of course its ok for a boy to have a pet.. remember that Adam, a male, was the first person to be given the authority on all animals.. also, there's this saying that "dog is man's bestfriend", again, its male.. all of my brothers love pets thats why we have 3 dogs now in the house and 2 cats in our other house, because they can't live together..well, the point is, pets are for all of us, it won't make you less masculine by having a pet..

Yeah, why not? Since when does gender matter when caring for a pet? If anything it teaches a child to learn how to take care of something alive that can't fend for themselves. I think a good age is five or six to introduce a pet into their lives. And I don't mean the 'family' pet, I mean something that they alone (with partial supervision) have to learn to take care of.

Boy with his new puppy - Precious Moments picture of boy with his new puppy
Hi and Welcome to MyLot!! I am the mother to a son and I think it is definitely beneficial that a boy should have a pet or pets while growing up. My son always had pets around while he was growing up. When he was born, we had a dog. As he got older, he got a hamster and eventially a snake and other pets. By having these pets, he learned love and caring treatment of animals and also responsibility. I always took care of the dogs, but he had to take care of the hamster and snake by feeding them and cleaning their cages. I don't think it matters whether a child is a boy or a girl. If possible, they both should have pets as they grow up. I hope you come to like MyLot as much as I do! Have a great day, Char

Almost every male I've ever known has had some kind of pet. I'm puzzled as to why it would not be seen as normal?

I thinks boys with pets are more sensitive and caring. We as girls, like it! Well, most girls do like it. I bet you are considering to have a pet now.
