why are people so careless that handbags are left on library tables?

a discussion I just read triggered my thoughts on this,.as 'a worker in our local library I noticed a lot of women leave their handbags on the tables while they look for books. one lady complained to me that her handbag was missing and she had left it right there on the table. I asked her why' she did that as it was unsafe, she said, well all you nice people would surely watch it for me? I beg your pardon, I am busy shelving books and yet I am supposed to watch your handbag.? another example is in the grocery store.women leave their handbags in their carts while they shop; they sometimes go around the other side of an shelving unit and cannot even see if someone takes it. my questions are do you mylotters really think this is wise? if so why, and if not why?

well i do not leave my handbag in public places because it is not very safe to do so..here we always have boards put up that be careful of your baggages and pickpocketers..so that is about it..i think i am responsible for my stuff and i cannot expect the world to look after my things for me..

I will never do that! I always have with me my purse even if I have no money on it..LOL! I can't lose it since almost all important Ids are there...We don't know everyone in the place so we have to be extra careful and we can't expect other people to be watching our things, how sure are they if someone will pick it up and those are not the owner..LOL! Very shallow thinking!

hi checapricorn yes indeed even when I worked in the library I could sometimes get an idea of who belonged to what at the tables close to where I was shelving yet people come in then leave and someone else takes their place so I still did not always know for sure. so no I cou ld not keep an eye on their things.]

oneyr later hi Grandpa Bob trying to comment back on my older discussions.I still see people leaving persons on tables in the library and in grocery carts in my favorite grocery store. What gets me is leaving a child alone even for a few minutes. one time a woman did try to steal a child only the child was smart enough to cry out mommie, bad lady momie bad lady and the security officer caught the woman before she cou ld get out of the store.

I had to giggle at what the lady said to you regarding watching her bag. I don't leave my bag anywhere period, and always take it with me, even in the library. I may leave my library bag on the chair which is usually empty or has library books in them but not my handbag.

hi maddysmommy yes they expect us to always know which is their stuff and who belongs to who, and we just did not have the time to do all that.OUr job was to shelve books not babysit their belongings. i have seen men go to the restrooms and leave laptops on tables. that is just crying for theft.

No, of course its not wise. We should be careful with our belongings and don't just assume that other people around us will look after it. I mean, you'll never know really...

hi donsky14 you have a good point there , I imagine some people have watched someone else steal a handbag and know darned well it did not belong to the robber, but did not say a word,or try to stop the thief either.

This world isn't a safe place. If they leave their wallets somewhere, someone will took it. And the worst is that people don't understand that your job isn't be looking for handbags. It's also sad that people steal at any chance they get, when some of them don't actually need it.

Of course it is unwise hatley and I am as guilty of it as the next person. What I do in the shopping cart is use the child safty harness and belt it in, at least if a person tried to nabb it they would run into resistance and give me a chance to hit them over the head with the nearest object. I think in a setting such as a library we tend to think that it is safe. I mean do thieves honestly come into a nice quiet library to read?

Angelwhispers yes they do, sadly and yes you would think in a library people would be different but no purses and handbags do come up missing and the thief usually walks out of the library and nobody know he or she has just stolen a handbag. we call the police and they search but seldom can track down the thief.

I'm afraid I'm somewhat guilty of this... not to the extent you mentioned but I do leave my bag and trolley while I backtrack in an aisle. I don't leave it too far and it is not in plain sight because I dump my carry bags and bread on top of it. I realise I'm far too trusting but I also feel that the area where I live is relatively crime free.

MsTickle I was also guilty of that until one year at thanksgiving time I had a whole cart full of food and left my purse to turn around and talk to someone, and whamo a woman was going off with my purse and my food, so I yelled for a clerk and we stopped her. she kept saying the purse and groceries were hers,so I grabbed the purse, and showed the clerk my atm card with my photo on it, he called security and the police and they arrested this woman on the spot for attempted robbery as I had close to one hundred dollars in my purse.

