Squirrels REALLY Scare me a lot....

Squirrels scare so bad that I feel like I am going to have a panic attack when one stops in front of me. My friends that know this about me make fun of me because of my fear. I have really tried to get over this strange fear of them but honestly I can't. I have a ton of trees on my property and they are filled with squirrels and when I go into the yard I can hear them chattering and this sound just freaks me out. Needless to say I have passed this fear on to my children and they are afraid of them too. The one day I pulled into my drive way and sat in my truck until the squirrel that was stuck to the tree at the end of my drive moved further up the tree and I was sure that I could make it to the house first. After you are done laughing at this post, would you have an ideas on how to help? Please don't say that they won't hurt me because I have heard that a billion times and that one doesn't really help much. My husband laughs and says that they won't hurt me blah blah blah but it really doesn't assure me in anyway about these little fluffy rats.

Awww. I love squirrels. Lol. But as for your fear of them...if you seriously want to get rid of it, I suggest 'Thought Field Therapy'. I found this link about it. Scroll down and read "Mary's Hydrophobia". I've had this treatment done for depression and anxiety. I think it would work for your squirrel phobia. You'd have to look for someone in your area who does it. I drove 2 hours away for mine. It was worth it. http://www.thoughtfieldtherapy.co.uk/info.html

Well, I know the link I found was from the uk, but I live in the US and I had it done here in PA. What state do you live in? Yes, It worked for my depression and anxiety. I was afraid of much more than squirrels. Lol. I was afraid to make any kind of decision. I would sit at a stop sign forever because I wasn't sure if it was the perfect time to go or not.

Oh my gosh that sounds so amazing. Did it really work for you? I have never heard of this before and I have had my middle child in therapy for years. I am going to look and see if this is available in the US. I know that we are so far behind the rest of the world but maybe it is here as well. Thank you so much for the link and information!

I love animals, but I have friends who are absolutely terrified of them, especially squirrels and chipmunks or mice... As a friend I often advise them to learn how to laugh at the culprits, and provide resources to make them do so... They often tell me that it seems to help! :) Here's the link to a guided meditation from YouTube to help you relax: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YbFE3KZF4X0 And a link to some funny articles that I have written about rodents! :) http://www.apsense.com/subject/30208.html http://www.apsense.com/article/114294.html If you learn to laugh something, I believe, you might just come to understand the fear of it out of you existance... I used to hate spiders, until I discovered that rubber ones could be used for a variety of gags! LOL! :)

It is just a suggestion and I am not sure if it will work. Maybe if you encourage yourself enough to have one squirrel as a pet, you have the opportunity to see it more, observe it more, even touch it and hold it a little bit, you will find it not that scaring, which it is really not. Have you watched Friends? Rachel is afraid of swing, so she has to get on one to get rid of her fear. Ross is afraid of spider, so he has to hold one in his own hands to get rid of his. Maybe this method works for you too. However, if you are too afraid to do so, it is OK. Everyone has his or her strange things, no big deal.

Oh yeah I forgot about that "Friends" one. I only am concerned with my fear because I am passing it on to my children although the four year old laughs and says there's nothing to be afraid of he won't hurt you mom. LOL

zephyrsun you seem to have a phobia which is no laughing matter. get yourself to a psychologist and get some help as they do help people to overcome their phobias. Your primary care doctor maybe able to point you to one, and you will be glad to be helped as really squirrels cannot hurt you but you do not believe that yet.

Thank you for your response! I hope that I can get to "know" squirrels enough that my children stop being afraid of them as well.

Not a huge rat but a little bigger and a lot furrier. I think my life would be much better if I lived where you do LOL! My friend is from Hawaii and I remember her being disappointed by squirrels because she was expecting them to be the size of mountain lions. LOL Most people in the US are not afraid of squirrels, they are smaller than a house cat, but they are pretty fast moving, they make this awful chattering sound, and they seem so skidish and unperdictable. You would probably see a squirrel and say what is wrong with that woman that she could be afraid of that thing. I honestly have no idea what the fear is all about but when I see one and it's close my heart starts beating fast. I will have to email my uncle who lives where you do and ask him what you have that is comparable to a squirrel LOL.

I think you need to try to look back at where this fear started. Did one scare you with you were a child? Was there a scarey incident at some time? Then I would tell myself this is no longer the case, that you need to cancel this out. Look at pictures of squirrels. Run your hand over the picture and tell yourself that your fear is unfounded , that you won't be afraid any longer. Go to an area where you know there are squirrels, stay there for a while, repeat to yourself that you need to over come this and that your fear is unfounded as of now. Repeat this as often as you need to. Good luck to you!

peanut - baby squirrel just chillin
I'm not sure why you have this fear, but maybe you should sit down and make a list of why you are afraid of squirrels, and then go back and look at each reason rationally. I can tell you they won't hurt you, but you've heard that one. I can say that my own experience with squirrels has been wonderful. I have 4 that hang around my house, I put peanuts out for them to eat, and have had some great photo ops of them. I have also named each on, by their characteristics. I have Max, Hotpants, Ms Piggy and the youngest is Peanut. I love watching them run and play, and come sit and eat their peanuts. They also like m &m's and peanut butter. Maybe part of your fear comes from you refering to them as 'rat's'. Good luck with your fear of them, they will not jump on you, and if anything will run away from you.

I discovered last year that they look like rats. In my area they were tearing down an old factory and it must have had rats living in it because my neighbors started asking about rats and then we had one in our yard. My dog caught it and I dropped the rat into a bucket to show my husband when he came home from work. I was looking at it and noticed how similar they appear to be. That is pretty neat how you have named them, I don't think that even if I liked squirrels I could feed them. The ones that are around my area will eat chicken. My son use to give him chicken nuggets to them. It really doesn't bother you when they sit and chatter? That noise they make is comparable to nails on a chalk board to me.

I just couldn't imagine. Did you let the squirrel in your house? I think that I couldn't be able to cope with having one even on my porch. Did it ever bite you?

My sister is not afraid of squirrels, but she swears that their is one squirrel that taunts her. She was trying to grow a bunch of stuff in containers on her deck last year and there was this one squirrel that she would always see out on the railing looking at her and she swears it laughed at her every time she saw it. It was coming on the deck and stealing her tomatoes.

LOL I have often wondered when I see them in my garden if they are eating my plants. I haven't actually seen them do that though. My middle child use to love squirrels and he would feed them his McDonald's chicken nuggets. I didn't know that they would eat meat but the ones that were by our house at that time did.

Did you work in Concord, Ca.? At A Daycare? I had a lady with same phobia and walked her to her car a few times as Squirrels looked at her while playing in the tree's and or the streets. They don't hurt any body......
