I was scheduled to work last night.....or was I?

Yesterday, I did my usual routine stuff...check my email, come to mylot, did my Intro to Online Learning chapter, went to bed and got my sleep in, got back up and got ready for work. I left for work around 8:30 last night so that I could start my shift at 9 o'clock. When I swiped my badge to clock in, the time clock beeped at me. "You are not scheduled" Huh? I could have sworn I was supposed to work last night. I even have my weekly schedule written down in a little notebook. I went to the schedule board to double check. Sure enough, I was not scheduled. Boy, did I ever feel like an idiot!! I'm sure that I am not alone though. Has anyone ever done that? Thought you had to be at work and then it turns out that you didn't have to be?

No, but I did have a call at home one afternoon telling me I SHOULD have been at work. It turned out that they'd changed the rota - after I'd left work so I didnt know they'd swapped my day off.

Oh man! Not knowing that you had to be at work would not be a good thing. Something like that could affect a person's attendance record at work. I bet it is included in the employer's policy that it is the employee's responsibility to check in to see if there has been a change in schedule, too.

Luckily, my manager just said that it was probably her fault, not to worry and just go in on the shift I thought i was scheduled for. I've always done any extra shifts she's asked me to do (except for this week but she knew I had other stuff to deal with before she asked)

It happens to us all. I call it being on auto pilot. We are creatures of our routine. I have been driving with my hubby. When suddenly I realize he is driving to work. I say "honey where are you going?" He sees he is on"auto pilot". We usually laugh when something like that happens.

Yes, many of us are creatures of routine. The thing is, Monday is usually not in my routine of being off work. I have been so used to being off work on Tuesday and Wednesday and not Monday and Tuesday, that I just had that "auto pilot" thing going on. Yeah, you gotta laugh at things like that sometimes. If you didn't, life would be really dull, wouldn't it?

I think that may have happened to me a few times in the past, most likely due to a rotating work weeks.

Yeah, it could be. I think I had just turned around the day that I was to work and not to work. That can happen pretty easily. When I was working at the store in another town, I started to write down the schedule of the person that was posted above me.

I can't remember that I ever did that because my jobs were usually the usual Mon. - Fri 8 to 5 type. However, I have been ready for piano students to come in for lessons only to realize they had rescheduled that day for one reason or another - so, yes, I could say I showed up to my own in-home piano studio to work when I wasn't scheduled! ha, ha.

Yeah, it could throw you off when you have a set time for your student only to have them do a reschedule.
