I haven't use a sewing machine since the 6th grade. But I bought a working machine for 50 cents at a garage sale, and now that I am in the ranks of the unemployed, I have some extra time on my hands. I downloaded the user manual of the machine, and have bought some thread. I plan on taking a bunch of old t-shirts and turning them into a blanket of some sort. I also need to sew some patches on my husband's pants. If anyone out there sews, any words of wisdom to a novice just getting started?

I have not really used a sewing machine since I was in the 7th grade, years ago. I use a needle and thread to sew though. I really don't do a whole lot of sewing. I usually don't have the time to. I do stitch things up on occasion if it is something I really would like to fix or mend. Good luck on your sewing.

I often mend things by hand. It seems no use to pull out a machine just to mend a hole or sew on a new button. But I'd like to do projects. I have a friend that makes her own curtains, and another with an embroidery business. I'd love to be able to make things for around the house.

Gee 50 cents, that was a bargain, I have never been good at machine sewing, I am better with hand sewing, you know there is an op shop near my place and it is a rather up market op shop and the lady who runs that cuts old pairs of jeans up and makes patchwork tote bags, they look pretty impressive, she sells them for about $25, I bought two one year for christmas presents, she even uses the pockets on some...there is an idea for you...

The machine actually works, it's a bit dirty, but for 50 cents! Sheesh! THe lady at the sewing store tried to sell me an embroidery machine for $9000!!! OH MY GOD! I could buy a greenhouse for that kind of money! Anyhow, IF I get the hang of it, I might be able to get creative and make things out of old clothes and sell them, and maybe have a cute little side business. It depends on how creative I am, and if I have any skill.
