Am I a Crack Pot?

... for baking in my crock pot? In another discussion of mine last night, someone mentioned apple crisp and I offered that I loved a simple recipe that I found to make in a crock pot. Several people wanted to hear more about it, so I thought I'd share. It's actually called Apple Ginger Crumble, but it's all the same to me: 5 cooking apples, peeled and sliced 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packeed 1/2 cup flour 3/4 cup rolled oats 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 5 tablespoons butter Lightly butter the crockpot and place apple slices on the base Combine sugar, flour, rolled oats, ginger and nutmeg and cut in butter, using a pastry blender or knife. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples. Cover and cook on low 5 to 6 hours. I don't usually measure the spices, I just add until it smells good. I usually use cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice as they're all pretty much the same, but the bit of ginger really does add something nice to it. I also don't wait until 5 or 6 hours. It might be more crunchy at the top if you wait that long, but I've tested it after just a couple of hours and the apples are more than cooked so I usually just break out the vanilla ice cream and have at it. No one ever complains, so I guess it's ok. I never would have thought about doing something like this in a crock pot, but a friend shared it with me some time ago and it really is good, and saves having to heat up the whole kitchen with the oven, as well as saving on the electric bill. Do you have other things that you've adapted to cook or bake in a crock pot that are a bit outside of the norm?

I don't cook that much at present myself..mostly grilled stuff on the baby "George",a Pot of soup occasionally,Muffins,Waffles,Eggs...but I hear a crockpot is a good economical way of cooking, and is very versatile and can be adapted to other stuff..I'll probably look into getting one at some stage! I do Love apple Pie or Crumble, that sounds like a good apple recipe! Enjoy!

It is good, and really no different than what you'd do in the larger oven, without all the heat.

Oooh I have made something similar to this before now and I know that it is really yummy! I absolutely love apples in puddings and this one is great with ice cream but I am a custard lover personally so I get mine with custard! I think that I only used cinnamon and nutmeg in mine though.

Try the ginger, you might like it. I think most anything is good with ice cream or homemade whipped cream on it.

There is a hash brown casserole, with ham and sour cream and cheese that we make, and it is really good. I want to point out for other users that this is the way to include a recipe in a post, by making a discussion about it, not just sayig,"Here is the recipe". This is one I will save, because apple deserts are really yummy and healthy and the oats and spices are as well. All favorites at our house, and not something I will make in the summer, usually. You just changed my mind.

That's why I did it this way, and not just to get the recipe out there either. I am always interested in what others have done that might be similar. I'd love to have the hash brown recipe of yours.

My casserole is up as a discussion now. Next I will get out the Boston Brown Bread recipe.

How did I miss this answer? If Boston Brown Bread is what I'm thinking, I absolutely love it! We had it occasionally growing up, usually with baked beans (which I didn't like at the time). I never like the bread with the raisins, though. I need to find a good recipe, because I don't think Tom has ever had it, and I know he'd love it.

I don't cook anything outside the norm in the crockpot, but I'm going to try your recipe! I was looking for rice pudding recipe and I found one that was done in the crock pot. I haven't tried it yet. We have Hoss's restaurant here, I'm not sure how far spread it is in the US. They have this reallly good rice pudding, so I'm on a search to find a recipe close to it. Thanks for the apple recipe!

I've lived in several different areas of the country and have never heard of Hoss. What type of restaurant is it? I'm not a fan of rice pudding either, but I know others rave about it. I might have to give in and try making my own sometime - I know my husband loves it.

Mmmm, that sounds so good. I have to try that recipe. Do you use a regular sized crockpot (2 1/2 qt) for this? The reason I ask is I have several sizes and one is only 1 qt size. It seems small, but is the perfect size for just the two of us for most things. I am like you in that I rarely measure spices, just throw them in until it smells or tastes right.

I use a regular crock pot, but it doesn't even come close to filling it up, maybe even halfway, so you could probably get away with using the smaller one for this. In fact, half the time I don't really measure, I just add the apples, mix the rest of the stuff and toss it all in. It's not an exact thing, like baking a cake would require.

MMMM Yum! That sounds so good! I agree a little ginger just really perks up the spices. I used to cook in a restaurant and somehow, I got elected as the alternate pie maker when the regular one was off. I used the restaurant's recipes for everything, but I'm one of those people who just has to add a little sump'in! Everybody LOVED my apple pies. I never told anyone that I added two shakes of ginger to the spice mix. Yeah! I'm bad. But the customers loved me.

