Yikes! I Don't Believe This

Well as we all know energy costs are going up, up, up...But I still can't believe this. I just got my electric bill. Now you have to realize, I live in a glorified studio apartment. I don't have air conditioning, only one fan going...I keep all lights off save for the one in whichever room I happen to be in at the moment...Unlike what most people think computers don't take much juice..sometimes the equivalent of a 60 watt bulb...So all in all, I don't have much electricity running. BUT.... My new electric bill is $91.60...FOR WHAT????? This is a jump of about $25.00 from last month's bill. Has anyone else been "hit" by a real leap in their electric bill like this? Grrrrrr!

No, I have not, yet, but I suspect it will come. It was gas bills two years ago. Hubby cannot understand why I do not want to use the a/c unless I just cannot take it anymore, but I do not want to pay for things that are not tangible. I understand that because my electricity if from a co-op situation we have some of the absolutely lowest rates in the whole nation.

You know maybe at this rate I should be one of those people who gets some kind of generator and a bicycle, and pedal my electric needs...LOL

I know that some electric companies have different rates for summer billing than they have for the rest of the year. So even if your electricity consumption stays the same, your bill still goes up. It's meant to discourage people from using a lot of electricity when there's a higher demand for it, with all of the air conditioners running. We also don't have air conditioning in our apartment (you only need it about 1 week a year here), but our summer electricity bills thus far have been low. We only get a bill every other month, though, so I haven't seen one for the real summer months yet this year. (Our winter electric bills were the high ones for us!)

Thank goodness I don't have AC...can you imagine what my bill would be then? Still think it's outrageous considering I live in an apt and no AC going

That is a big jump. I wold call your electric company and see if they did an actual reading or are estimating or what is happening. That is too much for a month with no AC

I just emailed them..I sometimes get a better response that way. My electric company is ConEd and my energy provider is IDT ...I had signed up with IDT as they were supposed to SAVE me money...yeah, sure.

Is that for gas and electric both or just electric? Ours is billed together but ours did jumped $17 last month. And they always show at the bottom of the bill a comparison of what you used last year in the same month, we were down considerably on usage. We have replace all the bulbs in the house with compact flourescents and don't turn on a light or appliance unless absolutely necessary and it still keeps going up. I started to look into alternatives like wind power and solar power. Those are great if you can afford to put out a huge chunk of money all at once! The cheapest wind unit I could find would take 5 yrs to pay for itself! Ridiculous. I just try really hard to keep everything shut off that isn't being used. I don't even turn the bathroom light on anymore unless I need to fix my hair. There's enough light that comes thru the window for me to take a shower or whatever without the light on. It's just really pathetic that I have to think about NOT turning on the light when I have to go to the bathroom to save money.

Nope that's just for electric alone, my gas bill is separate. LOL...if I could manage electricity here with wind or solar power I would...don't think my landlord would go for that though..hehe...maybe I should resort to getting a generator of some kind and a bicycle and pedal my electric needs..Mmmmm...do you ever miss the toilet especially at night?

Ouch, that hurts. I know the costs are going up but generally in summer your bills tend to be much lower. Ours have been especially since it hasn't been a very hot summer and we aren't using the air conditioning. Imagine what that bill is going to be like in winter with the price of oil, gas and electricity all going up.

Gee could you imagine what my bill would be like if I did have AC? This really sucks how everything is going up due to the energy/gas costs...everything is going up except our earnings, or in my case SSI benefits

Those rotten scoundrels (the electric people) said they were raising the rates 22% what a shame, we can't afford gas, my rent just went up 8.5%, we are eating salmonella tainted tomatoes, scallions and onions, beef is infected with e-coli, Bumble bee tuna has botulism, vinyl shower curtains are throwing off cancer causing toxins in the air, what else is going to happen to us?

Hate to say this but that is what I was thinking, either it's going up again in August or they are charging you now for August, does your bill say it's for July or August?

It's not your usage at all, the electric company said here in NYC all residential customers are getting an increase of 22% and all businesses are getting an increase of 25%. We just have to pay more for the electricity for the same appliances we already have.

