hi all! do you still remember the first time you laid hands on a computer unit? i remember my first time in using the computer. i was in college then, which was about 17 years ago. my freshman year. my schoolpaper editor asked me to edit a manuscript as i was just a newbie then, an assistant. he caught me typing the whole thing on wordstar. yep! we were still using that that program back then. anyway, he tried to control his laughter while he explained to me the beauty of data processing. that i didn't have to retype the whole thing but i could just open the file and edit. and you would think it is a common sense thing now. well, it was not so common then. now don't laugh at me now. how about you? do share your experiences...:)

Hello spoiled311, I started to use computer years ago when I was just a teenager. I can't remember what did I do when the first time I saw a computer and being able to touch it *smiles* But, I was not too far behind compare to my other friends. Last time I just typed and typed whatever I need to and never had a chance to learn it properly. Since I am married to an IT guy, I do feel embarrassed sometimes whenever I don't know how to do a simple thing with my computer. I am still learning and most of the time I get a scold from my husband as I always depend on him!

The first time I saw a computer, mind you saw, not used, I saw a person making some notes on it. And then I thought, how cool it would be to have one for each so that they could directly type and not write. Although now I have understood and prefer writing to typing. The first time I used computer, was in 7th Grade, when we were taken for a computer class. We were taught BASIC, and we were drawing lines and angles and houses and what not, although it seemed dumb then. Thinking back, I feel it was not so bad. I have 2 computers for me now, and I love both of them. bourne

Hmmm. Way back in the late 70s, as part of having me learn all about payroll, I had to not only record the hours of the plumbers working, but also take the records to the main office and enter them on punch cards and put them through the big computer. I sure was glad I didn't have to do that every week - just once to see the whole process. I think we got our first computer at the house - a Tandy/Radio Shack thing with the big floppy disks - in about...1990. My son was commenting on it the other day. No matter what you wanted to do, you had to use the floppies for the programs and for saving documents.

My first time is when I was an elementary student. I don't have anything to do back then except going to the library and relaxing on the reading area, to relieve my need to go to the john(and it's really embarrassing if accidentally you pooped on your pants). So anyways, there was a computer there that has encyclopedia britannica or something like that running. Of course I don't know much about computers then, but that experience was rewarding because I often come to the library then because of the computer(and the relieving thing of course). And I came to know how to use the keyboard, the mouse, what to do when the encyclopedia closed and the thing is brought back to the desktop of windows 95. I became interested to computers at that very young age(well not that young of course) and until now I'm grateful of that because if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have the interest in computers, I would not have chosen Computer Science as a course, and I would not be the person that I am today. Probably I will be interested in chemistry and writing but the computer is by far the one that I am mostly indulged in. And I plan to become a known man in the game development field. Wow, wordstar...that was way back then. You started out early. I envy you. That was for my first experience(and a little elaboration, hehe). Have a nice day.

It's funny that you started this discussion. I remember taking a typing class in high school. (Now they call it keyboarding) The first day of class was a mad dash for one of the 5 electric typewriters! Mrs. Bates would rotate us at the end of each 6 week grading period so that everyone had a chance to use them. My senior year, our English teacher had this electronic processor that you would type into it and it would do spell check for you. Then you plugged it into your electronic typewriter and it would print it out for you. The first real computer I ever got on was in college in 1991. Anyone else remember 3x5 floppy disks?

The first time I used a computer was when I bought my first computer and set it up at home. I already had keyboard skills and I was using a word processor, with diskettes, so data processing was not new to me, but I had never actually touched a computer before and I had to learn everything else for myself. I'm still learning how to do things on my new laptop, but eight years on I know how to do the things I need it for, and I know how to find out about anything I don't know.
