... I caught you outside of my window! These are definitely ruby throated hummingbirds, common in the eastern U.S. I was able to snatch several more photos, and you can clearly see the ruby throat on the male in the photo on the right.

hi Ldyjarhead I have seen one I always thought was female but since your photos here, I now know she is a he, and he is defintely a ruby throated hummingbird, and its so odd as I live in Southern california. He comes around the hawthorne bushes when they are in bloom and whirs his wings and sip nectar like crazy, and he seems to live in our large garden apartment complex as I see him almost every day. He is so pretty with his ruby throat, I saw him this one windy day and he was having trouble flying as the wind was really gusting, but the little guy did endure. I saw him a few days later again sipping nectar from the hibiscus bushes blooms outside my apartment. love the little guy so much.

Wow, that is surprising since they are known to breed mostly east of the Mississippi. And yep, the male is the more colorful, as in most species of birds. The female tends to be just a bit larger, and with white on the tip of her tail.

I wonder if what you're seeing is Anna's Hummingbird? Check out the pictures here: http://www.hummingbirds.net/annas.html

Thats Amazing! At first I thought it was a thread of Jeff Foxworthy jokes, and thought "Great, more bad jokes being posted on the internet." But you got me. Happy MyLotting, Luke

You are really lucky, you are attracting all of the birds. These used to be around my grandma's house in southeastern Oklahoma. They liked her mimosa trees and the lantana she planted under them. What a cute little red neck.

There certainly is a lot of wildlife around here and yes, I'm lucky to be in the middle of it. I've never been much of a bird person as in wanting to keep one for a pet, but these guys sure do fascinate me.

After they get used to youfeeding them, you can start sitting outside with them. We have some folks near here that have about 200 of the little buggers on their farm every year (They participate in Audobon Society research too) and they get so used to human contact that as long as you don't go crazy or move too fast they'll visit you while you sit outside. The noise of the camere shutter still scares them off though :(

My husband smokes on the back porch and sees them all the time. I positioned the feeder so that I can see them outside my window here and he can see them too. I sat outside on the step earlier today which is just about two feet from the feeder and they came and went several times, but didn't stick around long. I did get one of the pictures during that time, though.

Excellent! Very well done! I think that it's very hard to take pictures of hummingbirds. These pictures are very nice! I just recently started getting bird feeders and it is so much fun to watch the birds. The only thing I need to get now is a hummingbird feeder.

My dad has some of those, they're so beautiful! There are none in my yard, do you think it's too late to get a feeder or have they already established their feeding locations?

That's hard to say. You can buy a cheap feeder for $2-3 in the dollar-type stores, so give it a shot. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they're not in the area. I've written an article about attracting hummingbirds. I wish Associated Content would get caught up so it could be published!
