Beets are the oddest food I've ever used in a recipe!
To me, they taste strange. I've never developed
a taste for beets. I'm sure they're nutritious, but
I just don't know how to cook them in a way to make
them taste good.
At times, I've used unusual ingredients and spices
to make food taste better, especially when the pantry is bare.
Last night, I sprinkled Chicken flavoring from a Ramen
noodle package over my Pork chops! It was such an odd
thing to use, but the results were delicious.
Some experiments do work!
What's the last thing you did in the kitchen that
turned out really good?
What's the most unusual or bad-tasting vegetable or ingredient
you've ever used in a recipe while cooking?

I guess I am not very creatvie I have not used odd ingredients when I cook. My oddest thing is probaly putting marshmallows on peanut butter sandwhiches I started craving those when I was pregnant. I do like potatos bacon and butter cooked together that is a little odd I suppose.

Beets have to be the worst tasting food I have tried to cook. Okra is also another one that I do not care for but tried. Another thing that I found by accident is that you do not want to cook eggplant in a cast iron skillet unless you want the taste of the iron in your eggplant. I have also used the Ramen spice on other foods. Not bad but a little salty. Last night a made a recipe that was pork chops with peaches. My wife told me to use nectarines instead because she likes them better then peaches. Well the recipe also called for vinegar. The nectarines and the vinegar clashed with each other and it did not turn out very good.

I marinaded pork ribs in apple juice and low cal Asian salad dressing, the dressing had sesame seeds in it. Then I took the ribs and marinade and cooked them on top of the stove in a deep pan for two hours. YUM it was a happy surprise. The left overs I added the juice to the left over rice I severed with them. The next day I took the rice mixture, and made fried rice and cut the meat off the bones, added a fried egg, and some veggies, garlic, onions and a little soy sauce and the second night yum also.

I like to pickle my beets, although I like them anyway they are cooked. But when they are pickled it just adds something to them. It is easy to pickle them. All you have to do is wash them, don't peel them, and put them in a big pot and boil them. Once cooked, but not soft, they are easy to peel. Then I cut them into pieces and put them into a jar. The broth is then added to the jar. The broth is 4 cups of water to 1 cup of vinegar to 1/4 cup of sugar, boiled together. Pour the broth over the beets in the jar till they are all covered. Seal the jar and put upside down on your table, over some newspaper. That way if they leak you know the seal isn't good enough and you can reseal it. They are so good.
I also like beets in my borcht and even just boiled with a little bit of garlic salt and butter. I like just about everything so I can't think of a vegetable I don't like.