Maybe your service provider made a mistake somewhere. That is really a big jump and unless your electricity consumption increased drastically in the last few days, you should not really have that kind of bill! Anyway, the best thing to do now is call your service provider and ask what happened to your bill.

On the bill, it says it's an estimated charge...but yikes I've gotten estimated bills before and they were never that much...and I checked an old bill from last year and it was $30 LESS than now.

I always have a large PG& E bill because of the pool so far it has not gone up to much. I will see how much it has gone up since we had those 112 degree days last week. I am dreading how much that will be. My neighbors have not opened up their windows since the summer started. It is 79 degrees outside with a nice breeze. I can still hear their air conditioner going on and off. I do not know how they can stand the house being so locked up. I cannot sleep without the windows and our sliding glass door opened in our bedroom. It saves on electricity to let the cool breeze in and I like it better.

My company is ConEd...but I've heard PG&E is another "winner"--that company is the one usually out in the Long Island area of NY, while we're stuck with ConEd...the name is right, don't you think? "Con" LOL I always have my bedroom window open 365 days of the year...I can't stand a locked up home either..gets me kind of claustrophobic...LOL

Things might be as bad in New York as in Florida. Right when we can afford it least, the Public Service Commission gave the electric company permission to raise their rates by sixteen per cent. I think this is obscene. My house is huge, so I really shouldn't complain about more than $500 electric bills in this hot, hot summer. Still, I'm trying to think of whose air conditioning I might use during the day, at least until I go back to work in a month or so. I can't imagine anything else you could do to save on the bill. I'm really sorry you and so many others are going through this.

Wow you pay more than $500..is that per month..but as you say you live in a large house. I can't figure out any way to save more...like I said I never have that much electric on...the only thing on continuously here is the one fan and the refrigerator...I don't even use a microwave (which uses a lot of electricity)

Hi Pyewacket here in the UK I am on a key meter as before I was working I had one of £200 that I couldn't pay immediately so they put me on this and recently I have been feeding £20 a week for WHAT? instead of £10. I like you am on the computer a lot and rang to query and the computer only uses 1kw of energy if on constantly for 10 hours so it is not that. Even though I have three children the majority of the time there is only myself and my son so I guess it is just the price hikes that are doing this. Ellie :D

Yes I started reading into just how much "juice" computers use and they really don't use that much...so like what gives? I hardly have any electricity on at all..don't watch much TV..maybe hour at most, no microwave, technically speaking the only things on are my refrigerator, one fan, one light at a time, the computer..that's it

Hey Pye, This is a very painful subject! I also live in NY-in Westchester County and have to deal with ConEd(wish I could use your little mean smiley) I have seen my electric bill jump higher and higher each month and have no idea why. I also don't use ac only a fan. I hate lights, only use out of necessity. So I don't get it. As you know talking to those ConEd people is a bad joke. The just double talk you with that kilowatt stuff like I know what that means. They know we don't and we don't have any other choice but to pay whatever amount they tell us to. That really pisses me off. We don't even get a second choice! So they can't explain the jump in the electric and they just want us to pay it. My bill has more than doubled in one month and this has been happening for the last 3 months again with no real explanation!

I know...just try getting a REAL person to talk to at ConEd...it's all that automated crap..press 1 for this, press 2 for that. I managed to find an old bill from last year around this time...the bill was $60.12 --so that means a $31.00 jump for the same time from last year...and again...for what? Did you hear they are to raise the costs to 22 percent beginning in August? Lovely.

I paid all of the sudden $176 with Ac running only for 2 hours at night. Other than this I didn't change anything. Also, my latest bills where around $90 already, with usage only $50 and the rest was between federal taxes to additional taxes and fees. I hate to think what I am going to see next month....

Our electric bill is always high. We live in a pretty big house by some people's standards. I go behind everyone and try to keep lights turned off and what not, but the people that complain about the bill the most tend to leave the most lights in the house on. So, our bill tends to run pretty high. I'm kind of afraid what the energy hike is going to do to our bill now. It's not like we can really afford a jump in our bill as it is.

Yes. Ours has taken a leap as well. There are some days when it is so hot and humid that it is hard to breathe and I break down and use the air conditioning then. But most of the time I don't. The budget is taking a beating with all the increased expenses.
