Here's a true story for you. An 18 year old girl with a mom in rehab and a stepfather in jail. She went to rehab and has been clean for over a year. She is in the house all by herself ..her twin just left for the service. She goes to summer school and to work(full time) so that her family won't loose the house. Her transportation is a bycycle. It takes her over an hour each morning to ride to school and another half to get to work after. Well today she came out of scholl to find hers and a couple of other bikes stolen. The other kids ride their bikes because it's fun but A needs hers. She is a friend of my kids and lives about 70 miles from us. I've been on the phone to every organization I can think to try to get this kid a bike. She doesn't want one she needs one. Does anyone have any idea who we can turn to to get help for this kid. She will not ask for herself. I suggested going to social services bjut it's a hour+ car ride from where she lives and she would have to miss work or school to get there ( would take it 2-3 hours bike ride). Finacially I can not buy a bike. Any ideas? Thanks xoxoxoxoxoxo

Call the tv station, that might be interested in a human interest story like this. I wish I had lots of money, I would buy her a bike. But I can't do it neither. I hope someone helps her with getting a bike, she deserves it.

That is a really good idea too! I've seen ones down here do stories like that and help flooded in for those in need.

One thing that might work would be to go online and find the nearest bicycling club. If you contact them, they might be able to get together a way to get that girl her much-needed bike. Around here, there is a car dealer that collects old bikes from people getting rid of them and fixes them up so they can be given to needy kids. Salvation Army helps in this way, too. Most community-service organizations do these things, too. Try to contact Kiwanis, Optimist, etc. If none of this works, can we get a collection together through myLot? I can't afford much, but there are certainly enough of us to add up to enough for a bike. Let's not let this admirable young lady down!

Raydee! Have you tried freecycle.org? My husbad got rid of good computer equipmet we didn't need, and he got a wheelchair for me to use in AZ, and all ew urnature or te liing room (GOOD STUFF but someone didn't want it anymore so they GAVE IT AWAY) Get on Freecycle, org and tell them what you want, and someone should be able to find one for you that they more han want to give away. Oh yeah, we also got an almost-new vaccume cleaner through Freecycle.

Since she is working, it is possible she may have some money of her own. If so, she could purchase a bike at a yard sale. She could borrow a bike from a friend until she is able to replace hers. She could do house talk to her boss at work and see if her boss would be willing to assist her. The school she attends may also be able to assist her since the bike was stolen from the school property. It may be possible to replace the bike for about $100.00 or less. She could purchase a good bike at the police auction, Wal-mart, yard sales, garage sales, neighbors who have unused bikes in their garages. Her twin may be able to send her some money when her twin gets paid. If you and her twin and her other friends all chip a little in, the total amount could be helpful to her.

You might also check with the local churches and VFW as they sometimes help with situations of this nature. They like to encourage our youth to do good.

I'm too far away to help at all...270 miles from you, but the freecycle idea might work. Search for one in her county and town. If she was closer to the one I belong to...which is way north of me but probably still too far, I could almost guarantee someone would have a bike for her, plus that area has a barter-cycle where people can get things for cheap of for trade. I'll send you a friend request though so you can PM me a better location and I'll help you look too.

Raydene - join Freecycle for your area in groups.yahoo.com and put in a request for a bike. Explain why you're asking and I'll be almost anything you get at least 2 offers. It's a great program!

HI raydene, WOw! this is very sad, does she have grandparents who can help her this time? or any close relatives? I admire her courage to live life and I hope she will remain positive in these trials in her life!

I'm guessing she made a police report and I'm guessing your local paper will list the report in the paper? If you can contact the newspaper and let them know what her situation is, usually they are more than happy to print the story and people usually respond through the paper. Good luck and I hope she gets some help.

Take up a collection for her at church? Call a Goodwill or St. Als and see about getting her one from there? Call the newspaper?

raydene hi here in the US the police often take upo collectons to help buy bikes for kids who have had their bikes stolen specially for circumstances like the one you have related and maybe that would be a good place to ask at your local police station and explain why its really such a need, also maybe local churches could help. Also places like Kiwanas. hope this helps.

Do you have yard sales where you live where you could get one for cheap? I have seen bike for about $10. Try salvation army? united way? I would even call the local A.A. program and explain and see if anyone has a bike to give away.
