Is there an appliance you simply refuse to ever own?

With me, it's a dishwasher! I've never wanted one. I think stacking and unstacking them takes longer than actually standing at the sink washing dishes by hand - and from what I've seen, they don't do a very good job - not to mention the water and electricity used! Also, I enjoy having my hands in lovely hot soapy water in winter time ... and it's good thinking time as well. Is there any modern day household appliance you refuse to have in your house?

Sorry i just seen this old discussion but had to agree with you since i love doing dishes by hand..its my time to meditate and know whats going on outside by looking out the window at the world.. My first house had 2 dishwashers and i sold them both in a yardsale..having children and not spoling them is good too..they now do like me and wash by hand..

It's certainly a great opportunity to think and plan, Rosekitty (with nobody interrupting you!) When we had our kitchen redone many years ago, one of our daughters said we'd find it hard to sell if we didn't include a dishwasher. I said, 'tough luck'! I've often had to pick bits of dried food off my MIL's plates after she's used the dishwasher - at least when you do them by hand you know you've got everything!

Same here. I have never owned a dishwasher and will never own one. A few years ago, I worked part time in a cafe. The cafe uses a dishwasher to wash their plates. That was my first time using a dishwasher. Initially, I was very excited about using it. After a few attempts, I found using a dishwasher more cumbersome and time consuming than hand washing. To me, time is precious, I rather save time and use my hands to wash.

Exactly! All the time spent stacking and unpacking ... they can keep it!

What's a dishwasher? the only ones I have seen are the manual ones, usually controlled by me, i.e. I am the dishwasher LOL! I wouldn't mind one actually but it's not really worth getting one unless you have a large family is it? For me the appliance that I would refuse to ever own is believe it or not a microwave! Does that sound strange? I absolutely hate them! The food doesn't taste right and I think it's an artificial way of cooking, I have never got on with them either using them or eating the food or drink that been in them, I just don't feel comfortable with them, when I moved into my own place that was one thing that wouldn't get past the door LOL! Nasty things!

Manual dishwashers are MUCH nicer, wolfie! I saw on the telly the other night they were recalling a heap of dishwashers because of a fault in the control panel causing house fires - THAT certainly wouldn't happen if a husband did it instead! Sadly, my husband remains rubber-glove free ...

Hmmmm. I realize this discussion was posted 6 months ago guybrush but I was compelled by it nonetheless! A dishwasher is perfectly fine for me to own but I am not too concerned if I don't have one either. I can't think of any appliance off the top of my head that I have never owned and never will; but I can tell you what appliance I hope to never buy again! Juicers! I have owned around 3 or 4 of these bad boys and each and every time I get suckered in and then dismayed for the very same reasons. Let me try to provide you with a re-enactment of sorts..... Mmmmmmmm fresh juice! I can make my own fresh juice! Wow! How HEALTHY am I gonna be! ..... What? I have to CLEAN it now?? How?? With what??? Why is this crap not coming out of those little holes like it says it does in the commercials?? I AM rinsing it under the tap like they did and that crap is still there..... What's this little brush for?? Why are the bristles too damn big for the little holes?? And so the juicer is relegated to the cupboard to join his little juicer friends in appliance hell..... Never again. (Oh, I'll get suckered in and buy another one one day. You watch.)

Hahahaha - I truly understand the juicer problem! I too started with happy expectations of health and heartiness as I gaily shoved apples and carrots down its 'convenient, large shute'! But sadly, it was the metal filtery thing that finally thwarted me - all that scrubbing with the little brush, and STILL finding pulpy stuff sticking to it after thinking it was clean - grrrr! It was also alarming to see how much wastage there was in the 'pulp holder'. All that, just for a couple of glasses of juice! (I bet when they bring out a new, shiny model next year we'll be queuing up to get our hands on it!)

