1. Muffins. Eating a muffin on your way to work may seem like a healthy breakfast, but most store-bought versions are simply cake in disguise. A Starbucks Blueberry Muffin contains 430 calories, an Au Bon Pain Corn Muffin has 530, and a Dunkin' Donuts Chocolate-Chip Muffin packs a whopping 630.
The bottom line: If you eat one of these three times a week, you could gain one to two pounds a month.
2. Cinnamon rolls. These sweet, sticky treats are favorites in shopping malls and airports across the country. But a regular habit could be enough to declare war on your waistline. A classic Cinnabon Roll, for example, tips the scales at a staggering 730 calories.
The bottom line: If you frequent the food court for one each week, prepare to gain an extra 10 pounds a year.
3. Onion rings. How bad could onions be? Well, it's the batter, the breading, and the deep-frying that make this crispy side order so diet-deadly. Jack in the Box's version has 500 calories, while Nathan's Famous Onion Rings weighs in at 745.
The bottom line: Eating one order of onion rings a week could translate to an annual weight gain of seven to 10 pounds.
4. Nachos. Fast-food nachos are usually one of the most fattening choices on the hors d'oeuvres menu. Taco Bell's Mucho Grande Nachos boasts 1320 calories, while On the Border's Stacked Border Nachos contains a mind-boggling 2,740.
The bottom line: With these kinds of calories, you could gain one-third to two-thirds of a pound in a single sitting.
5. Buffalo wings. These sports-bar staples are coated in butter and hot sauce, deep-fried to a crisp, then slathered in blue-cheese dressing. Is it any surprise that they can instantly undo virtually any diet? Denny's Buffalo Wings have 974 calories per plate, while Ruby Tuesday's popular appetizer boasts a whopping 1,090.
The bottom line: Indulging in just once plateful a month is all it takes to pack on four extra pounds per year.
6. Cheese fries. As if classic French fries weren't fattening enough, these cheese-smothered versions are positively calorific. One of the worst offenders is Outback Steakhouse's Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing, which contains a stratospheric 2,900 calories.
The bottom line: This appetizer can pack on the pounds almost overnight. In fact, you're almost guaranteed to gain an extra three-quarters of a pound every time you eat one.
7. Chicken pot pie. Once you look at the nutritional label, this classic comfort food seems anything but soothing. Pepperidge Farm's Chunky Chicken Parmesan Premium Pot Pie contains 520 calories, while Kentucky Fried Chicken's version packs 770.
The bottom line: Eat this diet-buster once a week, and you could weigh seven to 10 pounds more this time next year.
8. Carrot cake. It's hard to believe that only one slice of anything could undermine an otherwise healthy eater, but with carrot cake, it's almost guaranteed. A slice from Denny's contains 799 calories, while the Whole Foods version has 830.
The bottom line: Is this decadent dessert really worth the caloric cost? Just a slice a week could cause you to gain one pound a month.
9. Milkshakes. These beverages may seem benign, but don't be fooled: Milkshakes often contain more calories than banana splits or hot-fudge sundaes. A large Strawberry Milkshake from Dairy Queen contains 980 calories, while a Jack in the Box Chocolate Malted Crunch version has 1,310.
The bottom line: Sip at your own risk: Just two a week could make you gain two to three pounds every month.
Oh my gosh! Is that incredible? Scary, too! We eat more than we realize sometimes! I used to eat pot pies every week! I've been watching my weight for almost a year now, so most of these I don't even see anymore.

Thanks for posting this. Thankfully, there's nothing on that list that I actually consume on any regular basis. However, there are lots of people who do. It's nice to know that you can substitute just about any favorite high-fat, and/or high-sugar item with a substitute. For instance, I love muffins and Weight Watchers (which I'm currently on) has some great low-fat substitute muffins to satisfy that craving. You can have a substitute for anything from pot pies to milk shakes on Weight Watchers. Like they always say, it's not a diet, it's living.

Please stop. I'm full just reading your horror story. Please pass the GAS X!!!! It's pretty bad out there. I work in retail and the store has a McDonalds there and I watch some of the stuff people eat there and I'm so glad I stay away from the fast foods. It's a shame when you see the size of some of the children sitting there with their rather large parents. I can't see why these places are allowed to sell this poison. Doesn't the government care that our population is getting larger and larger from these places? I guess they figure we should make our own choices when it comes top our diets.

