Is it ever appropriate for a boss to yell at an employee?

I was working at a job. I love my work, but working for someone else often involves having to do things I don't like doing. I was at work last week and my boss was obviously frustrated with is own job. This man has been in this business a total of a year and a half, and he is a manager. I have been in the business for 16 years, and have been a manager, so I know how frustrating it can be. Anyway, this guy takes me into his office, and with the door open, starts yelling at me and telling me that my work is unacceptable (I am very good at what I do), and threatened to fire me. This guy just went off like a loose cannon. I calmly told him that it was not ok for him to speak to me in that manner. He only responded by telling me not to give him an attitude. I calmly told him again that I was not giving him an attitude, and that it was inappropriate and unacceptable to speak, or yell, at me that way. I think I forgot to mention that everyone in the place heard him. The other employees, clients, everyone. I ended up quitting that job. I needed to anyway. I was not making enough money to make up for the stress and all the hours I spent there not getting paid. The thing is, I have been a manager in the same business for more than 5 years, and I never found it necessary to raise my voice to an employee. I think it is poor management skills, not to mention that it is not a good way to keep good employees. Is it ever ok for a manager to yell at an employee?

I do not think that it was acceptable at all. I am glad that you quit, although I would have definitely taken it over his head and let them know that yelling was involved. Yelling is never an acceptable manner of punishment whether it be at a job or at home. Have a Wonderful Day!

Thank you for your response. The thing is that there was nothing for him to be punishing me about, which makes it worse. I'm glad I quit too!

No they do not have any right to shout or yell or do anything that might be deemed as threatening behaviour, and i for one would soon put a stop to it wether I had done anything wrong or not I wouldnt scream or yell at my kids id not expect adults to do it to each other either, theres ways and means of getting a point across and shouting isnt one of them.
