Me, my wife, and dads venture tonight

Well I have had a few friends request an update on my dad. For those new to knowing me I am my fathers caregiver. He is 84 with heart problems and has been living with me for nearly 5 years now. At his Dr appointments a few weeks ago things looked good. He had and EKG, normal, blood tests all showed things working fine. No change in his meds either. Anyhow he does not do much of anything. Well tonight my wife and I thought about going to a movie to get away from dad for a few hours. But then I though, hey he needs some exercise. So instead of asking dad, I told him, he is going to Bingo with us. So later this evening we are all going to Bingo. He needs to be out in public. Now I've got to shave his face and clean him up possibly. Dad is all done with home physical therapy and does do some exercises daily. I push him hard and make him sytroll outside to walk up and down the driveway. So he is up and about each day. Thanks all. Have a great day/evening as well.

A lot of grown children do not feel that way, i know because i took care of their parents for years at the long term care facility where i worked and a lot of them didn't even bother coming to see them. I always enjoy seeing parents taken care of at home as long as possible. And making sure he gets out is wonderful.

He hates it though. He had siad no 3 times. Then the 4th time I smiled saying, "Dad you are going to Bingo tonight and there will ne no questions." He nodded with a shrug of his shoulders. But after a few minutes he seemed okay with the idea.

I bet your dad will enjoy Bingo, Grandpa Bob. Glad his therapy is done and I bet he is as well. Also happy to hear you are getting him out and walking even if it's just in the driveway. Some exercise is better than none and the fresh air will do him good. Good luck with Bingo. Hope you guys win.

We won. (tiny amount) I started a discussion about it as well. I was waiting on the $1,000 coverall for 5 numbers and never got it though. That sucked bigtime.

Least you won. I never won when I used to go to bingo with a friend of mine. I tend to get all but one of the numbers fairly quick but that last one eludes me every time.

Now that sounds like fun. I haven't been to bingo in a long time myself. I sure hope that all of the family have a great time. Better keep an eye on your dad or next time you and your wife go out you might be having to double date and chaperone your dad.
I do admire you for what you are doing to help your dad out and your wife is a real trooper too. I am sure your job is hard taking care of him but at least he is not pushed off into some home and forgotten.

Glad to hear that your dad is doing well.
I applaud your wife as well for being there to help take care of him. Families need each other.
My husband would not be that receptive to taking in a relative. My son, had to stay with us for awhile, he complained complained and complained. As you can guess there was a lot of tension in the house.
I'm sure your dad really appreciates you. We all will eventually get up in age, and may need someone to look after us.
May God continue to bless you and your family.

She just fixes him breakfast each day. She works all day long 6 days a week. So I am the one doing mostly everything. Thanks also. I think my daughter would care for me but my son, I highly doubt hre's do it. he only calls or comes around when he needs something or to show off a new car etc. Thanks again as well.

Yes, you do need to get dad out occasionally to the public, but remember that you and your wife need those times alone as well. Hope you have lots of fun as well.

Thanks GRANDPA for updating us about your Dad...at least it sounds like your Dad is willing to get out....It really would be important for his frame of mind to be with other people for awhile rather than being cooped up at home all the time. I tried being firm with my mother during the last year or so of her life, but nothing doing...she wouldn't have any of it...even her doctors and social worker would encourage her to get "active" again, but to no avail, and since I wanted to keep some semblance of peace and quiet, never forced her...she had a god awful explosive temper...so I kept my mouth shut.

He didn't want to go. After asking a few times I just told him he had no choice, he was going with us and he nodded. But after winning a little bit he is glad he went. he asked about going again soon this week. Just him and I will if we go during the week. Well sorry that ya had a hard time with your mom. I won't take chit from dad actually and he knows it. HAHAHA! I stand firm always with him.

It's wonderful that you care so much
for your father and take such good
care of him.
You're right, he does need to be out
around other people. He may not talk much
about wanting to be out, but I am sure
he enjoys it!
Be well.
Blessings for your family.
Have a lovely Sunday.

I try my best to get him out and doing things. But he is so lazy that he would rather just sit and do his word search puzzles or watch his gameshow TV programs.

Its very rare these days to find children who care for their parents the way you are doing. I am really glad he has you and your wife to fall back upon. We all tend to forget that we too shall grow old sometimes, so setting up this example for our kids is a must. I do hope dad keeps well and yes, do take him out for outing is the best therapy. I do hope you win at the Bingos .

hi Grandpa Bob well I can say one thing about myself, I do
not yet have heart trouble although I am a diabetic and have
'been since I was fifty. I am now 81,will be82 come nov 15 of
this year. I live with my son in a two bedroom apartment and cook
for myself. I broke my shoulder in a bad fall two years ago and had to have shoulder joint replacement, and a lot of physical
theraphy so I do know about that part of it for sure. did your dad enjoy his bingo night out? bet he did, I know I would have.I stillhave to laugh when this visting nurse was all aghast when I
told her I cooked for myself. I wanted to say since my son is at work all day and I am not mrs rockerfeller I have to cook for myself. Why do p;eople always assume if you are in your eighties you are senile and just plain helpless? its far from the truth.

Poeple have that misconception that once a person is "elderly" they can't do for themselves. I have seen people in their 40's that could not and I have seen some in their 90's that could and refused help from family as they could live on their own. It's human nature to think the eldery are as helpless as a child is. Dad had fun. In fact he is the one that Bingoed. I just yelled Bingo for him as usual. HAHAHA! But we spilt any winnings 3 ways as we always do.

What, no report of anyone having a big win?
Or maybe you're out spending it all?
That's so nice to hear how you take care of your Dad. I know I need someone to push me to do things too, and I'm not quite to 84 yet. Do you walk with him on his jaunt up and down the drive, or do you just push him out the door to fend for himself?

Not even leaving yet. It starts at 7 p.m. CDT. So a couple hours before we leave even. HAHAHA! I walk with him when I get him to the driveway. I shove him out the door, then throw his cane and say, "Hurry up old man." HAHAHA! He needs help on the steps is all. Otherwise he walks half way decently. I do stand behind him in case he needs a hand on his back for support. I just tell him, "If you fall please fall forward as I don't want to be crushed by your weight." HAHAHA! Thanks.

I'm glad your dad is doing so well. I think getting out does help them mentally as well as physically. I'm fortunate that my mother loves to go but sometimes its a bit excessive especially with gas so high. Sometimes we just get in a she wants to go out again.

Wow, I admire that Grandpa B! Great to know he is doing great also! You will be an inspiration of every one here about that love to your dad! I always admire people who have that heart for the parents especially this time, that some of the children are not close to their parents!

It is so nice of Grandpa Bob to take good care of your father. I am sure that he enjoys a lot of his life to be together with you and your wife. You are so considerate as to have him do some exercise every day. It is good to him and thoughtful of you. Happy posting, dear Grandpa Bob.
