Would you quit your job, if you never got a raise or promotion?

If you never got a raise in income on your job, or promotion, would you quit? Or, suffer in silence? Currently, I'm working from home, so whenever I want a raise in income, I just have to work a little harder. But if I were working outside the home, then promotions and raises would be a big deal for me. I can't imagine that I would want to stay at the same job if they never gave me recognition. It just wouldn't seem worth it. What about you?

You know that working from home you are responsible for yourself, and to yourself. It is your motivation, and if you are not progressing, you only have yourself to look to. In the public domain, we need good words, pay increases, new titles, and respect in order to be satisfied with the job. There has to be some external motivation.

It's the truth! I worry when my spouse says he doesn't need a promotion. Then he tells me that his supervisor gets the same pay that he does, but does twice the work. That doesn't sound like much of a promotion! I wonder why some people put up with that.

I am cureently working at home. However if I am working in a certain company I would certainly want to raise my income or promote me. If the company can't avail it and if I can't find any other job, I will definitely stay. It is better to stay in a company who can afford you less rather than to have no job at all.

I would not want to stay at a job in which I could not get ahead. If people are not going to pay me wha I'm worth, and promote me to jobs for whih I may later become qualiied, then I don't see the point o sticking around/.

I have changed jobs in the past do to this. Years ago I worked at Walmart. They never did make me full time. I worked There for around 4 years. There were people that were getting hired and getting moved around me. I got tired of them doing this so I found another job and left them it was in St. Augustine but it was a full time job.

I'm happy that you were able to find something better. A woman really does have to look out for her own best interests.

Yeah I sure did I was feed up with them by the time I did leave. I have heard people say that Walmart is a great place to work for. Well I totally have to disagree with them.

Hello dear beauty queen. It is a very good discussion to begin with. This is also what I have been thinking about in the past two years. Well, I have been working in the same school for eleven years so far, but my boss is not generous at all. I am not complaining about my boss, but because he and his wife never mention about giving us teachers a rise positively unless we ask to. I came to work in my present school in the year of 1997 and after three years I decided to leave for another school in another city close to the sea, the name of the city is Wenzhou, in the south of Zhejiang Province, a very rich city in China, and I had already fixed my job there with a higher salary. I made this decision just after we had the first school meeting before the autumn or fall semester on August 26th, 2000. Because my workload was less than I used to have, which would affect my salary. I didn't say anything but started to make a call to see if teachers were needed in another school that I preferred. Happily and luckily enough, I was accepted after being interviewed for half an hour when I reached the school for the interview. The guy in charge of the interview told me that there were altogether eight competitive applicants for the same teaching job and that I was accepted as I was more competitive than the rest and asked me to go to have their first school meeting the next day. I promised to come back to their school in a day or two as it was far from my school and I needed to go back to take my luggage. When I got back to my school, I didn't know that my boss was looking for me everywhere. I told my boss that I would leave the school and start to work for another one. At first, I didn't say anything about my complaint of not having got my salary raised, but reduced actually with the workload reduced. I just said that I would like to work in my hometown. But he and his wife begged me to stay. Then I had to tell them about my dissatisfaction and the reason why I wanted to leave. After that, I was given a rise and got promoted as the group leader of the teaching group as I used to in my previous public school where I had worked. Another three years passed, that was 2003, still they didn't mention about the rise of my salary. This time I talked to my lady boss, who is actually the boss in charge of finance of the school. I got a rise. Now it is five years since I got a negative rise. You know, the price for everything has been getting higher and higher, but still not a single word of offering us a rise from my boss. I am right now thinking about this matter, whether to ask for a rise or not. I have good reasons to ask for a rise based on my contribution to and excellent working performance for the school. Right now I am at a loss about this. But I think that I will have a try to see what my boss will say. It seems that we have to fight for a rise each time. Many of the teachers are leaving for companies or other schools and will not stay for another year because of this. I hope that my boss will think about my asking for a rise once I talk to them or to be exact, to my boss's wife, my lady boss. I don't feel good if I always have to ask for a rise, but the problem is that they will give you a rise unless you ask for. Sighing and shaking my head. Anyway I hope to be lucky if I open my mouth for the rise. Thank you so much for the discussion that I have made a lengthy response in the hope that it won't bore you, my dear beauty queen. Enjoy your life and work.

Quoted, "maybe they are hoping that everyone will be happy with their current jobs at the current pay." Answer: they do think so. They always think that all the teachers are happy with the pay they offer us, but it is not like that because everything nowadays is on the rise. That is why so many teachers have made a decision to leave for a better-paid job. Right now I am still thinking about whether to ask or not. I will have to wait another week before I ask for it and will have to think about it carefully. In fact, I love my school, but I worry that I will be turned down or they won't be happy with me if I do so. thinking thinking and thinking carefully about it... If I have made any progress, I would be happy to let you know about it. You are a trustworthy beauty queen. Thanks so much.

