Does burning candles effect your health?

I was invited to a bbq recently. Since it began to rain we all went inside. The host went around lighting these beautiful candles but as they burned I could tell they were paraffin and I began to get nauseous. I love the smell of beeswax or soy but other candles make me feel ill. Also if they have artificial scents it is bothersome. What candles do you use? Do things like that bother you? xoxoxoxoxoxo

I'm not sure if burning candles affects our health or not. I burn them in my home every day. I also use a candle warmer and it just heats the parifin up. I don't even have to light it. I usually use the Yankee Candles. they smell the best and I have not noticed anything harmful about them yet.

Wow it must have contain various scents that confused your senses. There are candles that really lull you to sleep. I think they are using aromatherapy candles. It is said that it could help your bidy from being cured by certain diseases. How effective or true it is I do not know what it really do. I just read it somewhere else about this and haven't tried it myself.

I don't think they are bad, but perhaps the scent can make you feel bad/ill. Perhaps it's an allergy. Did you find anything out about it? I have heard some people say they don't like candles either because it makes them sick. Have a nice day. Pablo

It's funny... I used to light candles all the time, but now can't be bothered. Unless the power goes out, of course.

Candles dont bother me but sometimes if I am at somebodies house and they have scented candles the scent will bother me. Not everything necessarily smells that good and if there are a variety of scents it can sometimes be kind of sickeningly sweet.

Hi Radene, I always burn natural beeswax candles if I can as I have found in the past that some of the cheaper ones can make me a bit headachey. Also one of my friends who suffers from asthma can't have insence sticks burned around her. Ellie :D

I have neer had a problem with burning candles affecting my health. I don't really like the scentd candles, as I find them way too strong for me, but I like the regular non-scented candles. I think they look absolutely wonderful when they are burning.

It might not be the ingredient of the candle itself making you sick but the wick....did you know most wicks of most candles are made of Lead? And that of course can lead to Lead poisoning. Whether it's gone through or not, but I doubt it, there is suppose to be a ban of lead wicks. Problem is, is that candles that one may find in dollar stores, in other words the cheapie ones, probably still have lead wicks Here's an article about lead wicks http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml01/01083.html

raydene I sometimes get to feeling sick too after being around parafin candles that are burning. I used to use beeswax candles' and never had that problem. also I seem to be allergic to some 'of these air fresheners like airwick with their artificial 'odors. I get all stuffed up and my throat itches and I feel 'as if I need to get out and breathe some fresh air. I never'se any of these in my home myself. the scents are just toxic to mysystem.
