What an insult! I hope Senator Obama sues the New Yorker

I'm not a fan of his but I expect the media to treat our candidates with dignity and respect. This magazine cover is insulting and they should be ashamed of themselves. It shows Obama in the oval office dressed as a muslim with a portrait of Bin Laden on the wall and his wife, Michele, dressed in army fatigues and armed. I can't even justify this as a parody. See the attached picture for the cover.

The odd thing about this incident is that while Obama and McCain both condemned the New Yorker for publishing it, the overwhelming majoriy of Obama's supporters that I saw on the news justified it as election year satire that always happens and seemed to think it would have no negative effect on Obama's campaign. I don't agree with them, because Obama is a relatively unknown political figure to a lot of people, and he is still trying to carve out his political identity before the nation. I think the New Yorker will probably sell a lot of magazines this time around because of all the publicity, but the majority of people will probably view the cover without reading the article which gives a positive view of Obama. What a lousy way to make a buck.

See, that comment dragon is what I'm conveying. Folks are pretty much decided on how they will go, but you might have some person in mainstream America that sees this and decides perhaps this IS true and go with the GOP. After all, a lot of folk believe the media and it can cause shifting attitudes.

People that were teetering before that cover will probably jump over to McCain's side. You know the type, they believe every negative things they hear because they're afraid of someone new. Obama is certainly new! Journalism nowadays isn't the honorable profession it once was. Dumpster divers have cleaner hands than journalists.

Yellow Journalism isn't anything new, it is how we ended up fighting in Cuba back before WW1. Yellow Journalism has alway, though, led to unnesseary inhuman and despicable paths. It led us into Iraq, made people question Kerry enough to re-elect Bush. Sooner or later they will cry wolf, and the people will no longer jump. Their own integrity is in their hands, this is why I don't by the NYT, or any form of journalism. I will not pay a penny till they clean up their acts.

The problem is, people will continue to put up with the media's outrages until you take away their 400 channels of crap, their big screen tv's and hike the price of gas to $20 a gallon. Then maybe the people will awake from their complacency. I won't hold my breath, though.

Don't forget the burning American Flag in the fireplace. I find this tasteless and stupid. Lawsuit worthy? no. For crying out loud, he is running for president and that gets nasty. Remember past elections. remember Clinton? Bush? Dole? Kerry? Need I go on? While this cover is over the top, I do believe they were just trying to touch on the internet rumors. Unfortunately the covers of this magazine never have to do with whats inside. It is difficult to guess what they mean, but I promise they will have some kind of "excuse".

After a day of thinking about it, you're right, it's now worthy of a lawsuit. I was just really upset. I'm a republican and it seems to me that Sen. Obama has been picked on a lot, questioning his patriotism, his religion and even if he's a legitimate citizen. Politics shouldn't be so dirty, they should have a little dignity to them but I guess I'm a dreamer.

Well, actually if you read the article on the inside that relates to the cover, you will find that it is actually satirizing all the stupid and untrue things that some of his detractors are saying about him. It's obviously not meant to be an insult. The editor is quite guilty...of bad judgment. That's actually the first time that I have seen that cover of the New Yorker.

I wondered what the article would say. I gathered from interviews and articles that it was an expose of stupid attitudes and ignorance but I wasn't able to read the actual article. I do think the editor used poor judgment. I'll bet that it certainly will sell the magazine, though.

that is indeed very disgusting media has no right to behave in this childish manner...it is very clear if Obama is winning and gaining popularity it is because the citizens are voting for him...if he is disliked so strongly then why are you guys voting in his favour he is not really forcing anyone to vote for him...it is afree vote a vote of choice of the citizens and by the citizens...i just do not approve this kind of an irresponsible behaviour on part of the media..

Our media is disgusting. They are supposed to be objective reporters of the news but it has deteriorated over the last 30 years and now they're nothing but political puppets. Thanks for giving your opinion!

Wow. Must have been a really, really slow day for the media if they had enough time to work on that. Then again, it doesn't take that much effort to be immature. I can't believe people are still going on about his name and the possible implications of it. I suppose people will do anything to try and switch attention over to McCain.

McCain wasn't very pleased with it, either, for what it's worth. The New Yorker is supposed to be a satirical publication but I see nothing humorous in the way they portrayed Senator and Mrs. Obama. I can think of a dozen other ways to get the point across--they were making fun, supposedly, of peoples' misconceptions of Obama.

I can understand what they were trying to do, but they really have to think about things like that before they publish them. I mean, there's gotta be someone there who has enough sense to know that not everyone thinks like they do or understand the meaning of it. Paradies like this have been done before with similar reactions. What makes them think that this cover is any different or that they would be immune to the backlash?

They must have some alternative intention. But I can think of many ways to make their point without being so insulting to Sen. Obama and his wife.

I honestly do not give a moments thoughts to idiotic magazines like this one. They are not worth my energy or my time but unfortunately there are people out there who do pay attention to them and others like my great aunt who believed every word that is written regardless of the source. My son has been begging to pull up this picture for me all day long, he apparently saw it last night, but it wasn't until I came across this post that I bothered to look it up for myself. It is ignorant and the people involved with it's drawing and it's approval need a serious hobby.

As you said, there are people who believe anything they hear on tv or read--those are the ones who are dangerous and get leaders elected that run the country for their own benefit. I almost wish there were a test before anyone is allowed to vote, to weed out the gullible people who keep electing the same destructive, greedy jerks we always get.

It would be hard to prove malice and that's what must be involved for a successful lawsuit. Besides, given the past day to think about it, I think Sen. Obama will gracefully look the other way and prove himself to have a little more dignity than most people involved in this particular political contest.
