I want some light summer reading, but not fluff. I just want to be able to read while my son is playing at a park and not have to start the paragraph over everytime I look up at him. I particullarly love character driven plots. Any and all genres and suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Love to read. Can't seem to get enough. But with a little one who keeps me busy most of the day, I do not read near as often as I would like to. The last book I read was "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert.

I can't suggest anything but Stephen King novels and novellas. I am a HUGE Stephen King fan, and read everything he writes. I also love it when they turn a book of his into a movie, although the movies are rarely exactly like the book. (Ah, Hollywood!) They are rather spooky, though. You really have to like the outlandish style of his in order to appreciate his writings. Sorry I couldn't suggest more.

Hi, mentalward. Thanks for responding. Do you have a favorite Stephen King?

If you're starting out on Stephen King, I would recommend The Talisman. It's cowritten by King and someone else, but it will give you a taste of what's to come. It's more of a fantasy book, though, so you might not like it if you don't like fantasy.

Favorite? Oh, man! Let me think a sec... It might be Dolores Claiborne. But then, It is one of my favorites as well as The Tommyknockers. Then, there is always The Dark Half and The Langoliers. It's so hard to choose my favorite because I loved almost every single one of them.

I like Janette Oke's books. There are several series, the most well know is her "Love Comes Softly" series - you may have seen movies based on these books on the Hallmark Channel. They are stories of early pioneer life and also address the Christian background and beliefs of the characters and who they guide their lives.

My mother and father devour that author's series. They talk about them all the time. I can't believe I've never read one.

I have 2 suggestions for you: Callgirl - Confessions of a Double Life by Jeannette Angell and Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. Both are true stories and fantastic reads...not sure if you would class them as "light" reading as you can get pretty engrossed but give them a try...I loved them!

I loved reading Memoirs of a Geisha. I'll try the other one. That is exactly the type thing I'm looking for.

I find that when I need reading like that I either read things like Reader's Digest, short stories, or magazines. Another idea is to get some books on CD and bring a portable CD player. I can get all the books in the stores on CD. I find them on Amazon, Ebay, in used book stores or ones my cousin gives me. Great for when you need your eyes peeled on something or someone.

Hi, If you liked the Stephanie Plum novels you may enjoy books by Katie MacAlister. Her Aisling Grey series, "Holy Smokes, Light My Fire, etc.", is fun as well as any of her books. She has a strange sense of humor which makes the books fun to read. Enjoy your summer.

I read alot of short story books. My favorite one was "girls night out". I thought it was good. It had about 20 short stories in it and I liked it because I could finish one story in a night. I have a hard time completing whole books, but short stories i can get a way with.

Usually the library (atleast the ones in our area) have the short story books seperate from the regular books. You can pick out the ones you like the best. I picked up 3 more short story books last week from the libary. One is called "beach" and the other "pool side". They are short stories about beaches and summer time. The 3rd one I can't recall the name right now, but it looked really appealing.

If you like real and true stories about one's life then I highly recommend "Steve and Me" by Terri Irwin. I just finished reading it and it's wonderful!! I really enjoyed that book!! Another one is the "Chicken Soup" books such as the one I'm reading now "Chicken Soup for the cat and dog lovers soul" for I love animals but there are all kinds of different titles to choose from such as "Chicken Soup for the Mothers soul"

Well then, I guess 'The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book' by Jane Roberts is out of the question. Shelter for the Spirit by Victoria Moran would be good for sitting in the park while your child plays because there is no plot... you can just about open it up anywhere and read something that is inspirational and fun.

I don't know what kind of books you like to read but my favorite 'lite' reading material are mysteries, and my favorite mysteries are the China Bayles series by Susan Wittig Albert. http://www.abouthyme.com/China/ abouthyme.com: Susan Wittig Albert I also really loved her Beatrix Potter series. http://www.cottagetales.com/books/index.shtml The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter by Susan Wittig Albert

PS: And of course magazines would be perfect too. Lots of pictures to look at, hehehe, and articles that don't require your full attention, but yet are not boring.