This is just the reason why I quit carrying a purse. I was forever leaving it on tables, counters, shelves, you name it. I can't count the number of purses I've lost and had to replace. I just finally got to the point that all I carry is my checkbook. And it never leaves my hand or pocket. These days, leaving your purse lying around places, is just asking for trouble. hi twoey68 that is the reason I always carry a shoulder bagand keep my fingers tightly on it too.that way I cannot lose it or have it stolen. I almost lose it and a cart of grocerys once when I left my bag in the cart along with thanksgiving foods and had to get a security guard to stop the woman who claimed it was all hers. my atm card with my photo on it showed the security guard that the purse and food did belong to me.

That is strange! Hi Patsie. Over here, I find that the ladies are quite careful with their handbags. They tend to lug them along everywhere, even if they have a seat in a room and they need to move around the room. Over here, thefts are that high statistics wise so it's kinda strange lol. But that aside, I would think it is very good practice to take care of your belongings. So the ladies here are doing it very right in my opinion.

NO I don't think it is wise or advisable at all - speaking as someone who has had their handbag stolen in the past - I know how awful it is to go through that , so many of us keep most of our lives in our handbags! I learned my lesson from there and am always much more careful now and keep my back on me or with one of my friends or family! xxx

Or, worse they leave their own toddler child or baby in the cart unattended and walk to another isle searching for a big deal at the grocery store! I heard a horror story (true story) about a woman who had left her daughter just feet away standing by the cart and reached over for meats in the grocery store and someone grabbed up the girl and left. Luckily they locked down the store and was able to recover the girl. She had been stashed in the bathroom. She was unharmed. But a more attentive person would have been holding her own child's hand! Or had the child standing next to her so that she never lost sight. And not looking to save a couple dollars on meat prices! Some things are far more valuable than saving money. Kids being number one on that list!

hi beauty queen that could have had a lot worse ending too. women are just too trusting with little ones and that is scary. I saw one woman leave a toddler in the cart and go over an aisle.the kid got up and stood and fell out, breaking her arm, and making every shudder as she howled bloody murder. it just takes a second for a disaster to happen.

I think that is really dumb. Why would you trust that no one will take your purse? It has money in it and your cards seriously. I would hope women would have more common since then to leave their purses on tables and in shopping carts.

My answer is no. It can not be a wise to leave handbag on a table at library. But it is true that "To err is human". So we have to leave not only handbags but also any other things which we carry with us on hand. My words are we have to make error or wrong when we don't know it is an error. Though we can leave it absolutely but we can try to leave bad habit to leave hand bags at a public place.

juteyarn you cannot any more assume anything is safe to leave as it is surely not. the employees are not there to watch over your stuff. so you must take care of it and keep your hands on it at all times.

I work in a library, too, and it always amazes me how people think we would look after their things, kids, or whatever. We're too busy to keep an eye on people's things. People have this impression that all we do all day is read books, but we deal with hundred of people and requests all day long. How can we be responsible for people's carelessness. I think this is another example of someone not wanting to be responsible for their own actions.

Hello dear Hatley. I think that it is unwise to leave their bags on the table, as it gets stolen very easily. Well, I have a friend, who left her laptop bag with the laptop inside on the table of Mc'donald one day when she left the table to order some food, but she found her laptop stolen in a few minutes after she went back to the table. She was so sad when she told me this. I was so sorry for her and could do nothing but remind her that she is supposed to be more careful with whatever valuable bags she has with her next time, which is very important. Thank you for your discussion, dear Hatley. Enjoy yourself.

hi williamjisir yes people also leave laptaps on the tables at the librarybut at least they are bigger but stillnot a good idea at that.

I dont think this is safe and yet if something does happen they blame others for not watching their bag!! These people dont have to look after someones elses bag as they are busy doing their own thing. Many times working as a cashier people leave their car keys, purse/wallet at the end of the checkout while they pack their bags. The one thing that they need and they forget it!! It is madness, pure madness!! Thanks for sharing x

I have seen this many times , and I have no idea why she thought while you were working you would be able to watch her bag . It is not safe , and one day it will get stolen . I know there are many people out there that say it wont happen to me , but you just never know . I always have mine around me , or have my fiance watch over my bag .

When I am in the library, I would also leave my bag on the table, but I haven't wished someone to watch it for me, just because it's easier for me to look for books without a bag on me. PS, perhaps someone leaves their bags on the tables just to take over the seats.:-)
