Do you ever use the wrong postage (stamps) on your envelope when mailing letters

Have you ever used the wrong postage stamps on your envelope for mailing? Do you ever use too many or too few stamps for envelopes? In the US they keep raising the postage stamp rate, so I'm never sure from one week to the next what the correct postage should be. Ordinarily, one first class stamp will mail an envelope (of normal size) anywhere in the country. But since I don't know what first class stamps cost at any given time, I have to sort of guess. Back when stamps cost less than forty cents each, I bought a big bunch! Most times, I tack on a couple extra one cent stamps for each envelope to be sure I'm using the correct postage. That works for me. If it's an extra important envelope like a bank deposit by mail, then I use two first class stamps per envelope. Guess that's better than using less postage than necessary and having my money get lost in the mail.

I don't recall doing that before. But I did notice that the stamps that I have used lately just have first class on them and not the price of the stamp like they use too. I guess that first class stamps don't have the amount. I had to look again to make sure. The Liberty bell there nice and pretty. I don't even know how much a stamp is right now. That's how long it has been since I have mailed something out. I think if they just gave out first class stamps that would take care of that. So you would not have to many or too few stamps on a letter. Have a good one.

Email has spoiled me rotten! I rarely mail personal letters anymore, just bills and sometimes I pay those online. If I had to pay for all the emails I've sent with stamps I'd be broke! Such a money saver!

You are right about that with emails you don't really have to use stamps that much. That does save quite a bit of change. When you think about it just about everything is electronically done to the point that you get things in the mail but rarely send mail. Have a good one.

OMG, you have reminded one of my idiocy. When I was in Japan was back 2000, I did sent a money to my wife using post mail. I did used a correct stamps but the problem I have done is I forgot to put our Country name Philippines. I've lost 40000 yen from that idiocy. This caused me a lot of stress during that time and my wife is keep on calling me to trace where the letter is since it will not arrive yet for a couple of weeks past. When I verify it from the post office it was then get already by the collector. Thanks for reminding me about one of my faults in life.

Oh my goodness! I had no idea that happened to you. My condoloences on the money. The reason I brought up the money part is that it almost happened to us awhile back. We mailed a letter at the postal box at the front of our apartment building and that same day postal rate raise went into effect. My spouse went down to the apartment office and waited for the post person to come by and explained the situation. She was gracious enough to allow him to afix extra postage onto our envelope before taking it. We were lucky to have caught it, cause the envelope contained our paychecks and bank deposit! Best of luck on tracing the money. Don't give up! Something good will happen for you, I'm sure.

Stamp rated go up here all the time too and it can be very tricky adding the right amount of stamps to your letters and packages. I have taken a leaflet from the post office that tells me at what weight I should put what amount worth of stamps on top of the letter. It helps me out a lot but you need a very secure scale to weigh them, so if you haven't got that it's harder /

I have some stamps I bought a few years back during one of the changes in rates. Not sure what they are worth, it was one of those generics. I have lots of them, and I tack them on to anything, unless I have a current stamp. I have so many denominations now, it just is mind boggling.

Most definitely! I have heard that the US Postal service has been bleeding red ink for many years and absorbing much of the actual cost as offset by the government. I guess with budget cut backs from the government they are being forced to pass the true cost of mailing along to the consumer! Well, we got many years of good service at low prices.

I did once. I used an old one to send a letter to the USA, I guess they didn't notice, or they decided to look the other way, because it went through anyway. Maybe they hought it was important (it was a letter to my husband and there were a lot of lip prins on he outside of the envelope) and decided to take pitty on the sender, and not penalize me for not putting enough postage on it, The card itsself was really small, so smaller than most letters. Maybe it was a combination of all three.

That's so sweet! I wish I could send love letters to my spouse. He lives here with me. But it might be nice to mail him a card anyway! What a surprise when he opens the envelope!

I couldn't believe it when they raised stamps by one cent! Our post office was sold out of the one cent stamps for a whole week after they changed it! I only buy forever stamps now. I believe they are the same price, but they stay good even if they raise the price again.

I dont need to use the postage system for sending any documents. I normally communicate with all my business customers vide email. Incase i need to send any documents i would send the same vide courier service which are much quicker to deliver than the postal service. Even when sending cards on festive occasions i now use ecards than printed ones so internet has largely eliminated the use of the postal system.

That's such a smart thing to do, using ecards for holidays and special occasions! A couple years back I sent an ecard to my best friend for Christmas and she really loved it! Couldn't stop raving about how much she love it. She turned around and sent me an ecard! I thought, how sweet!

I did not use wrong stamps, when I would post letter in the past. I sometimes forgot to stick a postage stamp, at all and posted the letter. Consequently, the receiver of the letter had to pay double the amount of stamp to receive my letter.....LOL! Now sending letters have become extinct. No one write me and vice versa. Telephone and mobile phone has replaced letter writing.