I'm also with you on the dishwasher. I find just doing up my dishes every night after eating or before bed takes me around 10 minutes, then I can let them air-dry and put them away before I do the next load. My roommate keeps arguing with me saying he wants to get one because it would save so much time, but honestly, for the dishes he wants the dishwasher to wash (cooking pots and baking sheets), you'd really have to do those by hand anyway since they either, a) Don't fit, or b) Don't get clean enough. If I have a dishwasher I get complacent and lazy with my kitchen, so I don't care if I never have one. And you're right -- they don't do a very good job. I end up handwashing every glass I use at my parent's place because their dishwasher seems to leave residue or gunk inside them. So not worth it.

Totally agree, Bree! My MIL's plates and cutlery always seem to have horrible things stuck on them (from the dishwasher) - it's far easier to wash them by hand and make sure you've cleaned them properly!

haha =D same here.. I have tried using a dish washer when i was working in a cafe, and at 1st i tot it was fun, because i have not used it b4.. lol But after using for sometime, i agree that it's fast in the washing, but it's not really clean.. Other than the stacking and unstacking takes time, draining out the water and filling it with new water also takes time, plus, if we were to just anyhow put in those dirty plates to wash, it may choke up the whole drainage system too, and the whole tray underneath the dishwasher will be so dirty and smelly too.. hehe PLus, if one din stack the plates properly, there's a high risk of breaking them during the washing process in the washer..

I am with you, when I bought my house there was a dishwasher, I got rid of it and put drawers in the space, I hate them, no need unless you have a big family I think...and even then it is good therapy for kids to do dishes...

I would have gotten rid of it too, lilaclady! The drawers would be much more useful to me - and I agree everyone should help with dishwashing if you have a big family! You can have lots of good discussions while you are all together washing dishes in the kitchen - much nicer than turning on the dishwasher and all going out to sit in front of the television in silence!

I've never own a dishwasher either...LOL. It's not like I really have that many dishes to wash anyway, since it's just me living alone now...oh, and of course keeping my kitties dishes clean. And if you want to hear something funny. Another item I was never interested in having was a microwave...then last year a friend of mine actually gave me one...have I used it? Nope, not yet

We used to manage fine without all those gadgets, Pye ... so don't go selling out on us and using that microwave - hahaha! (I actually use mine for cooking rice - it does a great job of that - and my husband and son heat things in it.)

I use to wash dishes by hand because I did not have a dishwasher but am much happier with one. It makes things easier with less work.

Unlike you I have a dishwasher but it doesn't work, it just fits in the gap where there is plumbing for one and someone gave me it. I nver used it up intil about Christmas this year when I found it excellent for the bulk load of dishes but don't mind doing by hand either. I am not a coffee drinker so for me it would be one of those super dooper coffee making machines I suppose, followed closly by and elctric can opener. Ellie :D

I'm glad you got at least one use out of your dishwasher, ellie ... and though I agree with you on the electric can opener, I do love my coffee machine! My kitchen cupboards are actually full of gadgets which I hardly use ... especially those toasted sandwich making thingies, when I find it much nicer to make them in a frypan where I can squish them down and turn them when I want to!

For me its a garbage disposal. I've had them, and hate them. They seize up, they cause pipes to back up - don't EVER put pasta down one I learned that hard way. They also smell. UGH. I'll stick to tossing scraps in the trash can. I also don't care for diswashers anymore. It seemed in the past I was always either pre-washing or having to wash things overwith afterwards. But I can't live without the dryer like others here. I live in a very dusty area with lots of sand and crawly things. Trust me, you don't want your clothes hanging on a line here. Not only will they be covered in grit, but you might have a large furry spider on them when you take them down.

Erk - the mind boggles as to what happens when you put pasta down the garbage disposal! I certainly understand your problem with the dust and sand on the washing ... that would make it impossible to hang it out. I wouldn't mind the big, furry spiders, but it wouldn't be nice to have grit in your knickers!

I live alone and eat my food uncooked (fresh raw fruits, vegetables, a few nuts) so I don't use many dishes to even need a dishwasher. I would never want to have a microwave, not that I need one, but I don't think it's very healthy to use one.

It sounds as if you have a lovely, healthy diet, 1hopefulman. I don't think dishwashers are very hygienic, either - I'm sure there's lots of bacteria caught up in all those bits and pieces - and they smell!
