I am shopping for a new digital camera. What should I look for in terms of features if I want to use it for taking pictures when I travel?

I used to use a single lens reflex 35mm camera years ago but gave it up when my children were young. A couple of years ago I received a Digitrix digital camera free with a printer I purchased and had fun with it until the shutter mechanism broke. It took decent pictures - nothing fancy and no features. Just point and shoot with a fixed lens and speed. Now I would like something better to take with me when I travel. Is there anything good in the $300 - $400 range and what should I look for in terms of features?

Since you're looking for a camera for traveling, I'd highly recommend one that uses a Lithium Ion battery as opposed to regular AA batteries. The Lithium Ion batteries last so much longer.

Well since u have used a digital camera, i think u can go for a new one which is in the higher category than the point and shoot category. Go for something which provides manual focussing features. As far as the megapixel goes, with the trend,as its going,i think 5MP will be good enough. And look out for at least 4X optical zoom. That will serve ur travel needs. do not go for something bulky.its gonna be a bother to carry. My suggestion is a CANON POWERSHOT A700 which is an excellent option. Its within ur budget as well.

If you would bring it when you travel, I recommend having an all weather camera. In that case you can take it anywhere you like. You like photography? Want a site where you can publish your photos on the net? =)

The lens manufacturer is the most important for quality, canon, nikon, olympus, pentax all are good quality lenses aswell as panasonic with leica approved lenses and sony with zeiss approved lenses. megapixels determine picture printing size before it starts to pixelate not original picture quality. (this is the lens). so try and think what size you would print to and go on that. 4 megapixels will do a good A4 size pic, 6megapixel will do a good A3 and so on. depending on how many manual functions u want will be up to you. zoom will be up to you too but most come with a 3x optical and 4x digital (digital will reduce quality). some hybrids have up to 12x optical zoom. Digital SLR cameras are very high quality but i believe out of your price range. so look at cameras such as the Sony H2, panasonic FZ7 and similar panasonic models, and the canon powershot range. they are 'Hybrid' cameras, inbetween an SLR and a compact. in quality and size. hope this helps (i work in a camera shop so i should hopefully know what im talking about, lol) Conan

I have used both Nikon Cool Pic and the Canon Power shot A530. Both excellent cameras for your use, I perfer the Canon. If price is a coneren you might try a Kodak. Look for Optical zoom and typoe of battery. For travel one that uses AA abtteries is best. If you like using the canon you can always Upgrade to Canon PowerShot S2 or S3 with Image Stablization and a bigger Optical zoom.
