In case you don't know this
I decided to post it.
I lost a goat many years ago because she broke out of her
fenced yard and devoured the rhibarb patch.
We couldn't save her.

Hope this info helps someone out there. Does it?

They definitely must be boiled first to break down the toxin. I also lost many a goat to wild cherry leaves.

Aimals have a lot of wonderful instincts, but distinguishing good food from toxic food is not one o them. I'm glad you saw this discussion.

Yep, you are right. My grandmother told me about the leaves being poison. The stalk is the part that is eaten. Grandma made some wonderful pies, cookies, and cakes using rhubarb.

Hi raydene! Sorry about your goat. I read the link that you have provided for I am not sure what a rhubarb looks like. And I don't think we have rhubarbs here in our area. But thanks for the information so if ever I came across with those leaves, I will know what they are and will avoid them for sure.
Take care and god Bless!

I grew up with a large garden in my family and remember my parents warning me never to even touch the plant. My Mother would bake pies with it, using the stems but I never cared for them. It's good to teach people about the dreaded rhuarb.

Aaaah ma that is soooo sad! Yes I knew that rhubarb leaves are poisonous, what I find strange is that animals have an instinct that they avoid things that are poisonous, we had a rabbit once and they always knew what was poison and what wasn't. I guess I am wrong then. I must admit they look very tempting those big leaves to animals to munch on.

Thanks for the tip. I dind't know that about the leaves. y husband used to raise goats, so when you said you lost a goa, I thought of him. I'm sure he knows this already. Isn't it interesting how one part o a plant can be poison, and another part of the plant can be turned into something yummy like Rhubarb Crisp that my mother used to make? I'd love some hot rhubarb crisp with vanilla ice cream!!!
