Have you ever been lost at night, when driving ?

A friend of mine had a related discussion and it brought back these memories. A million years ago, before cell phones, on one of hubby's duty nights, an old friend came into the San Diego area, I got lost going back home, at 2:00 am. I lived in Imperial Beach, this friend was visiting friends in the Escondido area. We had all the highway interchanges and everything written down, but there was a cloverleaf where you needed to move immediately left,or you would go around again, and I guess a stalker who was determined I would not get over. I went around that cloverleaf at least three times, with him blocking me three times, then just went ahead and got off. Nothing was open in National City at that time of night. I do not even remember how I finally got home.I remember finding a streetlight and parking under it to calm down. There was no way to call anyone, and no one to call. I think that was one of my scariest drives ever. Do you have a story to tell?

Gardengerty, hi. I hate getting lost stories. I would have been terrified if I was you. I never met anyone who deliberately blocked me from my turn. That's creepy. My story? - I knew I was night blind, but I had no idea how blind I was until driving back to my apartment at 10pm. I take an exit off highway 81, and it's a truck stop exit. When you get to the very bottom, with nowhere else to go, that's my left turn. I think there are four left hand turn lanes before you each the bottom of the hill. The lights were blinding me, and I turned into an off-ramp by mistake right as a truck was thundering down. I had just enough room to scoot my Z28 over into the cinders on the side of the road. I was so scared, I froze up. A very nice gentleman in a pick-up truck stopped and told me I needed to back down right then. He knew I was terrified, and waited at the end of the ramp for me. Once I got to the final left hand turn I was screaming "I can't do this; I can't see" all the while knowing I was the only person who could get me home. The next day, my right ear was bleeding, I think I ruptured an eardrum from all the screaming. No night driving for me, no way. travel lightly.

Glad it did not turn out any worse. Sometimes night driving is harder for me than other times. I have some real sympathy for you. My aunt went off and entrance ramp on a highway once with me, mom and my cousin in the car. In broad daylight. That was not real fun, either.

Not lost, but I have fallen asleep while driving and woke and realized that I was on the wrong freeway! And oddly enough it was on the 15 north from San Diego! I was supposed to take the exit to get on the 15N and fell asleep and didn't make the merge and ended up on the 215 instead of the 15. At first I didn't notice it, but then started seeing and not seeing (it was at night) things that I knew weren't on the 15 and I kept going until I saw a sign that said I was on the 215 and I realized that I had fallen asleep! After that, i was so totally awake the rest of the way home!!

I did that in the Oklahoma City area. With my two kiddoes sleeping in the back. I think God watched over us. I remember being two exits away from my exit, then I woke up about four exits past it. Stayed on the road really well though.

I went for miles. Talk about in the hands of God! Just goes to show the subconscious does as much or more than the conscious!

This reminds me of my scary drive. I was in a new work van. It was late, I was out of town, about an hour away. It was snowing like crazy, I was alone, the streets were slippery. I put on the brakes gently, all of a sudden the van started jerking and shaking. It scared the daylights out of me. It happened a couple of times. It turns out it was the antilock brakes coming on, the street was covered with snow and it was slippery and there wasn't any traction. I hadn't drove a vehicle with those kinds of brakes before.

Yes, that kind of experience is scary. Been there, done that. I like when the company buys new vehicles, and trusts me to drive them, but I also feel very nervous about caring for them.

I got lost just the other evening. I decided, after dropping a friend off home, that I would use the unmade road across the mountains to get home rather than back up to the tarmac roads. Of course, I wasn't 100% sure of the route as there are no signs up there but I thought I'd recognise it as I went along. It got dark whilst I was up there though! Thankfully, I had one of our guests in the car with me as well as the kids, so he kept me sane as I belted along all these little roads that looked exactly the same. Eventually we did come out at somewhere I recognised, and I can now pinpoint where I went wrong. I think next time, I'll ignore the short cut though. I had no mobile signal up there, and I dread to think how long I'd have had to wait before anyone found me if the car had developed a problem.

About 9 years ago, we had all gone to a family get together in Atlanta. We would normally leave my Aunt's coming home. But this time, we were at her daughter's new place. We left rather late. And we thought we'd remember which exit to take to get back on the right Interstate leading home. Instead, we went straight through downtown Atlanta. We passed the exit that we were supposed to get off that highway and just kept going. It took us the long way around, but we finally found the right highway and got safely on our way. But night time is no time to be in downtown Atlanta when you aren't familiar with the streets.

I can honestly say that I have never been lost driving. I have a great sense of direction and usually get directions for my destination so I can avoid being lost etc. I have at points taken the wrong turn and got sidetracked, but never totally lost. Nowdays with the internet and it's maps it is too easy to NOT get lost. Also GPS systems are here and those help one not to get lost as well most times. I have OnStar with a phone built into my cars radio so I can use a phone easily for this situation if it occurs. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

The story I have is not so dramatic it is boring actually. We went to see visit friends that we had not seen in awhile that lived another city and they were expecting us for dinner, now we had been to their home several times so we knew how to get there, we thought. Fortunately we went early to have a chat and we could get some sightseeing done. When we arrived at the cut off we were expecting to take it was missing and the more we tried to find it the more lost we got, we ended up in the city centre with heavy traffic heavy rain and tons of new one way roads. In one road the no entry sign was invisible and we entered a lane of oncoming traffic fortunately, the traffic was stopped at a light and we were able to turn the car around. When we finally got to a a well known landmark and from there were able to get to their home nearly 2 hours late. We found out there had been a major remodelling of the access around and in the city and were before there were two cut offs, previously we used the second, the first cut off was now used and was even quicker as the road had been changed. There have been other times mostly due to faulty information but that is the one I remember the best.

Yes, I've gotten lost while driving at night. LOL I had gone to the airport to pick up my new puppy. I was so excited to get her! Even though I had the directions written down on how to get back home from the airport, I took the wrong freeway entrance! This was the first time I ever went to the airport here in Sac, so I was a bit lost, to say the least. I knew I took the wrong freeway as soon as I saw the first sign available. I got off of the freeway at the next exit. I would have gotten back on the freeway in the direction I came from, but there was one problem. There wasn't any entrance to the freeway where I was! So I drove in the dark (it was about 10pm at this point) hoping I'd find something familiar. And to make it worse I found out I was driving on a levee road! The only reason I knew this was because I saw something sparkling along the side of the road and when I looked over I saw water, and a lot of it. I kept on driving forward, even though I had no idea where I was. Eventually I found something familiar, and to my surprise I was in downtown Sacramento. I was so happy and relieved that I was still in Sacramento! LOL So I found a street I was familiar with, got back on the freeway (the correct one) and drove home. What should only be about a 20 minute drive home, turned into over a 2 hour drive home that night. LOL

Oh yeah I have one but it was during the day. I was just a kid at the time, I'd say either 19 or 20 and was driving an hour away to visit my boyfriend at the time who was recovering from a truck fire and on the way back I had stopped to get something to eat and had my younger sister and brother with me and asked for directions in which the gal gave the opposite way that I needed to go and trying to get turned around, I ended up on another highway. I was so lost that I didn't know where I was going nor did I know how to get back but some how we managed to find our way back and onto the correct highway and we got home. We were about an hour later than we should've been but we got home safely and that's all that matters.

When we had our first car and my husband first time to drive around the city, he have a lot lost driving episodes. He decided to bought a map and yet he still losses his sense of direction. I guess he is geographically impaired. It's always up to me to get him on track. Lucky for us we never yet experienced really losing in some places never heard.