Your discussion points out why I gained thirty pounds almost instantly after meeting my current husband.
He loved to take me out to eat, so he could have me all to himself. Rather quickly there was more of me to have. I am playing a game right now. We are trying to see how many days we can go without eating anything out. Not even a snack.
Trying to save calories and money both. It has been a full week since we have gone out to eat. We are both good cooks,no need for all of those wonderful comforting calories.Of all of these the onion rings and the milkshakes are the most tempting to me. Of course, when I have a shake, it is small and it substitutes for a meal.

Now that is really depressing. What am going to eat then if I cannot eat these foods without gaining a lot of extra pounds? LOL I know these foods are bad but I really love my milkshakes.

That must be why I do not indulge in any of these as I
am a diabetic and most of those would shoot my blood'sugar clear up to the roof. lol. anyway I am already overweight so do
not need to indulge in these trap foods.for one thing any dessert type thing you get in a cafe is loaded with sugar and fat and salt. all diet busters for sure. Every time I have indulged in a pot pie I have had my blood glucose shoot up to 300 which makes me feel really ill. not worth it,my friends,
not worth it at all.

none of the things are surprising to me, everyone already knows they are fattening, that is if they haven't been living under a rock.

Yeap... as I have said earlier I have a site coming out with all the nutritional data of all the fast food chains.
One thing to remember to keep yourself out of trouble (or in less trouble) is DO NOT supersize (notice McDonalds doesn't even use that anymore?) or go for a large or whatever.
Want a burger? Fine. Single burger no cheese or mayo with lettuce tomato ketchup and mustard.
Fries. That's fine. Make it a small fry for me.
Coke. Try Coke Zero... tastes EXACTLY like the real thing and is 0 calories. Even better get unsweetened iced tea.
Ice Cream? Sure... many places have frozen yogurt that is over 95% fat free (but high in sugar). A small vanilla for me please.
We as Americans just eat too much. Period. My wife and I will go to a 'real' restaurant and order one entree and then split it (sometimes they charge you like $5 to do this but it's still worth it). 9 out of 10 times that is enough food for the two of us and instead of a $50 bill we get out at around $20-$25 (entree & tip)... we drink water.
I'll have to write a post about saving money while eating out... you can literally save up to 70%... incredible... and go away feeling satisfied!
Great post
Thanks
Zelo

The only bran muffin I love are the small kinds. The one in the fast food are usually too large for me, and I do not like onion rings that much (tried to make them myself, and they were not that great) I do love sundaes, and I like angel food and sponge cakes better than regular cakes.
I guess when we go anywhere, we will stop at all the Subways and Tim Hortons. At least they give you a healthy choice and I am not that fond of hamnburgers. But I do love tacos, mostly the corn tacos stuffed with ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, grated cheese, and salsa.
And who in their right mind would put cheese on fries and add ranch dressing?

Esterlou, you just took all the fun out of my life!
The Pepperidge Farm pot pie at 520 calories isn't bad, I try to keep my calories for a meal around 500 calories when I'm on my diet/watching my weight. Alas, we no longer have aDairy Queen and we've never had a Jack in the Box.
Counting calories can really help a person be more informed and keep bad choices out (I was just kidding about the first line I wrote). I often go somewhere and ask what they have for 300 calories, esp. if I'm going to drink milk or orange juice so I can stay under the 500 calories for that meal. I'm sure you really helped someone not gain a pound a week today, thanks and take care.

My problem with pot pies is, they are just too good and I always wanted a second one! What a way to pack on calories! No more for me! LOL

I've never thought they were that good. Maybe because my Mother used to make some incredible chicken and douplings with carrots and any veggies we could get that were 10xs better.

I'm so glad you posted this. My hubby was diagnosed with diabetes II about 3 years ago and he was supposed to lose about 120+ pounds. His doc put him on a 1500 calorie a day diet - which he's never followed. He does not seem to get how many calories are in foods, especially fast foods. I've told him that if he's craving a Taco Bell steak taco, he shouldn't that he should go ahead and have one because that will keep him from binging on something else later. But...instead of coming home with one taco, he'll have 3 or 4 plus a shake and nachos. That's not going to do it!

Hey !! Good job with all this information . I know I was shocked when I went to get a muffin at sheets , and saw it was 600 calories . No thank you there !! I love carrot cake , but that is crazy !! I like cheese fries with bacon , and ranch , but only sometimes. I had no idea they were that high !! That is crazy . I suppose all good things are . I am watching so for sometime now I will stick to fruit, yogurt, and wheat snacks . Anyway, they just make me feel so much better . Most times when I eat junk it just makes me feel so ick !
Ps: chicken wings I lernt the hard way with them . I was on a low carb diet and that is all i would eat most days . I would have 12 myself , the garlic ones . Crazy that was a pound there !
