Are you concerned about someone rooting through your trash and finding confidential information? I recently bought a small paper shredder just as a safety precaution and make certain nothing goes out in the trash with personal information on it. Do you have a shredder and use it on a regular basis?

Well I live in an apartment and I DO see people sifting through the trash. I have a cross cut shredder and I use it on everything with my personal info on it. You never can be too safe. And I've had my identity stolen, so I know what a pain it is to fix!

Was your identity stolen as a result of throwing something out in the trash? I heard people do it but have never seen it. Thanks for responding.

Not from the trash, but when I used my card to reserve a hotel room. I didn't pay with my card, my company did, but they wouldn't let me have the room unless I put down a credit card in case there were room charges. I personally think the hotel didn't secure my info. So it's not just YOUR personal trash that can be unsafe, but businesses as well. No one really knows what they do with their paperwork, even though there are regulations they are supposed to follow.

Yes and I went out and bought one for my mom too so she can shred her papers. This is one of the ways that crooks get your information to commit identity theft, it is called "dumpster diving" and the best thing to do is shred anything and everything that has any of your information on it.

I have a shredder and shred all my stuff before it goes in the trash. Although I can't imagine someone wanting to route through all that smelly stinky trash for info, I still shred it. Maybe there is someone who might find a stray piece of paper at the dump. Anyway, I do it for the just in case and for my piece of mind.

I guess there are people that do root through trash. Guess desperate people do desperate things! Thanks for responding.

Mine is just a little one but my husband has a huge one in his office and he also has a company who picks up papers from the office and shreads them. Can't be too safe. Thanks for responding.

Yes. I am definitely concerned with that. I don't have a shredder but I manually shred my envelopes, bills and documents. I never throw anything away without ripping it up as good as possible first. We have to protect our identity.

Exactly. Sometimes I use a pair of scissors to cut up the old bills if I'm in a hurry. Thanks for responding.

Our trash goes out in the dumpster and is dumped every other day so someone would have to climb in and root through everything to find anything. They would have to be pretty desperate to do that. We have a shredder but it works like crap so if I have anything that's really confidential then I tear it up real small. I probably need to get another shredder. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**[/b]

I do have a cheap shredder but it works. I understand also about tearing up paper in very small pieces. I sometimes use a scissors instead of taking out the shredder. Our trash is only picked up once a week. Thanks for responding.

I bought us a paper shredder a while back and we use it almost daily. I think I will be shopping for a bigger and better one soon since I know now what all to look for. I just bought a cheap one to start out with.

That's what I did. Invested in a cheap-o just to see if I liked it. Mine works great but wouldn't work well for large projects. I overheated it once and thought it was broken..lol Thanks for responding.

We haven't had any problems but as a precaution I make certain nobody can see important information. Thanks for responding.
