Do you think it's OK to simply give a half hearted effort on something?

By nature, I'm a perfectionist. When most people hear that, they imagine that I'm saying I do everything perfect. And that's not true. I don't do anything perfectly. But sometimes I feel compelled to keep at a task until it's perfect. And since perfection is not an achievable goal, I keep going around in the same repetitive circle until I give up. My spouse wonders why I don't write short stories anymore. The evil curse called perfectionism is the reason. I would just rework them into the ground. Very frustrating. So I'm wondering. Is it alright to do an OK job at something? Does it have to be perfect, every time?

It all depends on what you're doing. There are times I will do a half @$$ed job of cleaning the house... but I always do a thourough job of cleaning the dishes and important things like that. You can do a less than perfect job of mowing your lawn, but you want to be perfect if cutting your hair. Some things don't require perfection, while others do.

Never thought of it that way. But it does make sense. Not everything has to be done to perfection!

Everyone has different perception of what perfection means to them. Being too perfect is a hindrance to getting greater role life. Why aim for so high? Thats my thinking. A little job done even if it is less perfect will bring success if done sincerely and wholeheartedly.

Well, for me, it depends on the situation. There are times that being neat, and perfect is a good way to go, and then there are the times when it does not always need to be the best to be rewarded from it. Now, when it comes to writing, sometimes I am the same way too. Especially when with sites such as Associated Content, when I submit something for pay, I keep on getting turned down, to where I am not sure whether my writing will ever be good enough there anymore. I guess maybe I should just relook over some of the stuff that I have wrote, submit some of it and then go from there. Or find other places besides there, and hope for the best as well. Maybe sometimes we are our own worst judge and critic, and should try anyway? Is this what is holding you back as well?

There is one place besides Helium that I use that pays for articles. I think they pay per view, like $4.00 per 1000 page views. I love them!

I suffer from the "disease of perfectionism" and have discovered that a lot of people think that means that a perfectionist does everything perfectly. In fact we are just tormented when we can not achieve what we perceive as perfection. I actually call myself a recovering perfectionist. It is my belief that perfectionists are just people who have something from their past that we are trying to hide from (or keep away from) by driving ourselves in circles in the search for perfection. When I realized what it was that I thought I needed to be perfect for...... then accepted(realized) that perfection is never achievable, I was suddenly set free from the viscious cycle. For me, it is never alright to do an OK job.... I must give my all to whatever I do and then I can remind myself that perfection is not achievable. I need to be able to say "Did I do my best? Then it's OK"

I'm working at being a recovering perfectionist! But I do try to always do my best. I don't want to use perfectionism to procrastinate. Thanks for the advice. I will try that.

Your wanting things to be perfect all the time is called something but I can't remember what it is however, there is help for it. As for me, I'm the same way but I've given in a wee bit over the years because I figure this, it doesn't have to be folded perfect, it doesn't have to lay on my dest perfect, it doesn't have to line up perfect, actually, nothing has to be perfect just decent enough. I've come to realize, life is just too darned short to live like that and besides, when I'm gone, no one is going to know about my being perfect or not so what does it matter? I hope you see the point I'm trying to convey.... it's just not worth it consuming my whole life but my life consuming it instead. AND, as long as one gives it their best shot and did the best they could, then it's perfect in my eyes.

no okay but its fine to do a more than adequate job on something, I dont do half hearted but have learned to do things as well as I can in an intelligent amount of time. I used to be a p;erfectionist but I never finished so would rather do something pretty good and actually finish it than prefec t and just half done.Iam never one for half hearted effort, as I have to go all out on anything but its just going to be well done not perfect.

Well done, but not perfect! That is more than most people even try to do! I like your standards. They sound like mine.

I don't think it's necessary to aim for prefection, but I don't think it's righ to be half-hearted either. I thik that the best thing to do and the right hing to do is to GIVE IT OUR BEST EFFORT!! Your best and my best may be two totally different things, but the ocmmon thing is that in doing our best we have done exactly that...OUR BEST!!!!

That's true. In life, a person's best effort is the only talent they need. All the other pieces will fall into place. Thanks for your comments.

