Brain Fried - I'm taking the night off!

Brain Fried - Burnout and brain fried
United States
August 5, 2008 6:57pm CST
I have come to the conclusion that I have spent entirely too much time on the internet this week. I've spent so much time on myLot and a couple of other forums of which I am a member, then doing some research which could possibly land me an actual good paying "at home" job ($25 an hr for about 3 hours a day), plus working on an outline for a book I'm planning to write, those amongst several other things going on in my life right now... I have a serious case of burnout. My wrists and hands hurt from typing so much, my back is killing me from sitting in one position for too long and my eyes are burning like I've been sitting too close to a campfire. My brain is so overloaded that I can't think of a single discussion to start other than to complain. So I've done my complaining.. I am taking the rest of the night off and do nothing but watch a couple of tv shows, cuddle with my hubby and play some cool new games we got last week. In other words, relax and have some FUN! With any luck, my mind will be a little clearer and my body will be well rested enough by tomorrow to come back and be happy to be here without the urge to complain or bit someone's head off. Do you ever get that condition I like to call "brain fried"?

Thanks Lakota my friend. I wish I could take more time off away from this darned computer. It feels like half my life revolves around it anymore. Work, the band websites, many of my friends, most of my family.. ugh everything is on this darn thing. LOL

I sometimes turn into a computer zombie, but most of the time, I enjoy it. I would be interested in that kind of an "at home" job myself. Any pointers to look for one? You will be much better off when you are rested.

I am sure you are up to the challenge. I know about learning new software. Sleeping on it will help, I am sure.

Hi GG! This job offer came from a girl I used to work with several years ago. She's opened up a screen printing shop of her own and needs someone to do the graphics for her. She knows I used to work a lot with graphics (mostly photo editing) so she wanted to know if I was interested. I am, but I've never done the kind of graphics she's talking about and I've never worked with the software she uses. So I had to do some research. I'm sure I can do it but I have to learn exactly WHAT to do and learn the software. Bad thing is she needs someone RIGHT NOW. I don't know if I can learn it in time so she's going to continue looking for someone while I try to teach myself how to do what she needs. Whoever gets there first wins! LOL! Thanks so much for stopping by hon.

Hehehe..you call it brain fried I call it brain fart..LOL Yup, I've been there loads of times. Being the slightly neurotic, perfectionist overachiever I often get that way. I haven't done any in awhile (that is articles), but my "schedule" pretty much is to write an article, then come here, maybe scan photos, retouch them in photoshop, AND try to write a bit in one of my novels..oh, and of course be here...LOL....Right now I'm taking it relatively easy especially tonight...I have to force myself to end things early tonight. I'm a confirmed night owl and don't go to bed until rather late and get up late...well, got a call today that my new mattress that I ordered is to be delivered anytime between 9 in the morning til one in the afternoon tomorrow..groan..that means forcing myself to go to bed earlier to get up early... I even took off from assembling my new captain's bed...it's almost done anyway...I have quite the job cut out for me with all this....including cleaning up good in the bedroom, dismantle the old bed...so almost everything else has been put on hold for awhile while I work on all this.

Hey Pye... Ya that's my biggest problem. I too have that "slightly neurotic, perfectionist overachiever" mentality too. Problem is the body doesn't want to cooperate. Way too much going on at once and life isnt' perfect dammit! How dare it not be the way I want it to be! LOL Crazy uncontrollable things happen and their just isn't a darn thing I can do about it. Along with all the regular daily stuff going on, my mother-in-law is in the hospital and everybody is now trying to find her an "assisted living" apartment. The guy she's been living with for the last 13 yrs won't take care of himself and won't let anyone else take care of him, won't take his meds and won't eat unless someone is there to cook for him, he's 94 yrs old and refuses to leave his house. His family isn't helping at all! Nothing I can do about it, I'm 500 miles away! Last Friday I found out that one of my best friends had another heart attack... the third in 3 months. I didn't know anything about this one until she stopped by to tell me. I find out last night that another very dear friend has colon cancer and went in for surgery Monday. Nobody bothered to call me. It doesn't look good and she may not survive much longer. I just saw her a couple weeks ago and she was fine, so this came out of the blue. I'm not feeling great because I got my sandal straps caught in my mouse cord Saturday and took a major fall to the floor and twisted my ankle to boot. To say the least with the Fibro and the arthritis I'm still sore as hell from head to foot. Now I'm getting these bizarre cramps in my legs above the ankle, must have pulled the muscle. That's just THE STUFF, lots of minor stuff going on too. My brain is kind of hitting the wall at the moment. Ugghhh. It's too bad we can't turn our brains off once in a while or at least the "worrying" part of our brains. I think I'm done with my rant for now.... LOL Good luck with the bed! And thanks for stopping by hon!

