Does anyone else get wary...

..about myLot posts about making money, where the original poster doesn't provide a link then and there? I don't know why, but it always sends off alarm bells in my mind and gut when someone says they found a way to make money but won't offer a link right then and there to prove it. Often you'll see these guys telling you to friend them so they can send it to you via private message. Now, maybe these people have a perfectly legitimate reason for doing this- maybe you can only give out one specific link per person (though I've never heard of that happening before)- but it still makes me very wary about that sort of thing on myLot. Am I the only one?

I am not completely certain so I advise you to refer to the mylot tab, but I do believe that links are not allowed in that context. Therefore those who do say friend them for the link are most likely just be cautious.

Ooh, I didn't think of it that way. That makes sense. Thank you.

No, I am the same way. I will usually pass up the opportunity or scam if they do not provide it. It doesnt seem like it is worth my time to start playing cat and mouse in a private forum. I don't know maybe that is ugly, but I just don't do it.

I generally ignore them unless it's a program that I know well or a friend that I trust completely. Most of these people are just trying to gain referrals for whatever program they're involved in. Some of these programs only seem to pay you if you have a lot of referrals. I don't fall into those traps. If it's not someone I know, I will go around their referral and directly to the site to sign up. I would never sign up for a program under a stranger. If it was that easy to make money, then everyone would be doing it. If everyone was doing it, then there wouldn't be enough to go around.

Just as long as there are people who sign up not using a referral link then there will always be referrals for the sites to sell

I tend to do the same thing. If I don't know the person well, then I generally go directly to the site instead of through a referral link just to be on the safe side. Thanks for posting!

Well, I am one of the people that does this, and there is one reason and one reason only why I do this. If I put the ref link in the discussion, then it will get deleted and what is the point in that? Even if I don't put the ref link, there is still a 50/50 chance the post will get deleted. So most people that have learned about this will start a discussion, explain the opportunity, possibly without even the name of it, then ask people to PM them if they are interested to get the rest of the details. Does this mean that its a legitimate opportunity, not really, but it doesn't mean that its a scam either. When people do this, nine times out of ten its just so the discussion won't get deleted, as its against MyLot TOS to do so. I hope this answers your question.

It's against the rules to post links containing referral ID's. This is however supposed to be a place for discussions so when they are very secretive and ask to send PM or email to get information, then yes that does get me uptight. In fact on many occasions I have pointed this out asking for more details (with the user probably swearing at me ). I also feel a need to 'protect' newer users who are looking for online earning ventures and are probablyu not so well protected as the veterans when it comes to sniffing out the conmen.

Before getting involved in any such venture, always do a little research about the program. It is amazing how much info a 30 second (or less) search online can yield in regards to any potential money-making venture.

That's why I'm always so careful. I could understand not posting links if that's against myLot rules, but if someone doesn't even post the name of the website I'm even more cautious.

Hi stagewhisper. I can understand your feelings of concern, but I would like to assure you that there is a very legitimate reason for the post(s) not having a link. It's because it's specifically against MyLots TOS, though some will do so anyway. In these cases, the member that posts a referral link to their discussion winds up having their discussion deleted along with the responses of anyone that replied to it. Unfortunately, even discussions that start out without links can be deleted if someone adds one to their reply. This can be upsetting when members see a decrease in their posts and anticipated earnings. MyLot prefers that we direct members to our profile pages or that we handle those links thru PM. I hope this helps to relieve your anxiety, but I hope you'll understand that this is a discussion board, not a bulletin board, and we're encouraged to discuss various types of earning opportunities. When, after finding out more information about a specific opportunity, you want to check out the site(s), all you have to do is ask and MyLotters are usually quick to respond.

That helps ease some of my concerns, but that doesn't explain why people can't mention the name of the website/opportunity. For example, let's say I want to invite people to Pine Cone Research. I have two options in setting up a post: 1. Hi, guys, I was invited to this really neat site called PCR. It's where you (insert work here) and earn (insert money here) at a pretty decent rate. Unfortunately, you can only sign on if someone invites you. If you'd like to be invited, feel free to post in here or friend and PM me, and I'll send you the link. Or... 2. Hi, guys! I found this site and it's really cool! You make tons of money! PM me for details! The second option is one that I see a LOT on here, and those are what I'm wary of. Even if you can't give a link, you should be able to give the name of the website/group running the payment. That is why I'm wary of so many of these threads. I hope this clears up what I'm so wary about. Take care, and thanks for replying.

LOL, I'm sure one of my more recent posts would have probably put you on your guard since I didn't mention the name of a very new site anywhere in my tags or in my original post, but in that case, I waited to determine if there was any interest in "testing" a new site. Since this isn't something just everyone wants to pursue, I didn't mention the name until the first person responded and we began to discuss the opportunity. I do know how you feel about the other type of post & run discussions though. Those I have a tendency of avoiding, just to protect my earnings. More often than not, I'm already a member or wrote it off as not worth my time to pursue.

The most likely reason is that it is against mylot rules to post referral links in discussions so if they posted it they would lose out on earnings as the discussions would get deleted. The whole add me as a friend may just be to check that the person is genuinly interested, but otherwise is unneccessary as they can do what I do and have a site that is then set as "my website" on mylot.

The rules of mylot specifically say you should not post referral or affiliate links on a discussion and I for one agree with that. I find that the 'breadcrumb trail' is more appropriate where you tell people something about a scheme and invite enquiries through proper channels such as a pm. That way only really interested people enquire and there is no danger of being reported or banned.