Hello beautyqueen26, I remember when I was a teenager, I purposely posted a letter with 5 cents stamp which definitely not enough. (That time we need to paste 15 cents stamp for each envelope) I did that just to prove what I heard from my friends. They told me if we send a letter using a wrong stamp, the receiver needs to collect and pays the balance of the amount at the post office. That was a 'secret love letter' that I sent to my boyfriend and as he was studying at boarding school, I wanted him to collect the letter by himself. I didn't want the warden to read the letter which is one of the rules in boarding school *laughs*

I usually get my letter weighed at the postage counter and then ask for the necesary stamps. That prevents me from sticking more or less stamps. Funnily, at one time, I was so engrossed in my thoughts, I posted the letter without stamps. Unfortunately, the p erson who receives the letter gets to pay for it if he wants the letter, or its back. Has it ev er happened to you.

It's been a long time since I mailed anything via the post office and I don't remember ever using the wrong stamps. I just let the guy place my stamps for me or I use the metered stamps which does not need me to affix anything.

I've been guilty of not putting enough on a letter I didn't think weighed an ounce, and it was over! Had one returned because of it. I usually try to get mine weighed at the post office, if I am in doubt. But I hate that they think they need to up the cost of stamps every year or so. Seems to be getting closer every year! After awhile, it will be every month. They up the cost of the service and DOWNGRADE their service. It used to be the post offices stayed open from 8 until 5 every day and half a day on Saturday. Now, you find them whenever, and they take 1 1/2 hours for lunch. And they don't want you in there until around 10AM because they are putting up the day's mail. When I was at home,we had a couple who manned our post office. They never fussed about when you came in. They were always there to help you. Now, they aren't even allowed to hand you over your mail from the box if you forget the key. I have an elderly Mother and I had to get her box key in order to get her mail because they won't give it to me, although they all know who I am! And they know she doesn't go to the post office anymore. I have also tacked on a little more in stamps for a big card I was sending. I did send one card once that said it needed more postage and I forgot to put it on there. Thank goodness it went to my brother and he paid the extra. Don't think they would send it now, though.

I have tried sending a mail by post before and it was returned to me because it said that the postage was not enough , I do not send mail by post anymore , now that email is becoming the medium. If I ever try to mail a post again , I will go to the main post office and asks the personnel the exact postage.

About A mouth ago I sent a birthday card to my best friend. I mailed it so she would get it on the day of her B-DAY. The next day, after mailing the card, I was looking in my purse, and I found the stamp. It upset me terribly. We never miss sending a card. Can you believe she got the card on time, with NO POSTAGE ? I was amazed !!!

They make it so hard. They have risen the cost three times in the last three years. And it is never an easy number to remember. They now offer what is called a forever stamp. We bought a bunch when they were at 39 cents. And they never have an expiration do to raising costs. They are always of the current value. That makes it nice. So next time yuo go to buy stamps ask for the forever stamps. Then you will not have to worry about adding additional postage.

I buy the forever stamp there is no amount on them. They are good for one first class stamp no matter how much the price goes up so if postage is 42 cents thats what the forever stamp is worth if it goes up to 46 cents thats what the stamp will be worth. I love these stamps as you dont have to worry about those pesky one cent stamps. Now if my envelope is a bit heavy i will put an extra one on just in case.

Yes--- It's funny-- we put the mortgage in our mailbox with a .41 cent stamp on it- We also put in an envelope with .15 cents and asked for 15 1 cent stamps. And please put 1 on the mortgage. (My sig other did this--- normal people would not have done so).... regardless My daughter said to me about 4 days later- mom there was this envelope in the mailbox with .15 cents in it- The mailman took the mortgage without putting the 1 cent stamp on it- and didn't leave us any. I called the mortgage company to see if they received the payment. They did- and they had a note on the account- postage short. lol--- they paid the penny :)

I use the corrent rate of the stamp. I have a post office right around the corner from me so if I question how much I need to put on I stop in there and have them weigh it and than I know for sure how much I need to put on. I only do this if I have something I am mailing that seems to be heavier than the normal things I mail. Like if I have to mail contracts back to a place in the mail than I go and have the post man weigh it and put the appropriate stamps on it. Or if I am mailing some pictures back to Kentucky I always stop by the post office and have them weigh it and put on the right postage. Otherwise I just put the amount that the post office has designated. I buy my stamps by the book. There are twenty stamps in a book.

I just did it this year. I put two forever stamps on it, but a few days later, i got it returned, said it was not enough. Since then if I sent stuff by mail, I will to post office, fortunately there is post office just in my neihorhood. I do not want to waste time.