I've cook in my crock pot a lot of times. Mostly for supper; like roast, chili, spaghetti, you know just your basic every day meals; but I have never heard of cooking deserts in crock pot. Your recipe for Apple ginger crumble sounds delicious, and I'm just going to have to try it.

I like apple crisp and I could make it in a crockpot. This would make more than we could eat at one time, but would be good for a family and also if our tree had a lot of apples. It did not have many this year. I have cooked a pot roast, and chili con carne, made chicken soup, and made a stew in the crockpot, but usually it is just in winter. It is way too hot to cook anything that takes a while. I will copy this recipe. It sounds good, but I will use cinnamon except for nutmeg.

I usually don't measure the spices and all anyway, I just add what smells good. But the ginger really is a nice mix to a standard apple crisp. I've refrigerated leftovers and they're still good.

They sure do. I don't think I'd ever made anything with ginger before but I was pleasantly surprised and have used it in other things since.

I made bread pudding in the crock pot before. It turned out really good. I made a vanilla sauce to go over it. Yours sounds good.

It is actually the first and only time I have ever eaten bread pudding. I always thought it sounded gross. I have never eaten rice pudding. It does not even sound good.

That sounds delicious! I'll make it for my dad this weekend, he's gotten very picky about eating but loves apples and applesauce. I don't use my crock as much now that it's just me here at home but it's good for lots of things like cooking chili and spaghetti sauce.

It really is good and I'm sure he'll love it. I don't bother with exact measurements on most any of it, because it's not like a cake that needs certain things to rise or set or anything.

I think that recipe sounds absolutely delicious Ldyjarhead! Man... you are getting me so hungry for sweets, first brownies and now Apple Ginger Crumble!! YUM! :) I have never actually cooked anything outside of the norm in a crock pot before. The only thing I usually cook in a crock pot is Chili or a stew. I used to have two crock pots but now do not own any. We sold them two moves ago. Once we get settled into our new apartment next week I am going to have to invest in another one. You are so right about them saving from using the oven... not only to help save money on the electric or gas bill but also, like to mentioned, to avoid heating up the whole house, especially during the summer months when keeping cool is top priority. With us being back in Virginia now, it does get quite warm & toasty. I prefer it on the cooler side, especially indoors. I will keep my eye open for more of your crock pot recipes! Thanks!

Thx Ldyjarhead for voting me as best response! :) We are just getting settled into our new place. We moved in last week. And, we finallllyyy got hooked back up online, as well as cable & phone service yesterday. We are extremely happy about that. I hope to be able to spend more time online now. The more settled we get, the more time I will have again for things like this. Hope you have a terrific holiday weekend!

Oh wow. This recipe really sounds great! I'm definitely going to have to make up a batch of this. I have a nice recipe book that has some breads and desserts in it. I'll have to get another crock pot so that I can cook a meal in one and the dessert in the other.

It was really simple and quick, and just as good as any you'd bake in the oven. This doesn't fill up the whole crock pot, though, so even a small one would work for this recipe.

I love to cook in a crockpot, but I haven't found any recipes for anything other than what is normally cooked in a crockpot. Do you have any links that I could go to so I can find some different things to try?

I have seen a lot of recipes for cooking baked goods in a crock pot - even a cake pan thing made for the crock pot. I am going to try your recipe cause I am in the mood for desert and don't feel like heating up my house for a pie. Do you have the foreman grill with the plates on it? I bet you could make apple crumble in that too. May even be lighter on the electric bill.

No, I don't have a Foreman at all, never saw much need for one. Good idea, though!

I do something similar to that in the regular oven. That recipe of yours is another reason for me to get a slow cooker.... The only trouble is that I live alone and I tend to eat everything I cook all at once...I'm the size of a house. I'll have to concentrate on putting leftovers into containers straight away and when cool, popping them into the freezer. BTW, my recipe doesn't have the rolled oats but sometimes I use dessicated coconut in the topping...YUMMEH!

It's just Tom and I here and I'm home all day so I have the same problem. Even if I DO put things in the refrigerator or freezer, there is no one here to chastise me as I go to the kitchen and open it.

I adore my crockpot. It's so easy just to throw everything in it and let it simmer for a few hours. It limits the amount of mess in the kitchen. Instead of numerous pots and pans, one crock pot is all I have to clean when the meal is over. And it makes the house smell so yummy too! I've made several different kinds of desserts in mine. I've made Caramel Rolls, upside down cake, coffee cake, even cheesecake.