It is perfectly all right to do an OK Job. Our society labels you from the time you enter school with the grade system they use. Any one who is not an "A" student most be a failure. But A "C" means average. At my Daughters Eighth grade graduation, over half the class was on honer roll which means that over 50 percent was above average. But really, doesn't that make them just average themselves? Does that mean that the label of average is bad? The School systems will tell you that it is bad. You have to have at least a "B" average if you expect to go on to college. Where does that leave the rest of the people. It leaves them as just average. There is something wrong with that. Isn't there? So if you just write something that is OK then you most be average. Being a perfectionist can get in the way with life. Most perfectionist never accomplish anything. They are to worried that what they do is not good enough, so they just give up. That really shopuld not be labled as a perfectionist but rather a failure. Do you want tho be a failure? I would think not! So just do it and do not worry what others think.

Its a nice habit of completing things WITH perfection..!! While others even face problems in even COMPLETING a task they take up!! SO in first place its really good that you at least complete every task you take up. But in such a busy life you can't just redo every thing around you to get to the perfection. Its totally OK in doing an OK job. Some times you need to take a break!!! In fact think it the other way you may be missing to do other important things while being a perfectionist some where else!!! Take things according to their priorities and need!!! Its more important to get things done and OK job and IN time!!! Value your time the most .. its priceless!!! :)

I am not a perfectionist, but I do like things to be done properly. Now my hubby is a perfectionist, he can drive me nuts sometimes with the way he is over things. But I think it is OK to just do an OK job as long as I try my best at something it is good enough for me!

My spouse is a perfectionist with his art. I have to take his art and put it up so that he won't overwork the piece. Artists are always that way!

no it is not necessary to be perfect all the time and perhaps it not possible too. but i would say if you do not know a thing better then dont get to that job because it may hurt someone and that is not right thing. well, you can try to be perfect but look at the matter that someone do not get harassed by your mis effort. try your job better for you but not hampering anyone

If you searching the perfection with every one, then it will be wrong, because it is not possible for every one to get perfection with their jobs, you may be care about your works with perfection, but some people may trying to get this but not, so in that time you should encourage them and make them perfect with their works then you will get more happy. Just think of it, good luck.

People who are perfectionist make life very difficult for themselves. At least that has been my experience being around them. Nothing they do is ever good enough. Perfectionist tend to put a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves. Now, I am not a perfectionist by any stretch of the imagination but I have experienced being around them. I hope that you do write those stories. I enjoy writing also. Good luck! I will be interested to see what others have to say. Have a wonderful day.

I would like to think that I try to give 100% in whatever I'm doing, and try to do the task in hand to the best of my abilities. I know a lot of people who unfortunately don't have this same ethic and have often wondered how our lives would pan out differently!

Half-hearted is not good. But perfection isn't good either. Putting too much pressure on yourself to be perfect leads to stress and takes the enjoyment out of life. I do my best- that is what I aim for.

Dear friend, As a perfectionist you goal is get perfect I hope it depends entirely on oneself in cases that the person is one is responsible for all of it. Whereas in organisations it is a team work if one does it in half hearted and others more dedicated it may effect the whole output may be whole organisation. Hence being perfectionist and half hearted varies according to situation one is in.

It is so funny that you mentioned that just because you are a perfectionist doesn't mean that you do everything perfectly. One time, at a holiday dinner, my aunt said that her son and I were perfectionists. At first, I was like "what?!" because I know that I don't do most things perfectly. But, when I thought about she was right. I will attempt to do something to perfection so much to the point that I will lose sight of the goal. And, I end up not achieving perfection and driving myself crazy. And, maybe if I didn't have the confidence that I could do something to perfection, I wouldn't even try. Trying to constantly achieve perfection will drive you mad, partly because it is impossible. Just give whatever you do your best shot and don't worry so much about the outcome. And, realize when something is not worth the stress that it takes to get it done. A lot of times "perfect" is a subjective word.

I think that if you are going to only do something half hearted, then you shouldn't even attempt to do it at all. If its worth doing, its worth giving your best.
