three month old baby locked in a car for a half hour.

A mother accidentally locked her baby in her car. The keys were left in the car, she frantically called 911 and asked for the police to help her, the operator told her that the police do not do that, call a tow truck, she repeated over and and over again that her baby was locked in the car, they didn't listen. This happened here in Quebec. The woman was interviewed on TV, she had to have her neigbours rescue her, they pulled out the air conditioning in her window to get into the house to find the extra set of car keys and house keys. The woman said she couldn't understand, every time a cat is stuck in a tree the firemen come out or the police to bring it down when eventually it would come down itself, yet they could not rescue a baby that could have died in a car with the four windows closed in the heat. Of course the police say they will look into to it, what else would they say. I think this is absolutely unacceptable what do you think?

hi winterose I think that the operater is the one to blame as she did not notify the police and hemmed and hawed and did nothing to help the mom get her baby out of the car. if she had had aaa they would have been there immediately and rescued the child. I dont understand either why the operator did not notifuy the police,I think she was the culprit. but perhaps the mom should have tried her neighbors first. She must have had her house keys onthe same ring with the locked in car keys, I think its wise to have a spare set of keys hidden somewhere where a person could get to them in an emergency like that.Another thouoght comes to my mind, asa mom of a grown adult son why on earth did she not take the baby out first, then it would have been just a locked car instead of a danger to her child?

the door accidentally locked, she was not trying to get out, she was trying to lock door on the baby side of the car when her side with the keys in the ignition accidentally locked on her. The woman is in a state of panic, the first thing you think of is call 911 that is what they are there for, she may not have known her neighbours and had to go knocking on doors, they baby was locked in the car for an a hour hour screaming that is how long it took for the neighbours to be able to help get back into her own home.

Thankfully she had the presence of mind to get the neighbor to help, and that they would, bless their hearts.

That is horrible! I know that when I had my daycare back home in AR every single one of my kids' parents managed to either lock themselves out of thier car or lock the kid in the car all in one week. It was an icy week too. It was crazy but the police were kind enough to come out all 3 times.

I totally agree with you. I mean that little baby should have been there top of there list to go rescue. That is awful. Yet like you said they will go and rescue a cat out of a tree. I am glad this lady's neighbors helped rescue her little baby.

yes the child's welfare should have to top of the list of priorities and normally it is, I just don't know what went wrong.

Unacceptable to say the very least!!!This woman got treated as bad as I did when I fell and dislocated my elbow being it happened just outside the hospital I called the hospital and explain my situation. The way she bellered at me "Why phone me" You'd think I had called a dounut shop or something. Common sense is a thing of the past.

That is really something that the police didn't come and help the lady. Yet they would have been the ones to come and arrest her had someone else seen that she left her child in the car. Funny, they could have told her to call the fire department to see if they would have came out to help her. That would have been the right thing to do. But I can't believe that they said something like that to here. I'm glad that her neighbors were home, to help her.

the police have emergency service for that, so they say, and even if they didn't the dispatcher should have known to call the fire department, not tell her to get a tow truck.

That truly is shameful of the police! Maybe she should have called to report a child endangerment and the cops would have been johnny on the spot! The cops better look into this! At least look into the operator.

I guess she figured saying my baby is trapped in the car several times would make any person with half a brain realize what she is talking about.

that is really unacceptable... a police should provide service to the community and the woman is so right when she says that even the fireman and police come to the rescue when an animal is stuck on a tree... this is a human's life... a baby... which is much more precious than an animal's life... i don't understand why they can be so ignorant and don't care when the woman make the phone call... the operator who received the phone had to be investigated and receive the proper punishment for negligence... i don't think that the operator should act in such a way and be so unhelpful... take care and have a nice day...

they claim the have no record of the call but that is ridiculous they have to have a record of it. The police will find away of getting out of the responsibility some way.

I think the police have to change their ways or there will be a tragic accident. And worse of all, the police will lose the lawsuit that would follow.

the operator never passed the call onto the police, she is the one that should be fired.

No she/he was just following the procedure the police want her/him to follow.I think the chief should be docked a week's pay. All the operators should be re trained. and the person or persons who thought of this " brilliant"idea should be fired.

I can't believe they refuse to help, wow!It was good that she spread the news on media so that those policemen will also realize what is their fault about it and will never refuse any caller, when people call them of course, they are serious and desperate to be helped! Great to know that the baby was saved and lesson also for everyone to always have a duplicate and place it in a very visible area in case of emergency! Thanks for sharing this news winterose!

yes I hope they never did that again, I don't know how she could have had her keys anywhere else, the first set got locked in the car where the door locked by accident, and the second set was in her home, where her door was locked because she left the house and so her house keys were in her purse locked in the car.

