To understand why this is so exciting, I have to take you back a bit over 3 years ago. My parents' neighbors had an old pop-up camper for sale for $200. It was in decent shape for it's age, they dropped the price to $100 for me, so I hand over the money and stared making plans. We repainted the inside, built a new table, put in newer (used) countertops. It was looking really nice...then a tree fell on it.
One end was essentially broken off. The soft sides on that end were torn up and the mechanism that makes it "pop-up" was damaged. It still opens and closes but it's really hard and a second person has to manually push up on the one corner.
It was going to cost $900 just to replace the soft sides...because of it's age I couldn't find anywhere selling just the pieces for that end so I had to buy all new for all the way around...which was NOT going to happen! If I had $900 to spend it would go for something a little more important. I looked for used ones but most were already torn beyond repair like mine were.
So here we are, 3 years later and I was faced with fixing it or scrapping it for money. I discussed it with my older kids first since they actually did most of the work on it when we first bought it...and they gave up their swingset fund to get it. None of them wanted to get rid of it...no matter how many times I explained I didn't want to either but I knew I couldn't afford to fix it.
But, typical mom, I had to figure out a way to fix it because I just couldn't break their hearts by getting rid of it. So...I finished pulling of the smashed end, I started ripping off the ruined soft sides...and that's when it happened! I discovered that the roof section is completely intact and the exact same size as the opening left after removing the damaged end. So I will lose a small double sized bed but I'm going to reattach the soft roof section to the lower edge of the opening and put tie straps along both edges to create the new corners. It might look like half a pop-up with an entire end missing but it will still sleep 5 comfortably...more if we squish. It will be good enough for now anyway and I just have to pay the registration fees and it'll be ready to go!
Hoefully I can get a few days away by the end of the month!

Wow foxy! Good for you! Glad to hear that you'll get to go camping again soon and it's awesome that you found a way to fix your pop up, (although personally I like ruffing it and therefore prefer tents myself).
I love camping, in fact we just went camping for the 4th of July weekend! We went with a friend and he uses a camper trailer. I think camping is fun, no matter how you do it!
Anyways, I reckon that's all the rambling I have on this subject at the moment. Take care and have a lovely night!

LOL...well considering my pop up comes with a sink, two lights, and the beds, we won't exactly have many luxeries! I'll probably tuck the kids potty chair in there somewhere for the little ones and we'll be cooking over the campfire til I can buy a little grill.

Hopefully it's first use will be in time for a double surprise birthday party for two of the older kids. S/o looked at me like I'd lost my mind lol when I came running in last night rambling about how I figured it out. He just scratched his head and reminded me he knows nothing about these things but told me to go ahead with whatever because he was sure I knew what I was talking about even if he didn't!

Cheap campers aren't easy to find that's for sure! After the tree fell on this one I spent some time looking for a replacement...the only ones I found were in really rough shape or way out of my budget...insurance didn't cover mine because it happened on my parents' property.

You sound like me, you can get very creative when you have too. lol Sounds like it will be great and a memory the kids will never forget, hope you take pictures has you fix it up. We love camping, but we still use our tent, we have plenty of room for the two of us, our tall (well taller lol) air matteress and the dog. We usually go camping 4 or 5 times during the summer. It's nice just to get away like that. He has thought about getting a pop-up camper, but for now we are comfortable with our tent.
Happy camping!

I'm hoping it works out perfectly because if I can get it ready to go around my birthday it will be right in between two of the older kid's birthday. I have it all planned out it my head that I'll get the camper set up and decorated and have them come up for a surprise birthday party there...I haven't told them I'm actually fixing it yet. They just think I'm still figuring out what to do.
I would be fine with just a tent if it was just me but I have no idea what I'd do with the kids trapped in a tent all day if it rained! We have a bit more room in the pop up...it was a 27 footer including both ends, now it's probably a 21-22 footer.

LOL...it's been so long, I don't even know where we'll go. Probably one of the little campgrounds close by. I figure if I go during the week and park somewhat close to a bathroom facility we should be fine.

Good going for you.. We can make do if we have to.. You are so very smart to have fixed it in the way that you did.. I would stay away from trees from now on.. Hope you log many fun hours in the camper..