Hey craft, I hear ya! I do know exactly how you feel. I'm kinda in the same place you are. I also spend way too much time here and looking for a "good paying" job on the internet. By the way if you find one please clue me in and I will be more than happy to do the same. I have been researching it seems like forever! So far I have no real prospects to speak of. I am tired of sitting at the computer staring at this screen. I do hope you enjoyed your night off! I hope you return tomorrow well rested and ready to write and hopefully with your brain unfried! Talk to you then!Regards, Opal

Hi Opal! I'd love to clue you in about a good paying internet job. Unfortunately the job offer I got is local. A girl I used to work with years ago needs some graphics work done for her screen print shop. I don't know the program she uses or the exact type of graphics she needs done but I'm sure I can do it. I just need to actually work with it and figure out how the software works. I did some research on the internet about the program and I'm familiar with similar software but hers is a lot more complicated! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the encouragement hon!!

Oh yes, I have had that condition. I usually try to take time everyday now though to do something I just enjoy doing. My biggest problem when I'm on the computer for a long time though is my back hurting.

I know we all need breaks. I have to take breaks because of my wrists and eyes. I always enjoy getting back on line. Sometimes you just feel like getting some excercise or getting some things done. I hope you enjoy all your time off relaxing.

Yeah I know what you mean! I get like that myself sometimes and you just need to chill out and do nothing even if you are just laying on the couch and watch a movie so your brain has a little time to slow down and not work overtime so i hope you do have fun and enjoy you time offline... :)

I got up one morning with bloodshot eyes from being at the computer way too much,so cutting back. Biking, cleaning house, etc. afraid I have rather been neglecting things around here...

Well...i can advice you to have an enough time and schedule in taking up online business...having extra income is not BAD but forcing yourself in working especially in the front of computer is really BAD to your health especially when the radiation of the computer is burning up your BRAINS! Have a nice extra income ahead.

I've felt that way many times. There are days when I have to stop because I really can't see the screen anymore. A piece of advice that I've had reinforced by other published authors, do your outline, but don't feel totally locked into it. Most stories have a life of their own and will go in directions you didn't plan.

That doesn't happen to me simply because I make it a point of getting up and moving away from the computer after about a hour of being on it. I take a fifteen to twenty minute break and then I come back. I do that so that I don't get my brain fried. I also do take a whole day away from the computer.

Well, sunshine it looks like you've found the perfect solution to internet burnout, congratulations on being able to stop whenever you want to. I don't always get that luxury. As I said in my original post.. those amongst several other things going on in my life right now. My internet burnout was only a part of a bigger picture. To say the least with the Fibro and the arthritis I'm still sore as hell from head to foot. So I'm very glad that doesn't happen to you. I'm not so fortunate.

I took yesterday off as I spent the day outdoors where the sun was to bright to look at a screen. This was on the heels of have been on the road close to a week. although I did check my private account for e-mails once each evening, I managed the rest of the time just fine without being connected--it was kind of fun actually. I think in future I will take more days off from the computer. Yesterday I fried my brain by being enjoying the desert in August. Usually it is dry heat here but this is more or less still "monsoon season" so we had well over 100 all day and muggy. Good think our ice maker was working!

I've been thinking about doing the same thing, just take a day or two a week and stay off the internet except checking e-mails. I've got so many things going on at once and several other things I want to do but don't seem to have the time. If I'd get off this computer once in a while I'd have more time! Seems so simple but not always easy. Sort of like trying to break a habit... LOL.

Hi craftcatcher, Yes we can spend too much time on our computer and its not only the back strain it the eyes strain, I do spend a lot of my time on Mylot and when I get too tired I rest a bit like watching a bit of tv or just lie back on my sofa close my eyes and then I am back on Mylot. Just rest up. Tamara

hi craft..........been there, done that. you do have to reach the point to tear yourself away before they have to surgically remove you. by doing it yourself there will be no need for intervention as well. thus saving a ton of money. watch some tv.

I feel very much like this! Staring at a computer screen can't possibly be good for our eyes... I do think it would be a good idea take a day off now and again. Also because I think coming back after a break would bring fresh new ideas to the table. Sometimes writing on these websites gets pretty draining at times, trying to figure out cleaver things to say. Best of luck with your day off!
