Does discussing on mylot improve your English?

I think writing or speaking a foreign language often is the key to get better at it, not just writing stuff for yourself but actual interaction.
On mylot you have this form of interaction, even though it's purely written it would help you to improve your skills on paper and on boards. This is also because you can talk on so many different subjects and I find most people on here that are native speakers very helpfull in getting better at spelling and grammar and getting through what you want to add to the discussion.
I've learned a new thing today called 'blowing raspberries', I had no idea what it was. It's making a funny sound on your baby's tummy; I was formiliar with the concept but had no idea that it was called that in English. This proves to me being active helps me learn new words and keep me active with a language I would otherwise not write or speak daily.
How about you?

Participating in some quality discussions, reading quality responses, understanding some crispy and juicy remarks, counter-comments and sub comments definitely help one improve one's English. I have learnt a lot since I joined mylot and each day I treat as a learning day here on mylot and I certainly feel that I have improved my language, since I started here.
Good post!

Thanks for the compliment on my post, I find it rather difficult to come up with good topics that haven't been started yet and this is one of the first that actually is a pretty good one if I may say so myself. I came up with it because I realized mylot has improved my English and I was curious about what other people had to say about this. Have a great day!

English is my language so it does not affect MEE. But posting and discussing on myLot does help my typing skills.
I do think you are absolutely right that myLot can be a platform to learn a better understanding of English since not only are you writing it but in order to get replies that makes you money you have to write well so that others can understand you, thus opening lines of communication.
I have seen several on here that do not try very hard but you seem to write and understand English very well. If you have learned from here on myLot I give you praise (kudos) as you are one that takes the opprotunity given to you to make the best of it!
Thank you for the great topic and HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Thank you so much for your very descriptive response :)
I haven't just learned English from mylot, I had English in school to start out with and I fell in love with the language there. I must have been about 10 years of age at that time. Since then I have had english penpals, I had a best friend who's mom was english and I would talk english there, I had a bilingual toddler who I babyset and so on. I've also been active on boards for a couple of years now, but yet, mylot and other boards have helped me to perfect it along the way.
I feel bad that not everyone is putting effort in writing better English on mylot. If you are here just to make money that's ok but at least put your back into it and try to make yourself clear. I try to stay away from topics that seem to be put up by people who are not trying. If I see people struggling that do try I allways try to help by typing a descriptive response and giving tips.
Mylot also surely has improved my typing skills! I can now type blindly and pretty fast and can make about 15 good responses per hour, I like to make them long and descriptive so they actually add something. Otherwise it's just trying to reach a lot of responses per hour...
Thanks and have a great day!

Thank you for the response and I am glad that it is comming along well for you.
Your point about not responsing is the reason that I mentioned writting well to get responses. When someone obvously does not care to even try to learn the language should not be on an English site, the same as I would not go onto a German site as I do not want to learn the language, I do not care how much they might pay, but if I was to go there because of the income I would atleast put an effert into trying to learn the language. That is also the same as a telemarketer since the US exports alot of telemarketing jobs to foriegn countries. I think that there should be a screening for understandability with such jobs. Once when I called Charter Communications (a US company)I had to go through four service reps before I could understand someone, they tried to speak english but it was so broken that I could not understand it. I finally got someone I could understand, not completely understand but enough to take care of the issues at hand.
It also upsets MEE when people write a little bit just to get that extra post in as to truely add something to the discussion is key in this type of community. Or another thing is all of the "What color is your hair?" type of discussions. There is a big difference between those that truely want to contribute and those looking for the quick penny.
Once again thank you for the response and have a great day!!!

I don't practice my writing skill after I finish my last school. So writing and responding in forums actually kept up my English standards. I can't say that my English has improve a lot but it became easier when writing something out right from my brain to my finger tips.

Thank you for your response, I guess it's a great way to keep your skills up to date even if you don't learn a lot of new words. After you finish school most of us don't speak or write a foreign language on a daily basis anymore. Mylot is one of the ways to keep active in another language, and that's why I love it.
Have a great day!

I agree that it also helps seeing things from different point of fews and develope a good attitude. It also is helpfull as sometimes you get reactions of people that have no other perspective but their own and you have to try and convince them (in a friendly manner) that you are entitled to your own opinion and they are too and that this isn't a challenge to see how many people you can get convinced of your own perspective. Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Well since this is an internet community I always look up words I am not sure on the spelling. I don't she why it couldn't help your english but to many people use abbreviations like "lol" or "imo" and they also drop of endings of words like jumpin' instead of jumping but if you use proper english I don't see why it couldn't help to improve.

That's true, I must admit I use abbreviations too but my posts aren't crowded with them and I make pretty long responses most of the time. I also will only use an abbreviation if I know what they mean; there are people out there that seem to copy them without even actually knowing what they are writing.
But I do have to agree writing full sentences without abbreviating words works a lot faster if you want to learn a language well. Thanks for your point of view!

Here it I do also certainly get a change to improve my English even though I do make certain mistakes too.

That's not a problem, we all make mistakes and that's only human.
We can all learn from each other and make friends around the globe. It's nice to see certain people responding to a lot of your discussions, for example people that think alike or that you can have a good discussion with or who have the same interests. These are the people I would add to my friendlist. Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Thank you for your response, I think you are right about the ability to learn from mylot. There are a lot of up to date discussions about subjects in the news too.
Sometimes there are discussions on topics from the news I wouldn't have seen otherwise, and people put links online to newspapers or newsarchives. Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't thought about that yet :) Have a great day!

I agree with discussion in mylot will improve my English.
I'm a Chinese, actually my English not very good, so I have to learn more. I will learn faster if I speak everyday.
Through mylot I also learnt a lot. Certain vocabulary or words, I can learn frrom mylot by reading the posts. Then sometimes when I reading the posts I found mylotters have made some mistakes :D , I can learn from there too.

That's great, I'm happy to hear that mylot has helped improve your English. I guess for people from China it's even harder learning a foreign language as you have your own alfabet and own letters/signs which makes it even harder as you not only learn new words but a complete new way of writing. I admire you for being able to learn that, congrats!

I think the last I scratched my head to write was in college ,way back, In my later part of the year writing gradually was replaced by cell phones.Any message was easily passed on .
so I have never wrote so extensively before even though my knowledge of english is limited. I think mylot should start discussions in native languages then we can write in the language we are comfortable in.

I surely think it does, however, if you are talking about how it improves your language I would've suspected to see capitals and less messenger talk in your message... perhaps you hadn't thought that through before you posted ;)
Thanks for adding to the discussion!