It's so wonderful that you would trust me enough to confide all these serious matters. Often I have wondered why some employers are not straight forward to make an offer of raise or promotion. It could be so simple as they have not thought about offering a raise. Or, maybe they are hoping that everyone will be happy with their current jobs at the current pay. Either way, the situation does sound intolerable. I do not know your bosses personally, so I am not assigning them bad motives. You sound like a very proficient and competent teacher and they are most lucky to have you. As you say, prices are going up for everything. You do deserve to be paid what you are worth. I am sure you will get your raise when you ask for it, as your employers know what a valuable person and employee you are. Best of luck, my friend! Be well. Let me know how it works out.

why should i suffer at the work place too. i think if we have talent, skill, andthe performing better than anyone else, persistence, yearning then we need not suffer at the work place at all. everyone has enough problems in thier life to put themselves to sufferage. instead of suffering we can better take up a job elsewhere and perform well and command respect and earn image and offcourse income too. i will never suffer at workplace. cos i have worth.

I would be very discouraged if I never received a raise or promotion in a job. Being discouraged is not a state I would operate well in, so I believe I would be forced to look for a new job. Thankfully I have never been in that position and I hope I never will be.

First of all, I think it's great that you can work from home and control your income. I think you have the best position of all. For some of us though, that's not an option. I do have a job (part-time), but since I am part of a union, we have a contract that has to be negotiated regularly so I am pretty much guaranteed a raise. However, I would have to think very hard before I would quit any job. If I truly loved what I was doing, then maybe I wouldn't leave so quickly, but above all else, my children come first and my job has to fit their schedule so that is how I decide where and when I work.

That's good! I do appreciate your point of view about working around your children's needs. Parents do have the added responsibility of accomodating the family activities. Thanks for bringing up those points. Very valid. And much appreciated.

I would definitely quit specially If the company promises a raise after 6 months or so. Never let people took your hardships for granted. If you know your worth then you should know what job and pay really suits you.

I would stay in the job until I found another job that I'd enjoy more & know there was more room for me to get a promotion
@Elixiress (3878)

It all depends on what my other options were. If I could get a promotion if I moved to another company then I would go to that company, but I would not quit my job completely without a back-up plan as I would be left with no income. If I was in a job and was there a few years and I had not had a promotion or anything then I would look around for a job that offered me a higher position / wage, get that job and then leave my current job. I would not leave myself jobless.

That's a good point. Don't leave yourself without funds. I guess if a job had other perks like benefits, health insurance, retirement package, stocks, etc., or good working environment then those things might make up for a lack of promotions. For some people, I mean.

I guess it would depend on the job, and I'd have to know certain things ahead of time. If it were a job I really wanted and knew that I would never get a raise or promotion, and took it anyways, then I should not expect the raise or promotion. However if upon taking the job they say that there are opportunities for advancement and I never recieved them, I would probably begin looking elsewhere.

I am writing from India... The situation is different here.. India is like a labour market.. you can get any type of labour at cheap prices.. so it is diff to get a job here... So its better to suffer a bit rather that being unemployed....

O.K...good question. It would depend on the job. I have a job that I love and would stay there with or without a raise at this point in my life. If I were in a job that I really didn't like, I would quit at my first opportunity.

For me I have been with my present job for quite sometime. I started as clerk and I was promoted to different higher positions. I should have transferred a long time ago for a greener jobs but i stayed. So far I am doing well, although I am not receiving big salary compared to other in the same position. But I should have looked for another job before. For new workers, I suggest that as a starter be in your present job for at least two years before you transfer to another one. Transfering every six months or earlier will make you not a good catch, as later you will again be transferring. The two years time you can train better and your experiences will count.

When I was working for a lumber yard as an office clerk, for 17 years at the same job, and the years I never got a raise, I stayed with the company. I always mentioned to my boss that I never received a raise for too long and then we would discuss it and come to some kind of settlement. I usually ended up getting a raise but never what I thought I should have received. And I always waited about 2 years before I would ask for one because I was too intimidated to ask sooner. I know work for myself and so if I want a raise I have to raise my prices for house cleaning and I can't do that very often because then I would be out of the price range for that service. So now I only get a raise about every 4 years unless I get more clients and then that is more money but also more work.

Well i guess it depends on the type of job and pay. If i was a boss, or a bosses helper, i wouldn't mind not getting a promotion - that applies for a good salary as well. I would leave it if it has a bad pay, or if i really hate it.

Hello beautyquen, hope you are doing good. Well my decision would depend on my financial situation. Like if am happy with my work and enjoying work without any financial problems then i would continue working. In case if i had financial problems, then i would have worked more harder as am doing now. Happy Mylotting!
