuff off the floor someone has left there. I'm not a super neat person that I need to tidy up, but some people are pigs, plain and simple.

I know some plain and simple people too! I pick up things that fall off the shelf as best I can. But sometimes, the boxes are packed in so tight, there's no way to get it back in. You're very considerate and people conscious. The world needs people like you!

I am afraid that I would be like you and turn myself in, but then I would have to really think if I ever wanted to shop at that store again! LOL! My mother had done something even worse than that! My dad and her had stopped to fill their car. In Oregon, the attendants fill the cars not the drivers. My mother went in to go to the restroom and when she came back my dad was gone. She assumed that he was in paying for the gas. Another car was behind her car so she slipped over into the drivers side, started the engine, pulled ahead and realized that the hose was still in the gas tank and was pulled off of the gas pump! She said that she could not go into that gas station for several years! She was too embarrassed!

Oh, that sounds bad. Actually, it sounds like something I might do. I have several mistakes in mind. There's no way I would go to that gas station again! every few posts, I stick in an "I'm sorry I was gone so long. Computer problems."

I'm glad that you told that you dropped the jar. I don't think that I have ever done that but I surely would report it as quickly as possible. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis too. i was shopping with my grandson one time and had sent him off to get something I had forgotten in another isle when I slipped on some sprayed oil I wasn't hurt but because of the RA I couldn't get up. i had to call for help when my grandson finely got back to me to help me up. I was so embarrsed at not being able to get up. so it's always good to report any spills.

deebomb_ Oh, so sorry. I can imagine the embarassment. One day a woman slipped and I was standing nearby. She was elderly and sometimes they get their feelings hurt if you offer assistance. I chose to assist her. She thanked me and told me she fell on her bad hip. I knew she was in pain and embarassed, but she handled it like a true lady with grace.

I haven't dropped anything that would create a mess....but if I did, I'd turn myself in and offer to pay for it too. It would be embarassing...but I wouldn't be able to walk away.

I'll admit that I walked away once, but that was only because I hit a CARBOARD display case that held jars, that was placed in the MIDDLE of an aisle. I was riding in a motor scooter, and coudln't stop in time. It was a stupid place for them to put the danged thing, and I wasn't going to spend any more time there than I needed to. I would have reported the cussing kid to management!

I can see the catastrophe was inevitable and not a smart way to display a product. I'm sure someone heard the crash and sent an employee to investigate. I might have reported the kid, but I didn't. Maybe I'm too forgiving, but that's who I am.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! Once I was trying to get some vitamin water for my husband. They had put the cases up on a high shelf and they were stacked so that when you took one, a bunch of them fell. I managed to catch all of them but one and of course, it fell to the floor and busted open. I had to find someone and explained to them what happened. Thankfully, he was very kind and agreed with me about the placement of the cases and I helped him move them. I still felt absolutely horrible though about making the mess and couldn't believe they didn't ask me to pay for the bottle of water.

It seems the world isn't cruel in every facet of life. It's good to know compassion still exists. I'm happy you didn't get injured. I think you can let the bad memories go now. I'm certain no one in the store even remembers what happened to you.

LOL, you're really clumsy today! That's happened to me a couple of times. I park my cart to block the spill then go get one of the cones at the end of the aisle and put it on the other side of it. Then I report myself!

LOL I drop things on the floor before too. I always try and clean it up myself and tell someone. I work in retail and we hate seeing something on the floor and not being told. Yea it's annoying have to clean it up, but at least tell us before the boss see's it and start fussing at us to clean it!! There nothing like hearing a lazy boss telling you, you have to clean up something up. It's cool that you are brave enough to do it, some are not...chickens!! (:

I would tell someone that I made the mess. Unless it's something really expensive, they can't make you pay for it. Mistakes happen, and they'll just throw it in their "damaged goods" pile. I can't say that the kid was right to say whatever he did, but I will admit that sometimes you just have a bad day, and maybe his was just the same. I might have cried like Hatley said she did, but that would only be if a I had a particularly stressful day.

Yes I know that if I saw someone crying like that I Would probably try to console them. Even a smile their way and a concerned look would do some justice.

I've only done that once... well, actually my son did it when he was young. (This kid could have broken the sun if he had gotten his hands on it!) I stopped the first employee I saw and told him what had happened. It's not only the honest thing to do, but I worried that someone might come along and slip on it and possibly get hurt. I think that would always be my main concern. I wouldn't want anyone getting hurt because of something I did. So, I'd tell all, redfaced maybe, but it's better than the alternative. Of course, you could always say you "found" it like that!

mentalward_ good idea. I "found" it like that. Sorry I wasn't here to keep up with all the fun. Someone hacked into both my computers the day I posted those questions. I've got one up and running.

I've only done that once. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and at the time, my hands were really bad. I didn't have a strong grip at all. But I was still trying to do things myself instead of asking someone else to do it. I was at the grocery store and picked up a large glass jar of mayonaise. I dropped it. You wouldn't believe the sound it made! There was mayonaise and glass everywhere! I stood there to ward everyone off while my daughter went to customer service. The boy who came to clean it up was rude, too. It already embarrassed me, but by the time he finished muttering under his breath and frowning, I really felt like an idiot. I didn't go to the store for a long time after that! I got my Mom to do the shopping. I finally got over it, though. Things happen. And if it's your job to clean up spills and such, then you should just do it and not complain, I think!

Oh, I can just hear the sounds you're describing. Mayonaise is a bit messy. I feel horrible when I drop something and I have stayed away from stores after a mishap. But not for long, only until I'm sure they've taken my picture down from the office wall with the word troublemaker under it!@

Accidents happen and there's no reason to feel badly about them. It's better for everyone if tell someone immediately after dropping something, so that someone else doesn't get hurt (and the store sued). The kid who has to clean it up should not act as if he's been put out. Stockers drop and break things all the time.

You're right of course. I think I'd rather break something as a customer than a stocker!

When I was a kid I accidentally dropped two big jars of shrimp paste while trying to impress my parents that I can carry two heavy jars. I didn't turn myself in but instead, my parents paid for the two jars. And they weren't cheap. Even until now I just carry one jar just to be safe because at least I can pretty much manage it and not drop it.

I learned the same lesson. I buy plastic gallon jugs of green tea. I tried carrying two or three at a time, and I always drop one.

I will get someone who works there to have it cleaned up. I have done this alot and have found someone working to let them know about it. It's better to get someone than to walk away from it cause who know's if a little kid might try to pick up the glass or something. You did the right thing on bringing it to someone's attention.

I had dropped a big container of bleach and was so embarrassed it happened right at the checkout. I told the clerk and everyone walked away it smelled so bad you could smell it through out the store. When I got to customer service the girl was saying to someone else I can believe that idiot dropped the bleach. I just looked and said well that idiot was me and I aurely hope I am not around the day you drop something. She just looked at me and said oh I am sorry. Yes it was humiliating and I sure hope I never do it again lol
