WhooHoo Jamaica Mon!

Several years ago I had the privilege of living in Jamaica. I found the people warm, friendly and everyone wanted to marry me and move to Canada. LOL
Today I witnessed a triumph for that tiny tropical paradise that sent my heart soaring.
I've been following the Olympics and this morning my television screen showed me something so outstanding that it had me out of my seat and cheering.
Yussein Bolt (excuse the spelling) ran the Men's 100 metre race in under TEN seconds, smashing world and Olympic records to bits. He came in at 9.68 seconds even though his left toe dragged off the mark and nearly brought him to his knees.
So whoohoo Jamaica for earning your first Gold Medal in this event in the history of the games!
WhooHoo Jamaica for having the fastest man in the world!
What a boon and boost for your athletes and your economy this is going be.
Be proud - and give the guy a national holiday!

Congratulations Jamaica and Usain Bolt! That is wonderful. I am sure this athelete, Usain Bolt, is so proud of his accomplishment and all of the hard work has paid off. Bolt will go down in the Guiness Book of World Records and in Olympic History for this!

Way to go! I am sure his family and friends are very happy too!

That is wonderful for Jamaica and for the athlete himself. I have not been watching the olympics much this year. I am glad you saw this and reported it to us.

I am proud of them and any nation as an idividual when they accomplish such a feat. Hooray for them. Yes, they should do something for this young man. He will make the place famous.
It's funny I have told my friend many times I want to take a vaction to Jamaica. I told her the only thing is she may be coming home alone unless she decides to stay too. I told her when I go I'd probably wind up staying since I want to run away from home and start new and that is where I want to go. She only laughed, I told her I was serious. She wasn't so much laughing anymore cause she knows all of my problems and she knows that many times I just need a break.
I still want to go to Jamaica, and I still may wind up staying there and starting a small business there just to keep me going.

Living there, I found out I was allergic to the tropical sun! lol Broke out in 'fever' blisters all over. I was probably the only person to spend nearly two years in the tropics and not come home with a tan! LOL

If you can stand the heat and humidity and sweat running down your body 24/7, you'll love it there! LOL It's a lovely place really. There is a place called Fern Valley. The road runs along an old river bed under overgrown and intertwined trees and vegetation and it's like driving through a living tunnel. At the end is Fern Valley and when I first came out into it I was stunned at how much it looked like rural Canada. What a treat!

I'll help you out on the spelling there Sparks, it's Usain.
His run was absolutely phenomenal and he will definitely be a hero in Jamaica no doubt about it! What an awesome athlete.
My congrats go out to Usain Bolt (what a fitting last name!) and Jamaica for going GOLD.

I saw this race tonight. I am glad I didn't read this earlier because it would have spoiled it for me!
The only thing that I wish was that he would have ran at his full potential for the whole race instead of slowing down and celebrating before even crossing the finish line. I would have liked to see how fast he really could have made it!
Though the race was exciting; we were screaming for our boy Michael Phelps in our house. He is amazing. 8 out of 8 gold medals and 7 world records.
I don't know how these mothers can keep it together. I would be a sobbing mess if it were my child! Shoot, I have to hold back tears when my boys are playing Little League! LOL

I can understand where you are coming from. However, I do think that he should have kept pushing himself at the end. Even if he didn't see anyone coming to challenge him, he should have pushed just to see what record he could set. He did great, he pulled out ahead of everyone. He got the gold and the record. I can't really say anything truly negative about his performance. I just wish he'd kept running instead of opening his arms before the finish line.

He's also relatively new to this degree of competition too. So I don't really blame him for conserving himself at the end. His coaches should be addressing this issue with him too and apparently they are not. The Jamaican lifestyle is very very laid back. To me, who has lived there, I found his finish to the race rather typical of the Jamaican attitude of, job got done, now I can relax mon! lol

Well, I am watching the Jamaicans run again. But Bolt has another one to worry about. AND, he just lost to Powell. Man, he sprinted out so fast, he set a new world record of 9.68!! Man, those guys are so fast!! If you aren't watching, you should have seen his family, especially his Mother, when it was over. She didn't want to let him go!

Which race are you watching Barb? Bolt won the Gold in the 100m this morning with a time of 9.68. Powell was in that race, but I don't think he won a medal. Are you watcing a rerun of this mornings race?

I saw a race this morning, but this one was shown tonight. I had recorded it and just watched it. I guess America is slow in showing the runs! It could have been just a preview this morning they showed, and I thought it was another race tonight. They have really messed up with the way they've shown the Olympics on NBC. The only one I've really been able to keep up with was Michael Phelps who did win his 8th medal tonight and broke the record off Mark Spitz.

It's a lovely country. American resorts have taken over most of the coastal towns though and it's lost a lot of it's charm from when I was there. It really was good to see Bolt best everyone else with such ease and speed though.

There were several men from smaller countries in the final. I was hoping for Jamaica 1st, 2nd and 3rd but it was not to be. Think I am correct that Powell is from Jamaica too and the runner in lane 2. Another small country got 2nd (Trinidad and Tobago - I think) but USA managed 3rd. Well they do always have more talent and money to throw at these events. Come on the small countries!!
Apparently the Irish boxer had to pay for all of his own expenses so nearly could not make it to the Olympics.

Yes Powell is Jamaican to and has been doing well in his own specialties. Don't know about lane 2 though. And isn't it a shame that some Olypians don't have the backing and support they deserve to become the best in their sport? It's hard to believe that 'fighting Irish' left their boxer on his own. What a shame and I hope the next Olympics don't find other athletes in this position.

Jamaica's media coverage included two guys and a computer and a few monitors in a trailer outside the stadium! Our Canadian cameras were inside with them filming the Jamaican coverage of the event and it was such a treat to see how excited the Jamaican media guys got watching that race!
