what makes them purr?

i looked through and didnt see anything on this but what exactly causes the purrrrrring noise? i have always wondered

Actually, I don't think anyone knows. There's various theories as to the mechanism involved (vibration of the larynx, for one), but none of them have ever been conclusively proved. I have always wondered that myself...But it's so relaxing to sit back and hear them purr...sometimes when my cat does it, I fall asleep lol.
