There are Hawks in my Yard

Maybe this won't sound very unusual to some of you, but I have never had any encounters with Hawks in my lifetime.
But it seems that a few have moved into my neighborhood and are after the sweet little birds that used to sing me awake in the mornings and would eat from my feeder and bathe in my birdbath.
Now there is no more singing, no more eating or bathing in the birdbath.
I can still hear the birds about a block away. But they won't come in my yard because there are hawks waiting for them in the trees.
I can't stand watching them swoop down trying to catch things.
They even chase after the squirrels. I don't think they can catch a squirrel??
They must just be chasing them away?
They are pretty to look at, but I don't like what they are doing.
I got a picture of one in a tree.
Sorry I couldn't get any closer and I could only get it from behind.

Yea, I didn't think they seemed very nice.
Nice to look at, but not nice to have around....like some men I know. Lol!

Hawks only do what comes natural to them.
I love to watch out for hawks while I am on my drives out in the country. I will usually see them in trees (most visible when there are no leaves) or on top of utility poles.
By the way, hawks can catch squirrels. Just might not have been lucky at it so far.

I'm glad I didn't see the hawk catch the squirrel he was chasing!

I do not know for sure where you live, but I am wondering if you in fact have Mississippi Kites, a predatory bird that is smaller than a hawk but is quite aggressive. I do not know how to frighten them off, but you could call your local park department and try to find out. We had this kind of bird nesting near the library last year and they attacked people, to protect the nest. I will look at your picture. If I were you, I would call some agency and see what my next step would be.

I live in PA.
My son said one swooped right over his head and almost came onto the porch one day.
I'll talk to the neighbors and see if they've been having problems with them (although all the trees are in MY yard.)
I'll see if they know who to call about it.
Thanks!

Hi momalisa,
I have seen once in our area and it scares also all the birds that time...My husband saw a hawk also catching the squirrel and he got it really!
ANyway, I am happy this time that the birds are now enjoying as usual, maybe those hawks found another place to hangout with!

It would be fun to see a piece here in the Philippines. I haven't seen one and we have lots of maya birds all around the country. The Hawk will have a great time once he decides to take a piece of cake from our place.

I never heard of a maya bird. I'll check for pictures online.
Thanks for your comment.

I can imagine that to have a bird like that in your garden would be pretty amazing. But as you say they do catch other smaller birds and so the birds will not come near which is a shame. I am not sure if they eat squirrels or not, but I guess they would. It is horrible to see them chasing after the other birds though.

Yea, It was amazing when I first saw them flying around until I discovered what they were actually doing.

Hawks are nasty mother scratchers! They have superb eyesight and can probably see you reading my response. :) You might take your bird feeder down for a little while that way you don't contribute involuntarily to a hawk's dinner.

Oh yea, Thanks. I actually haven't filled the feeder since someone on mylot told me not to feed them in the summertime.
But they would still come and hang out in the trees until the hawks came.
I just hope I never actually see a hawk eating a bird or any other animal!

That's to bad they chased off your other birds, we don't have hawks normally in my area mostly in the country side. I have seen hawks swoop down and catch pretty big animals. My aunt has them in her yard and they eat all of her bullfrogs. Hopefully someone will be able to tell you how to make them move on.
