This is mostly another update on Jenny. For those of you who are my newer friends and do not Know who Jenny is, she is our 16 year old daughter. She has cerebral palsy and her legs were always very twisted inwards. She had an operation on June Fifth to straightened her legs. They cut the bones on both legs six inches above the knees and rotated her legs forty degrees outwards. She was only in the hospital for three days before they sent her home and she was confined to a wheelchair and could put no weight on her legs and had immobilization braces on her legs. After only 35 days the doctors decided that she could start putting weight on her legs and started her on intensive physical therapy. I had to take her to Sacramento every week day for three weeks. We would leave the house at 8:30 in the morning. They would put her through all kinds of exercises and stretches and then give her a two hour break and then would start over again. We would get home about 4:30 every afternoon. At the end of the first week she was able to walk using a walker for a limited time each day. During the second week she was given crutches and they removed the braces form her legs and had her walking most of the time but still had to use the wheelchair away from the hospital but did not have to use the braces at all. At the end of the week she was told that she no longer needed to use the wheelchair at all. After being waited on hand and foot for six weeks she was now able to do things on her own. She was able to get dressed, use the bathroom and even take a shower all by herself. Yahoo! Originally she was only supposed to have two weeks of therapy. But because the school systems her start really early they decided to add another week to her therapy to get her ready to go back to school. They taught her how to get through doors, wear a back pack and walk up and down stairs. They even worked with her on her stability. Bumping into her and hitting her so she would learn to not fall if kids did this to her at school. Well! School started on Monday. It was really hard on her. She was so tired and sore when she got home that she just put on a noght gown and went to sleep. The next day was a little better but she had a lot of pain in her hips and legs. Todayt was the third day back at school. What was really cool is that the school security all got together and decided that they would pick her up after every class and take her to the next class. They said they will continue to do this until she doesn't want them to any more. Can yuo believe that they did this? I was totally amazed. So today Jenny is back to her happy self. I really appreciate my dear friends her and all the support that you have given over the last two months. I would always read what you said to Jenny and she would glow with appreciation. I am sorry that I have not been around much in this time. There were occasions I was able to get her but it seemed like for just a short time. I know have all my regular email caught up and am ready to get back to socializing and being here again. Mark

Your daughter must have the patience of a saint. Reading what she had to go through just from the surgery angle of it makes me wonder if she was in a lot of pain and also very surprised that they released her so soon after it. Also all that therapy must have been painful for her, but it sounds like your daughter, Jenny has the fighting spirit in her. I'm so happy to hear how well she is doing now and is happy again especially at school.

Surprisingly she has not had very much pain. On the second day after her surgey they forgot to give her pain medications and it hit the roof. When they asked her what her pain level was on a scale of one to ten she said thirteen. It took almost two hours for it to get better even with the IV pump going. Since then she has only had mild pain but she would get very tired from the therapy.

Wow...this is a very good news. Jenny is a very brave and courageous daughter of yours. I'm so happy for Jenny and your entire family. Her desire to have her normal life back again amidst so much pain is something that is brave and very inspiring to a lot of people who already lost hope. Your daughter is an inspiration to all if us.

While we were going to the therapy I saw so much difference in the kids attitudes and how they healed. The ones that were positive got through it quick and were on ther way while the ones who had a negative attitude progressed very little of the three weeks.

Good news about Jenny and school, and also it is good to hear an encouraging word about the lengths school district employees will go to to help out when it is needed. May you have many more good reports.

Thank you so much. After writing the other blogs on Jenny I came to the realization that not every one who responds knows the whole story so I thought I would go back and add more information with this latest update. She is really awesome and has such a positive attitude that we all should have.

While I didn't have surgery that major, I do know what she went through. I had the tendons above my heel cut, so that my feet would straighten out. I was in a wheelchair for six weeks (I was only 6 years old at the tie) and went through similar therapy, and things worked out fine. I'm happy that hings also worked out for Jenny.

I have seen similar operation watching the discovery health channel. That is what I really expected them to do to Jenny. I thought they would snip the tendions as well as doing the leg rotation. I always wonder why the people who have this done do not suffer for years from the cut tendons. I had a torn rotator cuff and it went untreated for years because I had very stupid doctors and it got progressively worse. It seems the cutting tendons would have the same problems.

She sounds like an amazing girl! I didn't realize how intense the surgery was, and I'm amazed that she's managing so well. I think it's great that school is working so hard to keep her safe until she can get more stable and better on her feet. That's really amazing. I hope she continues to improve and hope that her pain decreases.

I was surprised that the school is helping her so much. If it were up to the counsler nothing would be done,. She is really worthless. Nice to talk to but never does anything. We tried to get a change but the school will not allow it. Every day brings more improvement it is amazing and she is amazing. Tomorrow we have her 60 day post surgery follow up appointment and I know the doctor will be really impressed.
