Just call me "Bish"

In a bid to return to "normal" life, I have decided to volunteer my services for a few hours a week to anyone that will have me. Where I live we have a volunteer centre where you can go and register your name. They then put you in touch with organisations that are looking for volunteers. However, they couldn't see me today, but gave me a leaflet and directed me to their website. I found the site and started to look at "jobs", one of which was to work as a guide at our local ancient and historic City's Anglican Cathedral. Eventually I decided to sign up for the site so that I could apply for jobs. I did all that was necessary and then pressed the "Apply" button. It seemed the obvious one to click. I thought that this was a just a register of my details. But it now appears that I have signed up to join the Cathedral's voluntary staff. Not bad for a non-religious believer. Have you ever signed up for something unexpected?

Sounds to me like they could have used you better in the office, helping others to sign up for volunteering.. If they were too busy to see you today then it is apparent that they need more help with signing up volunteers.. But you will be doing something worthwhile and it will get you a star or two in your crown, which we all need.. Good going for you, hope you enjoy it.. My husband and I are trying to find something to volunteer for but are having a hard time fitting everything together, he has bad circulation problems in his legs and can't stand nor walk for long, so that limits us in a way, but we will keep trying and will eventually find something..

I did think that she was a tad offhand actually. I wonder how many people that they have turning up saying the they want to volunteer. Maybe hundreds, but I doubt it somehow. Good luck with your own hunting. I need to build some confidence back up and it seems a good way of doing it.

My discussions are a mask Donna. In real life I am very quiet, shy and retiring. It's too long a story to tell, but I was always very outgoing but I was ill 18 months ago and I have lost a lot of self confidence. But I am getting better. My current fear is who will employ someone that has been sick for so long. That's the problem with neurotics. We're never happy unless we are fretting about something. Procrastination I think it's called. I have it bad!

Judging from all of your discussions, I think that you have enough confidence now.. But do what you will to make yourself a better person and all the while helping others.. Good for you..

I guess in a cathedral guide, a love of history is what the punters will be looking for rather than a love of God! If you can talk as well as you can write, you'd make an excellent guide
But if you're serious about volunteering with anyone who'll have you, I'LL HAVE YOU !!!!!
We accommodate volunteers who come here on working holidays. Gorgeous weather
, chickens to play with ... what more could you ask for?

Thank you. I can certainly talk! Working Holiday - isn't that a contradiction in terms. You must live in another country if your weather is "gorgeous". LOL. Right now mine is distinctly blowy and about to rain too. But chickens. If I can live in the hen house I might be happy for a while...........

A break somewhere new, doing something you're not used to? That's a holiday in my book
And if you want to come and lodge in my chicken house in sunny Portugal, then I'm sure they'll be glad of the company. I even cleaned it this morning. It's got all mod cons you know.

I have never signed up for anything like you, but I have found my inbox full of unexpected newsletters and tips and such and other sites. It is always good to comb over everything and read fine print otherwise we won't know what we sign up for..maybe a monk next? I am sure if explained they will let you resign your volunteer work and do as you wanted.

Oh I needed a giggle tonight and just reading this has given me one especially as I suggested a bit of voluntary work ages ago in another discussion. I am sure you will love the Cathedral building and its architecture, if it is any consolation I don't go to church anymore, long story, but I do actually clean my local one for free as I am more able bodied and felt sorry for the little old lady that used to take about two hours just to hoover whereas I can whizz round in about half that time! 'Normal' whats normal? LOL oh we have had that discussion too from you I believe. Way to go. Ellie :D

Thanks Ellie. I've decided to take you advice and that of others too and do something. I was thinking a bit of driving or trustee work. But if Cathedral Guide is what it is, then that's what I shall do it. I shall have to work on my voice projection though. I agree about "normal" though. But I'll leave that one for now.

Well id not have gone down that path myself, maybe they will ask you to learn all the history of the place and recite prayers to the visitors. If it was me id have gone to a charity shop in the hope that id have ound a pot worth a few million in one of the boxes. But you never no you may get a lectern out in your coat pocket if you fold it carefully.

I don't think I've ever accidentally signed up to do something I didn't want to do. I did end up volunteering at a certain company and have not idea how it happened, one minute I was talking to the manager, next minute I was volunteering there!
Volunteering is a wonderful experience and I'd recommend it to anyone!

LOL It could only happen to you sweetheart!
I think the only time I have signed up for something unexpected is when I joined this wonderful community we call mylot - I signed up for something that might occupy a little of my time and ended up addicted to a place where i have many friends , laugh a lot, get and give support and have made some of the nicest, most wonderful and craziest friends I could ever have wished for! xxx

LOL...I can't believe you did that. I guess a volunteer is a volunteer and it's the thought that counts.
I haven't really signed up for something unexpected other than my marriage. That wasn't what I thought it was going to be at all. LOL
Other than that, I read the fine print as to avoid getting into something unexpected. That might explain why I have never been married again. Hmmmmm? Skinny Psychology?

ROFL........
!
A fish in Church! What a concept! At least you'll be perfect for the Easter celebrations!
Frankly, becoming Mayor over the MEN on the Town Council was pretty unexpected! LOL Being the only female and a 'newbie' to boot, it all rather 'floored' me! ROFL

Yep!
Actually, there's a really good story behind how I charmed the men at a Town Council Meeting and found myself put up for Mayor. I should post it. The townies really really disliked the previous one and laughed themselves silly at what I did to him. I'll see if I can find it again and I'll post it. Thanks for the thought.

That's the best thing you could do; There is nothing worthly to fight for this days; and oil isn't. That doesn't means civil rights and other things that affect your way of living. There are so many wars going on around the world already, plus disasters and many other problems, for anyone to start something else.

Now after i reread it i had to go lay down and cry cause i thought you were finally going to volunteer yourself to me..instead you are going to give yourself to a bunch of Angelic people and i bet they are related to the virgin mary..oh woes is me.....

Not up to now but may have possibly joined internet things and then forgotten.
At least your cathedral will be worth showing people round, not like the two near us. One in ruins and one a 'modern' monstrosity. Good luck with your venture, just talk about the architecture and forget the religion.
