What about the name?

In one of Obama's recent speeches he was listing ways the republican candidates would likely try to entice voters away from him. One of his statements was, "They'll say he has a funny name." Does anyone know what his name means, Barack Hussein Obama? Do you feel name meanings have much significance as to the kind of person someone will be?

A name doesn't mean a damned thing, especially if it's a given name, as opposed to one you picked yourself. Out of curiosity, though, I have looked up what his names mean, just for the hell of it, and this is what I came up with: Barack = blessing/blessed Hussein = handsome Obama = leaning (?) Defining someone by the origins of the words used as their name is silly, though. (Example: ironically, most people named "Angel" I have met are troublemakers. :P) It's on par with astrology and numerology and other nonsense like that. Doesn't mean anything. If someone wants to know what Barack Obama's all about, they should research the MAN, not his name.

"Do you feel name meanings have much significance as to the kind of person someone will be?" The great balladeer and seer, Johnny Cash, answered this question in his great song, "A Man Named Sue!". I think Barack is a name from the Koran and is common among Muslims.

True. Many given names indicate ethnicity because of their origins, but that is often not the case. You can't judge a book by its cover, goes the old saying, but that isnt always the case either. Names cross ethnicities a lot, so it's best not to judge anyone's character or nationality on that basis. After meeting a person you will have a better idea of what their character is about.

Ah I thought he was going to say something like, "because I am black." That is just as ridiculous. It is not the name it is the character. Years ago, my father talked about the anti-Christ and even though I believe that the anti=Christ refers to everyone who is against Christ, there are some that I would have suspected was the chief big human type on this earth, like Adolph Hitler would have been a good candidate, as he was supposed to be Roman Catholic, and here comes Obama who claims to be a Christian -- well I do hope my suspicions are wrong, but he is able to charm people and fool them. So I think there is more to worry than a name. I do think that names make a significance, my father's name referred to someone who was overweight, and that could have been that his ancestor was overly large, so if the name refers to that tendency, then it is significant. However if the last name refers to an area where the ancestor lived, or where he came from, and the descendants no longer live around a river or no longer work as smiths, unless they all become mechanics, then there is no significance.

That is for sure. We have to see what the person acts like. So I guess Obama is using the race card. Not that very nice. Oh thanks for the best response.

I agree that ethnicity or negative connotations people may have toward a certain name are not valid means to pass judgement on a person's character.

I saw that speech and I thought it was pretty witty and sadly true. I'm certainly not accusing all Republicans of using those kinds of tactics but, let's face it, there have been some who have already done so. They're using word association to make people think of "Osama" when they hear "Obama" and Hussein, well that's self-explanatory. Anyone who would think someone's name has anything whatsoever to do with what kind of a person he or she is has to be pretty stupid, wouldn't you say? I think I read years ago that my name means "prim and proper" and I can tell you, that is NOT me...lol! Annie

Your point is a valid one. Obama and Hussein, because of their similarities to the names two of America's most noted enemies, probably conjure up negative images in people's minds, and there are people using that fact against Obama. Similarly, I think if my name was Joan Manson or Martha Koresh, it might cause some people to think of two infamous people out of American history, and I'm glad people don't think of those infamous people when they hear my name.

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet." Barack means 'blessed', Hussein means "good; handsome one", and I can't find a verified meaning for "Obama". Some say it means "crooked" or "bent", but that definition shows up in emails and message boards - I have yet to see it on an actual name definition website. Call him Barack, call him Bobby, or you can even call him Susie - a name doesn't determine a person's character. I should know, my name means princess and I have yet to be treated like a princess, nor have I ever acted like one.

The campaign surpassed ugly long ago. Now it's become ridiculous! If his name were something he chose, it might indicate something about his character. Since he had no say in it, how can it tell us anything except that his parents chose that name? It has opened the door for many to accuse him, falsely, of being a Muslim terrorist, etc., but that has nothing to do with the trut of the man, either.

My post was (1.) what does his name mean? and (2.) do you think peoples names determine anything about who they are as people? How do you feel about those two issues. Nobody was accused in those questions.

Everyone keeps saying that it is a Muslim name, so I am assuming that it must be.

Many Middle Eastern countries are predominately Muslim and Obama's name comes from both Arabic and Kenyan Lao origins so it is probably a common name to be associated with Muslim culture.

Last time I checked calling someone Hussien is actually a complement. In Arabic it means good or handsome, so it means Barack the good or Barack the handsome. Why would anyone be offended about that. What is a name anyways, ones name should not matter. The reason that the name Hussien is such an issue is because Obama is making it an issue. If Obama had just said yes my name is Hussien, so to was my father's middle name. Instead he started shooting back at anyone who used his middle name.

This week, The Daily Show has been showing different clips of one of the guys on Fox News on quite a few occasions pointing out that Barack's middle name is "Hussein," as if that's supposed to be important for the voters to know. Senator Obama was correct on that guess.

Hussein is an unpleasant name in recent American history. But I think most voters already knew that is his middle name, and don't need anyone to make the association for them.

It's not all the time that a name have significants to a person's life, but most of the time your name says a lot about you. Mr. Table, what does this mean? However,in some cultures, so many people attach meaning to their names;when you see someone that behaves as a Strong man or always fighting and you get to realise that his name is Samson,i mean you don't ask so many questions? For Obama,i think his origin is from Kenya or something, from a Muslim background, most likely the name came from his origin!

I don't think that names really leads to the type of person one will be. My name means close to God, I am far from that. After the Omen came out a lot of people named their child Damen but I don't think all those children grew up to be the anti-christ.

Thanks for your response. I think people tend to make those associations in their minds, consiously or unconsiously, if they have strong emotional feelings about a name.