I think this totally unacceptable also. A three month old baby locked in a car with all the windows closed. I be if it had been a stranger rather than the mother ringing to say they have seen a small baby locked on its own in the car they would have come soon enough then and prosecuted the mother for cruelty. I sincerely do hope that they look into and fire the operator as this could have resulted in the baby dying had she not got help. Ellie :D

An operator should have compassion and understanding for each different call. I know some aren't an emergency but in this case it was and should have been dealt with as so. Grrrrr I get so annoyed at peoples action or in this case inaction sometimes. Ellie :D

Why are you blaming the police? The 911 system isn't run by the police department. It is an agency that routes all emergency calls to the right place, be it police, fire department, hospital, etc. If the 911 operator didn't turn it over to the police, why are you blaming them? 911 operators are trained to screen calls and deal with true emergencies. If the woman had extra keys in her house right there, then she should have broken a window or whatever it took to get in and get the keys. It shouldn't have been that difficult, and to put it off on someone else doesn't work for me. I made the mistake of locking my infant son in my car in Japan many years ago. I didn't live on the military base and I had no phone, so went next door and had a neighbor help me break into my car. It probably took us 30 min or so and he survived the ordeal just fine, much better than I did.

1- the operator did not know if the woman had extra keys or not and didn't ask, the woman was not capable of pulling out an air conditioner in the window by herself, at the time of the call she did not know that neighbours would help 2- the operator told her the police do not do that, so who else are you going to blame, with a statement like that. 3- only after it got on the news did the police respond and said yes they do have emergency services for that kind of thing, and now they will investigate

I guess my point is that I don't see the event as an absolute emergency. The child was not in immediate danger and she didn't try to do anything else on her own before making a call. She freaked out, and expected people to jump when she did.

Wonderful that the police are investigating! I do hope that once they're done with their investigation, they recommend the termination of that 911 operator for not doing her job. What nonsense she said when saying that "the police do not do that!" To not put an emergency call about a baby trapped in a car through to the Police Department was just pure laziness on the operators part. Hopefully her laziness and incompetence will cost her the job; a 911 operator such as that should definitely get into a different line of work! Btw Ldyjarhead, nobody here was blaming the Police. Instead, we're blaming that 911 operator for being incompetent by not putting the mother's call through to the Police Department. Also, I disagree with you about the 911 operator... that operator did not know whether or not the mother had extra keys in her house so she should have immediately put the call through to the Police Department instead of saying such an asine thing! The mother's phone call was an 'emergency' call that was not screened properly by the 911 operator. It wasn't a matter of putting the rescue of her baby off on somebody else; the mother panicked and called the first people she knows can dispatch help -- the 911 system. That 911 operator should be fired from her job for not transferring the mother's call to the police. Simple as that.

Hi winterrose, That is really insane that they didn't help her.I think if thats me i will brake the window already i am too sfraid that my baby suffocated w/ no time. And then i will complain why they doent help me and why the policemen cannot do things like that. They even show that if the dog being stuck and they are coming to help the dog come out safely. What do they think about the baby.Hummm thats strange mybe the person she call in 911 is new or doesnt care about it.Yes that is deffinitely unacceptable Rose they doesnt have any reason not to help her. But anyway good that her neighbor helped her and the baby is safe..She should make a complain so this things is never happen again to some other people. What they are going to do let say the baby die..Nice discussion! have a nice day..Take care your self.. Greetings from Che!

No doubt winterrose, it is absolutely unacceptable. Wonder why in the world they wouldn't help her? Well thank goodness her neighbors came to her rescue. It's so scarey to think what could have happened to this baby. It doesn't take long for the heat to build up in a car on a hot day. I'm so glad she had some nice neighbors who would help.

Had it been me I would have found the nearest large object and broken the window far away from my child. No way would my baby sit locked in a car for an hour. It takes time for police to respond even when they do. What was wrong with this woman that she didn't rescue her child immediately? For the price of a window? Maybe the police were wrong but the responsibility was in the mother's hands..no one take responsibility for their actions anymore! Honey I know if that was you young son in that car you would have gotten him out long before the police could arrive! xoxoxoxoxo

That is just unacceptable behaviour on the part of the police. They are suppose to be there to serve and to protect the people. The citizens pay their wages and yet they won't help a small child? I hope that someone gets written up and time off without pay over this.
