How long do usually keep your make-up. DO you keep it until it is all used up? What is the longest you have had something? I know poeople who have had the same blush for like years. I wonder if this is okay or not. Do you regularly clean out your makeup? What is a good rule of thumb to go by for how long to keep makeup?

i don't usually keep makeup. i never wear it. but i remember seeing a story about it on a talk show. they took someone's makeup kit and tested the brushes and stuff. you wouldn't believe how much germs and bacteria they found. i think for almost everything they said only to keep it 6 months to a year at the most.

I wish I could get away without wearing makeup. Think of all the money I could save!

I just read in a magazine that make-up does expire. They say it is because either the makeup breaks down or the bacteria builds up making it unsanitary to use. I usually keep it until it is all used up except for mascara because it dries up and gets nasty if you don't use it within a couple months. I have some makeup that is 5 years old and I don't notice anything negative from it. I clean the brushes that I use and that seems to be fine. If your really worried about something happening I would say don't keep make-up over a year.

It doesn't really expire, but bacteria does build up on it and it can really hurt your health, especially make-up that touches your eyes or mouth. The second respondent had it correct, you really should throw it out after a certain length of time if you don't want to get infections. But, I've heard that some things like foundation and blush, which don't touch any of the mucous membranes, can be kept longer.

Yes it does! It should be used up within two years, otherwise, it's not good for skin. Well, actually I would clear up my cosmetics drawer every 2 years and throw away something that I have keep forever, just to make sure I won't use the expired cosmetics.

I have heard that it does expire, although there are so many oil-free products now that the expirations dates are longer than they used to be. I don't use it, never have, but had to do a few articles on acne-friendly makeup and it's best to toss it after a year or so. Or so I've read!

One of the morning news shows talked about this a few months back. Most women keep make-up much longer than they should. Since I have sensitive eyes, my mascara is only good for about 6-8 weeks. (So, of course, I don't buy mascara that costs an arm and leg.) And I've noticed that if one keeps foundation too long, it starts to smell. The program I watched said that most make-up should be disposed of in 3 to 6 months. Of course, it could have been sponsored by a make-up manufacturer.

Anything you directly apply on skin like foundation should not be used beyond the expiration date mentioned. I dont think its a problem with eye makeup or lipsticks. Please please dont use expired makeup.

I think as long as it smells okay and it isn't used on eyes or mouth area, it should be okay and I remember having blusher for years too. I don't wear make up much these days so usually end up throwing it out. I found out recently though, that on all make up products there is a little symbol that tells you how long the make up will last once opened.
